[Bug 246367] Re: checkroot.sh blocks writing /var (fsck)

2008-07-07 Thread Chris Coulson
/var/run is a temporary read-write filesystem and is mounted by
S01mountkernfs.sh very early on in the boot process. fsck can still
write to /var/run even though the root filesystem is read-only, so I
very much doubt that is the issue here. Bare in mind that the default
Ubuntu configuration does not have a separate /var partition, so
everyone would have this problem if this was really the cause of your
issue. The only time that fsck would not be able to write to /var/run
would be if the mounting of /var/run failed for some reason.

Do you not get an error when fsck stops? Have you tried booting in
recovery mode to look for errors?

Thanks

[Bug 244376] Re: Hardy 8.0.4 locks up completly

2008-07-07 Thread peterr_100
Hi changed it now to linx-source-2.6.24

I think the following could be the problem. Always after a hang I can
read the following in the reports.

Clocksource tsc unstable (delta = 314003840071 ns)
Time: acpi_pm clocksource has been installed.

Tried alreday to add clocksource=acpi_pm in /boot/grub/menu.lst but this didn't
seem to help :-(
(Did of course also the update-grub)

The system still froze after a restart and I was very surprised to read
again the warning above in the kernel log file

Any Ideas what I can try next to fix this really annoying problem?

Actual:

[Bug 246381] [NEW] APT daily cronjobs hangs, prevents other cronjobs to be executed

2008-07-07 Thread Yann Hamon
Public bug reported:

Hi,

I've created a cronjob in /etc/cron.daily (a very simple mysqldump) and
have been looking for weeks why it wouldnt execute... Following the
advice of a friend I run:

sudo su -
run-parts --report /etc/cron.daily

Which seemed to hang completely. I straced the process, and it seemed it was
hanging on the APT cron job;
access(/etc/cron.daily/apt, X_OK) = 0
pipe([3, 4])= 0
pipe([5, 6])= 0
clone(child_stack=0, flags=CLONE_CHILD_CLEARTID|CLONE_CHILD_SETTID|SIGCHLD,
child_tidptr=0xb7db86f8) = 13861
close(4)= 0
close(6)= 0
select(6, [3 5], NULL, NULL, NULL

I removed the APT cronjob and now the run-parts works fine... would be
worth testing but I wonder if all the cronjobs following
/etc/cron.daily/apt are executed properly...

Maybe this bug is linked to
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/apt/+bug/86896 ?
I am using Jeos 8.04 built with uvb - tell me if I can provide any additional
information, thanks!

[Bug 246357] Re: booting is slow (~ 8 minutes) in hardy

2008-07-07 Thread Chris Coulson
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. Could you please install the package 'bootchart' from the
repositories. Bootchart is a boot sequence auditing tool, and will
generate a chart showing which processes were running during the boot,
how long they took to execute, and how much CPU and disk I/O they used.

After installing bootchart, a new chart will be saved in
/var/log/bootchart each time you start your machine. Could you please
attach one of these charts to this bug report so we can identify what is
slowing down your boot.

Thanks for working on this, unfortunately I just merged it since this was also
rebuilding with the newest Perl.
The prefix=/usr/local is just an artifact of the package, since during the

configure pass (with prefix set to the default /usr/local).

I did try with smbclient as suggested and I can see the shares with it
if I put in a password. If I don't enter a password it reports:

Error returning browse list: NT_STATUS_ACCESS_DENIED
Anonymous login successful

Then gives me a list of all the machines on the LAN.

Nautilus never asks me for a password when browsing. If I type in a
location, e.g. smb://WindowsBox/SharedDocs, I sometimes get in and
sometimes get a timeout error.

[Bug 246391] [NEW] GUI problem in with system monitor

2008-07-07 Thread Shinjin
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-system-monitor

The gnome system monitor's GUI is acting weird. The entire box is
present but only a portion of it is being used, all of the buttons, etc
are squeezed into that portion. It still works properly otherwise except
any actions such as clicking must be done where the item SHOULD be. I.E.
To close the system monitor you must click on the far right on the bar
instead of halfway through where the button is shown.

