[Bug 116170] does not connect to Jabber: XML is not well-formed

2007-05-22 Thread Martin Pitt
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: pidgin

I have an ICQ and a jabber account. Both had worked well for years,
Since Ubuntu switched to Pidgin I cannot connect to jabber any more, it
spins on the connection attempt for some seconds, then goes offline
again with the error message 'XML is not well-formed.

This is reflected in this log snippet:

jabber: Sending (ssl): iq type='get' id='purpleb2abc2ab'
to='jabber.org'query xmlns='http://jabber.org/protocol/disco#items'//iq
jabber: Sending (ssl): iq type='get' id='purpleb2abc2ac'
to='jabber.org'query xmlns='http://jabber.org/protocol/disco#info'//iq
jabber: Recv (ssl)(111): stream:errorxml-not-well-formed
xmlns='urn:ietf:params:xml:ns:xmpp-streams'//stream:error/stream:stream
account: Disconnecting account 0x746cd0

I attach the entire log (pidgin -d output) in case it is helpful.

Re: [Bug 75295] Re: Feisty freeze, kernel (?) tries to access DVD drive

2007-05-22 Thread freerick
l7or, thanks for your report, the problem you are describing is
exactly the same as mine: every 5 seconds the messages

May 16 20:05:31 notebook ide: failed opcode was: unknown
May 16 20:05:31 notebook hdc: drive not ready for command

Regardless of which terminal I'm looking at. At the same time,
hald-addon-storage uses 100% CPU, and it takes some time for me to be
able to sudo to kill the process. Afterwards, everything is back to
normal. The hard drive activity light is also on (solid) while, and
sometimes after, hald-addond is at 100%.
I don' t have a Samsung drive; I have an ASUS DVD reader and a SONY
DVD recorder. I don't think they use the same chipset, but if you want
to continue to investigate in that direction, I can check to see which
chipsets they use if it will help you isolate the problem.

[Bug 116150] Re: i get crash message from crash handler on login

2007-05-22 Thread Till Kamppeter
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 115175 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/115175

Due to change of Artifex' license policy to do the head development of
Ghostscript under GPL and the merger of the extra functionality of ESP
Ghostscript (ESP Ghostscript is discontinued now), the packages gs-esp
and gs-afpl got obsolete. They are both replaced by gs-gpl, version 8.60
or newer. I have already done a first test package:

For Gutsy download all packages from

http://www.linux-
foundation.org/~till/tmp/ubuntu/gutsy/ghostscript/binary/

and do

sudo dpkg -i *gs-esp*.deb *gs-afpl*.deb *gs-gpl*.deb

to replace your ESP and AFPL Ghostscript by the new merged GPL
Ghostscript.

If you are running Feisty or older download the files from

http://www.linux-foundation.org/~till/tmp/ubuntu/gutsy/ghostscript/

into the same directory. Then do

sudo apt-get install build-essential
sudo apt-get build-dep gs-esp gs-gpl
dpkg-source -x ghostscript_8.60.dfsg.1-0ubuntu1.dsc
cd ghostscript-8.60.dfsg.1
dpkg-buildpackage -rfakeroot
cd ..
sudo dpkg -i *gs-esp*.deb *gs-afpl*.deb *gs-gpl*.deb *ghostscript*.deb

Answer every question which appears with y, so that all needed
packages get installed.

Or try the distribution-independent binary package from

http://www.openprinting.org/download/printing/esp-gpl-ghostscript-
merge/README

The new grand unified GPL Ghostscript will make it into Ubuntu soon,
after

- Agreeing on the name with Debian: gs-gpl or simply gs
- Adding the C header files to libgs-gpl-dev
- Fixing upstream bug 689237: http://bugs.ghostscript.com/show_bug.cgi?id=689237

Please tell us your results with the test packages.

No, we get hundred of bugs a week and have difficulties to keep with
that, if users who decide to try the new unstable could try to get extra
informations that would make the job easier for the desktop team
(getting a backtrace is not too much job when you do it for the bug you

[Bug 106759] Re: [GPL GS WORKS] Cannot print on Samsung GDI laser printer

2007-05-22 Thread Till Kamppeter

For Gutsy download all packages from

If you are running Feisty or older download the files from

dpkg-buildpackage -rfakeroot
cd ..
sudo dpkg -i *gs-esp*.deb *gs-afpl*.deb *gs-gpl*.deb *libgs*.deb

I can confirm that the python process I referred to earlier in this

and the memory freed as soon as I allowed the tool to close.

