[Bug 252103] [NEW] "New instant message" dialog should strip space at the end of a Jabber address if present

2008-07-26 Thread Rolf Leggewie
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: pidgin

The following happens quite often to me. I go to somebody's launchpad
page, mark the jabber address and middle-mouse-button-insert-click it
into the "New instant message" dialog in pidgin. The thing is that,
usually, this results in a space being added to the Jabber account of
the person I am trying to contact. Instead of just ignoring the extra
space at the end, pidgin does indeed try to contact that non-existant
account. The result is an xmpp error code 404.

[Bug 148408] Re: [M6 LY] System lockup when switching VT's or Resume from Suspend

2008-07-26 Thread Rolf Leggewie
well, as expected, no luck for me. Nothing changed even with the binary
drivers from comment 69. I compiled the last feisty version fully
patched and that already blocked the machine just on starting up X.

I hope I'll find the time to set up a dedicated test installation for
systematically analyzing the situation. I still have an old X20 that I
don't really use for anything anymore. I think the graphics chip is a
bit different, but maybe I can reproduce and disect the problem there.

[Bug 243250] Re: nautilus and evince should not accesses smb mounts at startup

I use an uptodate hardy installation. I can reliably spin up the NAS

say. The start of those programs awakes the drive from sleep, that is
what I can say with certainty.

[Bug 148408] Re: [M6 LY] System lockup when switching VT's or Resume from Suspend

2008-07-31 Thread Rolf Leggewie
Wow, great. This even works for me, too. Which is pretty amazing given
the fact that it looked like my X24 was a pretty hopeless case
previously.

Is it already understood what exactly 105_fdo_att7409_bug5437.diff does
and how that should be carried over to the more recent xorg versions?

Two remarks. The old version messed up my multi-monitor setup pretty
badly so I'll have to get back to the hardy version. Second, the
switching from VT to X and back feels somewhat more sluggish than what I
think I remember (must have been eons ago). But thank God, it is
working again.

Great work, guys!

Thomas, thank you for providing that patch. I think we have a much

This will be needed for verifying the fix.

Thomas, I understand your impatience, but an SRU is an SRU. There is
good reason not to allow introductions of new code after a stable
release. Gourmet is in universe which is pulled from debian unstable.
People who want rock-solid code only need to stay with main. When
people enable universe, they are being informed about the possible
drawbacks IIRC.

package has been prepared the same day 0.14.2 had been released. It
needs to go through my DD sponsor and unfortunately, it seems to be

2008-11-10 Thread Rolf Leggewie
"diff -Naur gourmet-0.14.0/ gourmet-0.14.2/" is 360KB even excluding the
debian and data directory. That is more than "just semantics". We need
to extract the minimal patch that fixes the issue without changing
anything else. I'm not sure when I'll be able to get around to that.
Maybe you can provide some clues to speed things up?

Installing all build dependencies did indeed then result in a successful
compile. I just did not think these packages would be necessary for a
simple "debuild -S" to create the source diff.gz and dsc file.

[Bug 50431] Re: cpu scaling for VIA CPUs does not work

2008-11-11 Thread Rolf Leggewie
> Rolf, if you test Intrepid and still experience issues, please open a
new report.

Hm...

I don't see the value in that.

The OP reported success before I joined this ticket. I am glad to see
the issue was resolved for S2, but it is clear from this bug's history
that this is not always the case for all Via chips. So why the hassle
of closing one and immediately recreating another ticket? That's just a
waste of time.

BTW, I won't test Intrepid on that box, but I'll still create a new
ticket with the current status quo of what I have already documented
here.

[Bug 303316] Re: Please sync gourmet 0.14.2-1 (universe) from Debian unstable (main).

2008-12-01 Thread Rolf Leggewie
Hi, I'm the Debian maintainer for gourmet.

I suggest we don't sync it just yet. There's been a grave bug reported
in the Debian tracker, shortly after 0.14.2 was released. I'm still
trying to figure out what exactly is happening. The program runs fine
for me, but we might see a new release shortly.

As far as the Suggests is concerned, I guess I can probably drop that in
the next release. I did not really see it as a problem and thus left it
in. gourmet used to be based on metakit. It is not really necessary
for current versions, but it can help in upgrading from fairly old
releases that pre-date the first debian release.

[Bug 304683] [NEW] no text input in flash forms when scim is active

2008-12-03 Thread Rolf Leggewie
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: scim

This may be related to bug 211193 (scim can't input chinese word in
flash).

Whenever scim is running (even in "English keyboard" mode), I cannot
enter any text at all in flash forms. Maybe you want to try for
yourself at
http://www.kirupa.com/developer/actionscript/flash_php_email.htm (some
random URL I googled for purpose of illustration).

I believe "gdmflexiserver -n" and virtualbox are also negatively
affected. The keyboard stops to work inside those apps, too, when scim
is running. I will verify this later.

[Bug 37707] Re: language-selector must check that it dosn't affect non-langpacks when it installs packages

2008-12-03 Thread Rolf Leggewie
I agree that language-selector should *never* uninstall packages without
giving a warning and the admin a possibility to opt out at that point.
Language-selector just removed openoffice.org for me because the
localization files for the version I'm running weren't available (see
attached log)! I am running Openoffice.org3 which is from my PPA and
thus not official. language-selector still has no business at all to
just remove it.

[Bug 291353] Re: Upgrading from 0.13.x to 0.14.0 wipes out ingredient database

2008-11-23 Thread Rolf Leggewie
you are probably right that we can get an SRU exception. But only with
a minimal patch. I attach the diff between the 0.14.0 and 0.14.2

will need to get slimmed down to the absolute minimum if we want to have
a chance for an SRU.

[Bug 227547] Re: ubuntu wordpress should suppress the "please update" warning

2008-11-24 Thread Rolf Leggewie
** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: wordpress

I let ubuntu manage my wordpress install and I want to continue doing
that. Thus, I don't think the built-in function from wordpress to
inform about a new upstream release makes any sense and can easily be
counterproductive. Somebody who is not so well-versed with the whole
FOSS-process of upstream->debian->ubuntu might well be irritated that
the software keeps telling about the available upgrade when "sudo
  aptitude" disagrees.
+
+ executive summary (as per SRU wiki page, subheading "Procedure"):
+ 2.1 impact:
+ blog admin users are instructed to update which runs counter to the idea of a
distribution to manage packages
+
+ 2.2 upstream dev branch:
+ this is not applicable upstream, the aim is to disable a feature which has a
purpose but not in the context of a managed distribution
+
+ 2.3 minimal patch
+ see attached debdiffs. I worked together with james_w to iron out a few
minor kinks still present in even the latest versions. To keep the bug-spam
low, I did not attach them here.
+
+ 2.4 TEST CASE:
+ install and configure wordpress in hardy (I think the same thing should
already be observable in Intrepid, too). log in as a blog admin. You are
presented with a message that your installation of wordpress is out of date and
you should update.
+
+ 2.5 regression potential
+
+ low. The patch disables certain portions of a page only visible to wiki
+ admins. I guess the worst case would be that something becomes
+ unbalanced and the page would not validate as HTML (I assume this indeed
+ happened with the patch as it is now applied in Intrepid) for those
+ users on administrative pages. Browsers are usually quite tolerant of
+ incorrect HTML. pages served to regular visitors are completely
+ unchanged.

Actually, this seems to have been unfixed in Intrepid with the latest

Hm, the Intrepid changelog still mentions the patch. Yet, I don't find
it in the unpacked source code. I'll need to take a closer look.