I am using Ubuntu 8.04 - the Hardy Heron
Gnome system moniter version = 2.22.1-0ubuntu2

ProblemType: Bug

[Bug 245842] Re: dmraid package destroys initrd and render system unbooteable (ubuntu Hardy)

2008-07-07 Thread EagleDM
Intel Matrix RAID (on ICH9R) created on Windows.

3 HDD-

0 - SATA320GB (3 partitions) Non-RAID =1-windows (16Gb) 2 linux
ext3 (16gb) 3 - ntfs (backup win/linux)

1- SATA320GB (RAID0) - NTFS

2- SATA320GB (RAID0) - NTFS

The linux boot disk is recognized as /dev/sda2 of course and this setup was
already working as this since Feisty Fawn. This problem just appears to be in
Hardy as soon as I do apt-get install dmraid and reboot the machine.

/boot/menu.lst already reflect the disk as being hd0,2 which corresponds
to /dev/sda2 and nothing happens.

I also tried to reasign disk to /dev/mapper/isw_iwjidjqwMAIN1 or
whatever name it was for the RAID thinking DMRAID could take over normal
naming and that should be the problema but no, if I manually mount
/dev/mapper or /dev/sda2 in busybox I am always receiving the message
device is bussy

Also, this is the problem, of course, initram is always reporting device is
busy after installing dmraid and rebooting the system. :(

Chris: Running with the deleted cache results in evolution failing to
completely start, no GUI, but process is active. Running from console
shows the following CalDAV Eplugin starting up ... followed by a

something related to the cache. Could you please try backing up your

Then let me know if your problem persists.

Vik: I'm going to discuss this with other people on IRC later. In the

Would you be good enough to plug the two raids off ( to see which works)

Re: [Bug 191475] Re: [hardy] media tab in file management preferences missing applications

2008-07-07 Thread zcat
I'm not sure how different packages identify themselves as being a media
player; perhaps this bug should be filed against the VLC package for not
registering itself somwhere?

I still want an option at the bottom of the list Run this command so I can
have some completely different program start, such as k9copy..

And I still want the menu to be duplicated under System Preferences
Removable Drives and Media where it used to be. I still strongly believe
that's the most 'intuitive' place people will look for it. And even if it
wasn't, I also think that it's not a good idea for Ubuntu to make such
confusing changes to the interface just when we're starting to get
'non-geeks' learning to use the OS.

2008/7/8 Philippe Piquer [EMAIL PROTECTED]:

I also had to dig deep into Google to find a correct answer (at least one
 that work) for VLC.
So resolving this important for Mr Everybody.

[Bug 246394] [NEW] Please sync cedet 1:1.0pre4-3 (universe) from Debian unstable (main).

2008-07-07 Thread Reinhard Tartler
Public bug reported:

Please sync cedet 1:1.0pre4-3 (universe) from Debian unstable (main).

Explanation of the Ubuntu delta and why it can be dropped:

In private conversation with Michael we concluded that all changes from
ubuntu have been merged into the debian package. The ubuntu changes,
that have been done by Michael as well can therefore safely be dropped.

Changelog since current intrepid version 1:1.0pre4-2ubuntu1:

cedet (1:1.0pre4-3) unstable; urgency=low

  * debian/control:
- Remove dpatch Build-Depends.
- Add VCS-Browser and VCS-Git fields.
- Bump Standards-Version to 3.7.3.
- Bump dependencies so that we force the new semantic package to build
  properly (Closes: #412015).
  * debian/copyright:
- Add copyright notices to silence lintian.
  * debian/eieio.examples:
- Remove linemark.el.
  * debian/*.emacsen-(install|remove):
- Use /usr/share/info rather than /usr/info.
  * debian/*-install.el:
- List explicit paths to add to the load path while compiling, and
prohibit Debian's normal load files from starting. This should
prevent problems like loading a new version of the semantic package
without first loading the packages that it depends on. It should
help to future-proof us against bug reports to this effect. It will
also provide a slight speed boost during compilation, and prohibits
3rd-party packages from messing up our build
  (Closes: #484667, #440893).
  * debian/patches:
- Manage this using git.
  * debian/rules:
- Remove use of dpatch in favor of a simple patch invocations.
- Add genpatches command for the maintainer to call to generate the
  contents of debian/patches.
- Fix lintian warning about binary-arch.
- Don't remove linemark.el from /usr/share/emacs/site-lisp/eieio, at
  request of Étienne BERSAC.
  * debian/semantic.emacsen-install:
- Don't compile semantic-example.el, since emacs-snapshot has issues
  with it.

Having problems installing xsever-xorg.core pkg. Did a Build-Dep
check in the terminal. Came w/a list of unmet dependencies, requested
permission installed dependent files. I did so successfully. I still
get the following error msg:

Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have
requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable
distribution that some required packages have not yet been created
or been moved out of Incoming.

Since you only requested a single operation it is extremely likely that
the package is simply not installable and a bug report against
that package should be filed.
The following information may help to resolve the situation:

The following packages have unmet dependencies:
xserver-xorg-core: Depends: xserver-xorg but it is not going to be installed

Using the Update Mgr, it indicated that some of my Respositories may be out of
date OR that I need to ADD some Respositories.
If so, how do I go about finding out WHICH Respositories am I missing, etc.?

Using same PC that I have Hardy Heron on, which runs fine, no problems.

Using an AMD Sempron 2400 Socket A/462 PC with 1.5GB SDRAM and an ATI
Radeon 9600XT AGP 256MB Video Card

[Bug 246089] Re: cheese crashes after a few seconds of running

2008-07-07 Thread Chris Coulson
Hm, they look like 2 completely different crashes. In the first
crash, cheese terminates with SIGABRT, and in the second one it
terminates with a segmentation fault.

For the second crash, please follow these instructions to have apport
report a new bug about your crash that can be dealt with by the
automatic retracer.

If you are running the Ubuntu Stable Release you might need to enable
apport in /etc/default/apport and restart.

If you are using Ubuntu with the Gnome desktop environment - launch nautilus
and navigate to your /var/crash directory and double click on the crash report
you wish to submit.
If you are using Kubuntu or Xubuntu you can file the crash using
/usr/share/apport/apport-qt --crash-file=/var/crash/_my_crash_report.crash in a
terminal - where _my_crash_report.crash is the crash you would like to report.

In the meantime, it would be worth you trying to obtain a backtrace from
that first crash. Note that apport won't generate a crash report for an
application that terminates with SIGABRT

Thanks

[Bug 224160] Re: ATI Mobility FireGL + hardy: GL Segmentation fault

2008-07-07 Thread Zdenko Rohac
Hi.
This should work if you have same problem as I had: - segfault as normal user
and no error as root:
Run following command in shell:

find /usr/lib -name libGL.so.1 -exec ls -al {} \;

It will show something like:
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 21 2008-05-23 10:10 /usr/lib/libGL.so.1 -
/usr/lib/libGL.so.1.2
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 27 2008-05-02 18:23 /usr/lib/xorg/libGL.so.1 -
/usr/lib/fglrx/libGL.so.1.2
which means: I have found two files with this name under /usr/lib both are
links pointing to
some real file path and filename is behind - . Now list those real files:

ls -al /usr/lib/libGL.so.1.2
ls -al /usr/lib/fglrx/libGL.so.1.2

It will show that modify time of file in /usr/lib/fglrx directory is much older
than that of file in /usr/lib also sizes
differs so /usr/lib is newer (hopefully also better) but running program is
taking this older one first. So we need
to move it out of the way (from directories where programs look for libraries.
/usr/lib is one of default locations,
/usr/lib/fglrx is usually defined in environment see env | grep LD_LIBRARY_PATH
). So you need to move files
/usr/lib/xorg/libGL.so.1 and /usr/lib/fglrx/libGL.so.1.2 somewhere else f.e.
/tmp/ (you can delete them but if something
will go wrong you have problem} so run:

sudo mv /usr/lib/xorg/libGL.so.1 /tmp/
sudo mv /usr/lib/fglrx/libGL.so.1.2 /tmp/

and than it should work.