[Bug 116177] unability to configure rootbinddn only

2007-05-22 Thread Lorenzo Mancini
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: libpam-ldap

When configuring libpam-ldap using the tui debconf wizard, it is
possible to setup the following binddn combinations:

 * binddn only;
 * binddn + rootbinddn.

However, there is not a way to configure rootbinddn only; our current
setup requires so, forcing the user to handedit the config file
(/etc/pam_ldap.conf).

The same problem is present in the tui debconf wizard of libnss-ldap.

[Bug 88095] Re: [Feisty] uninformative error when resizing ntfs partitions

2007-05-22 Thread gavinmc
I've also experienced this. If windows wasn't shut down properly and
the NTFS journal is incomplete, gparted will (understandably) refuse to
resize it. This therefore affects both the live cd installer and the
alternative installer.

I had to run gparted by hand to find the error buried in a sub-sub-subs-
sub-menu. After that I just needed to boot windows and shut it down
cleanly to get everything to work. But finding the error was not
trivial.

[Bug 116178] ntlmaps process should be started with hihger niceness

2007-05-22 Thread vilbara
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: ntlmaps

Currently ntlmaps runs with niceness of 0. For any reason the process
consumes a lot of CPU when http connection is active over the proxy. So
much CPU that GUI responsiveness degrades dramatically if 3 or more
pages are being loaded simultaneously in Firefox. The solution is to
renice ntlmaps process. http connection performance doesn't degrade and
this fixes computer responsiveness.

I usually add -N 19 to the /etc/init.d/ntlmaps startup script so
startup section looks as following:

  start)
echo -n Starting $DESC:
start-stop-daemon --start -N 19 --quiet --pidfile /var/run/$NAME.pid \
--background --exec $DAEMON -- $DAEMON_OPTS
echo $NAME.

[Bug 116182] Gnome Save As dialog shows 'dev' instead of 'filesystem'

2007-05-22 Thread Box
Public bug reported:

When, for instance, saving a picture in Firefox, I get the 'Save As'
dialog.

Until now, the 'Save As dialogs' showed username, Desktop and Filesystem' as
default places shortcuts on the left.
However, after upgrade to 7.04 (from Edgy) it shows : 'username, Desktop and
'dev'.

'Dev' points to '/dev/.static/dev'.

I cannot find a way to restore it (the 'dev' shortcut) to filesystem,
therefore I assume it's some kind of bug.

[Bug 116181] PDF views but silently fails to print

2007-05-22 Thread John Pye
Public bug reported:

I have a particular PDF file that opens fine in Evince (also KPDF,
Acrobat) but fails silently to print, both with Evince and KPDF. On
Acrobat (all of this on linux) it prints but hte job immediately shows
up as 'stopped' and can't be resumed.

With this PDF I can also not successfully run 'ps2pdf' but I *can*
successfully run pdfnup.

I think that it might be a bug either in Evince or Poppler that some
error state in the PDF is perhaps not being detected, or an error state
from CUPS is not being returned back to the GUI...?

I can't post this PDF on the net (it's an academic paper), but I can
happily send it to anyone who is able to look at this issue -- just send
me your email address. My contact details available via my profile.

Cheers

With GPL Ghostscript 8.60 (both my test packages and installation from

[Bug 48173] Re: Printing on remote Windows shared printer doesn't work

2007-05-22 Thread Till Kamppeter

I have uploaded new test packages (after working out a common concept
with Debian's Ghostscript maintainer):

For Gutsy download all packages from

http://www.linux-
foundation.org/~till/tmp/ubuntu/gutsy/ghostscript/binary/

and do

sudo dpkg -i *gs-esp*.deb *gs-afpl*.deb *gs-gpl*.deb *libgs*.deb
*ghostscript*.deb

to replace your ESP and/or AFPL Ghostscript by the new merged GPL
Ghostscript.

If you are running Feisty or older download the files from

http://www.linux-foundation.org/~till/tmp/ubuntu/gutsy/ghostscript/

into the same directory. Then do

sudo apt-get install build-essential
sudo apt-get build-dep gs-esp gs-gpl
dpkg-source -x ghostscript_8.60.dfsg.1-0ubuntu1.dsc
cd ghostscript-8.60.dfsg.1
dpkg-buildpackage -rfakeroot
cd ..
sudo dpkg -i *gs-esp*.deb *gs-afpl*.deb *gs-gpl*.deb *libgs*.deb
*ghostscript*.deb

Answer every question which appears with y, so that all needed
packages get installed.

Please tell us your results with the test packages.

[Bug 88377] Re: Suspend to disk fails: image_size too small

2007-05-22 Thread Alexander Hunziker
OK, I created a new script in /etc/acpi/suspend.d/95-set-image-size.sh
with the content:

#/bin/bash

echo 1048576 /sys/power/image_size

That works fine. The script gets called by /etc/acpi/prepare.sh which in
turn is executed from within /etc/acpi/hibernate.sh. It's also run when
going into suspend to RAM mode but that doesn't hurt. I think creating a
new file is better than altering an existing one for this way it won't
be overwritten by updates.

Anyway, where is the RAM content being written on the disk? On the swap
partition? Then what if your RAM is full and the swap partition contains
data as well? Or is a file used for hibernation? Questions over
questions...

[Bug 114522] Re: sound (ALC880) does not work in Feisty

2007-05-22 Thread Eric
After some more tests and discussion on alsa-dev ML, I can consider the
solution provided above as a valuable workaround. I think that the bug can be
cancelled from launchpad, because probe_mask=1 allows sound to work. Moreover
it seems that this has nothing to do with the kernel. Only Alsa modifications
may make this behaviour to disappear.
This seems to be related to the fact that the sound card is a mixed card sound
 modem such as described in

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ aplay -l
 Liste des PLAYBACK périphériques
carte 0: Intel [HDA Intel], périphérique 0 : ALC880 Analog [ALC880 Analog]
  Sous-périphériques: 1/1
  Sous-périphérique: #0: subdevice #0
carte 0: Intel [HDA Intel], périphérique 6 : Si3054 Modem [Si3054 Modem]
  Sous-périphériques: 1/1
  Sous-périphérique: #0: subdevice #0

So, as a conclusion, in order to have such a sound card to work it is
necessary to have the following line in /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base :

options snd-hda-intel model=clevo probe_mask=1

the model may vary depending on the laptop, but probe_mask=1 IS
ncecessary.

For more information, see alsa-dev mailing-list archive for Alsa 1.0.13
(and others) does not work on ALC880 topic.

[Bug 116183] GTK's compose map is different to X's

2007-05-22 Thread Sam Vilain
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: libgtk2.0-0

I'm guessing that GTK is the root cause of this. But basically, I can't
type certain compose sequences in Mozilla, OOo or gnome-terminal that
work in xterm or emacs. Or, the resultant sequences will be different.

For instance, in emacs or xterm if I type Multi_key underscore A,
I get a ā as defined in /usr/share/X11/locale/en_US.UTF-8/Compose.
However, if I enter it in any gtk application, I get ª. This is
particularly irritating when entering pīnyīn, which uses characters like
ǚ. I have yet to figure out what gtk expects me to hit to compose a
character with a caron on it, or why it doesn't just let X.org do it for
it.

I've seen this in all Ubuntu releases from Dapper to Feisty, and I
expect that this is the root cause behind Bug #98945 too.

Note I'm using xkb directly to configure my keyboard, not gnome-
keyboard-properties. Every time I start certain gnome-control-panel
applications they will override this keymap and I will have to re-run
xkbcomp to load the keymap I actually want.

[Bug 104199] Re: Compiz cannot interact with top bar when maximized

2007-05-22 Thread Jerry Chong
Confirmed on ATI Radeon Mobility M6 LY. Wobbly windows is disabled,
happens even with metacity disabled (except Firefox, which curiously
works), and 'gnome-windows-decorator' doesn't exist. Beryl works fine,
though.

[Bug 116184] network manager support in gajim does not work

2007-05-22 Thread Stefan Bethge
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gajim

There is an error in /usr/share/gajim/src/network_manager_listener.py which has
been corrected in current svn which prevents gajim from automatically
disconnecting/connecting when network manager sends events through dbus. It has
probably been introduced with 0.11.1, 0.11 worked for me.
AFAICT, the file can easily be replaced, changing line 23 to
connection.change_status('online', '')
I changed it on my machine and it is working fine.

ProblemType: Bug
Architecture: i386
Date: Tue May 22 13:11:25 2007
DistroRelease: Ubuntu 7.04
Package: gajim 0.11.1-0ubuntu3
PackageArchitecture: i386
SourcePackage: gajim
Uname: Linux munin 2.6.20-15-386 #2 Sun Apr 15 07:34:00 UTC 2007 i686 GNU/Linux