[Bug 246378] Re: limewire is not openning

2008-07-07 Thread Vladimir Osintsev
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. Unfortunately we can't fix it, because your description
didn't include enough information. You may find it helpful to read How
to report bugs effectively
http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/bugs.html. We'd be grateful
if you would then provide a more complete description of the problem.

We have instructions on debugging some types of problems at
http://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProcedures

At a minimum, we need:
1. the specific steps or actions you took that caused you to encounter the
problem,
2. the behavior you expected, and
3. the behavior you actually encountered (in as much detail as possible).
Thanks!

[Bug 246235] Re: wireless card not recognized after hardy update

Atheros doesn't work without restricted modules (yet).

Does the folder /lib/modules/2.6.24-19-generic/madwifi exist on your
system? What are its contents?

Do you normally run the 2.6.24-19-generic kernel? I noticed from your
attached dmesg log that you chose the recovery mode from the grub
menu...

The first video consistently fails to render the effects correctly,

Re: [Bug 244631] Re: too many open files

2008-07-07 Thread ebnf
I have a pop, an imap and an exchange mailbox. My understanding is
that exchange is stupid and makes the user scan all the files server
side and locally to see if there is mail so maybe it's scanning across
all mail. Other problematic things that I do are to never delete
email from the server or locally and check mail every 1 minute.

Out of interest, what type of mailbox do you use? I use a POP mailbox,

[Bug 246403] [NEW] Compiz effects work on video only after another video already open

2008-07-07 Thread Xepra
Public bug reported:

Hardware/Configuration:
Ubuntu 8.04 AMD64
HP dv2000 laptop
Intel GM965/GL960 Integrated graphics

When playing a video none of the compiz effects display correctly. When
the video is scaled, opacified, distorted, or shadowed over ugly static
black or blue is displayed where the effect should be. When another
video is opened (even another instance of the same video) it displays
all the effects perfectly. In fact is is absolutely gorgeous - the
video is skewed for angles when rotating the cube, and even reflects
correctly (and skewed even), when that feature is turned on. It
opacifies and shadows too!

I can close the first video and the second one continues to display
effects correctly. If I close both and reopen one the bug reappears.

This was cross tested with VLC and the built in Movie Player. By cross-
tested I mean opening two instances of vlc, an instance of vlc then
movie player, and vice versa. Everytime the first video does render
effects correctly whereas the second does. Subsequent videos also
display effects correctly.

Man I am impressed though - I have a ton of plugins running, and they all work
seamlessly and quickly on the crappy built in video card. The
reflection/scaling/skewing/opacifying of the video is especially impressive.
Good work guys!

[Bug 182716] Re: bcm4306, bcm4309, bcm4311, bcm4312 with b43 : Authentication with AP doesn't work.

2008-07-07 Thread Nattgew
You start out by saying that b43 does work, and end by saying that it needs to
be fixed?
Thanks for the info, though. I guess it will be nice if the switch actually
works, because my Dell computer does have a switch for the wi-fi.
I have b43 and ssb blacklisted, so the dmesg command gives me nothing. Maybe
it's because I don't have a fresh boot?
I'm using Ndiswrapper right now and it's working great. I'd rather have b43
working, of course. I do have some computers (not Dell, no switches) that will
only work with bcm43xx, as Ndiswrapper seemed to freeze them up.
