Fwd: Is disabling ctrl-alt-backspace really such a good idea?

Subject: Is disabling ctrl-alt-backspace really such a good idea?
To: ubuntu-de...@lists.ubuntu.com

Hello everyone,

In Jaunty alpha 3 you can´t use CTRL-ALT-BACKSPACE to restart the X-server
anymore. I know that some users complained about restarting the X-server,
but I see a lot more, including yours truly, complaining about the fact that
the shortcut got disabled. I think it's a good idea to create a GUI to set
X-server options, but I assume that most people don´t want to have to
restart their pc when the GUI chrashes. It´s not windows, after all. What I
propose is that people who want to get rid of the shortcut can do so easily
via a simple GUI menu, but that it´s enabled by default.

Yours sincerely,

Liam Zwitser

This isn't a bug but a feature request. You should make requests such as
these on Ubuntu brainstorm, not here.

Great idea, by the way. I hope it gets included in Jaunty :)

[Bug 199497] Re: [needs-packaging] python-ogre

2008-11-13 Thread Liam Zwitser
I would like to see this package as well. I want to create some 3d
environments, but I am not ready to learn C++ just yet
and this is the only free 3d graphics engine that has a python wrapper.

I can confirm the problem with the hardy package, it indeed doesn't
install because of the problem mentioned by the poster above me. So
please, make a package! ;)

2008-10-24 Thread Liam Zwitser
What the hell?? Joysticks won't work with intrepid ibex?? NOT CRITICAL,
WTF WTF WTF

Will it at least work with 32-bit intrepid out of the box, just like in
hardy, gutsy and feisty (where I started using ubuntu)??

Please do something about this before final release. I am going to post
the fact joysticks, dance pads etc wont work with 8.10 on every site /
forum I know. It will help get the files faster, and it will help making
people wait with upgrading until joysticks work.

[Bug 259727] [NEW] gnome-keyboard-properties doesn't work correctly

2008-08-20 Thread Liam Zwitser
Public bug reported:

I have been trying to get the usa international with dead keys keyboard
layout to work, do I can create an accented e with ' + e, for example,
and an umlaut with shift + ' + u . Selecting this layout in keyboard
preferences however only worked untill I restarted the x-server / my
computer, and for some reason, doesn't work at all anymore now. this is
my current xorg.conf keyboard section:

Section InputDevice
Identifier Generic Keyboard
Driver kbd
Option CoreKeyboard
Option XkbRules xorg
Option XkbModel pc105
Option XkbLayout us
Option XkbVariant intl
EndSection

Now how can I set it so that dead keys work as described above, and why
doesn't gnome-keyboard-properties work? I think it has somehthing to do
with permissions, becasue the program doesn't ask for your pasword, and
/etc/X11/xorg.conf requires root permissions to save any changes in it.
Also, when I log in as root, by typing startx from a root terminal,
and I select the keyboard layout (graphically), the program works fine.
(until I restart the xserver / reboot the computer, then the dead keys
don't work anymore, just like before)

[Bug 259814] [NEW] All text files (didn't test others) in root filesystem can be copied to a folder owned by the user, and then edited there, without needing sudo

2008-08-20 Thread Liam Zwitser
*** This bug is a security vulnerability ***

Public security bug reported:

I am running ubuntu hardy with all the latest updates.

In a terminal, I typed the commands:

cd /etc/pulse

cp daemon.conf ~/Desktop

No sudo

This resulted in the pulseaudio config file standing on my desktop, it's
owner changed from root to me! I am not sure if this is a bug or not,
but it doesn't look very good to me. Same goes for /etc/X11/xorg.conf
(offcourse the original, can't be changed or deleted without sudo, but
still, this doesn't feel good to me)

[Bug 243770] [NEW] restricted drivers manager do esn´t work in intrepid alpha 1

2008-06-28 Thread Liam Zwitser
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: jockey-gtk

- Release

8.10 intrepid ibex alpha 1

- Package version

latest, namely 0.3.3-0ubuntu9

- expected

Upon first boot, I expected a popup ¨restricted drivers are available¨,
to appear in the taskbar. I would then proceed to click on this
notification and type in my password. In the window that would then
appear I would place a mark in the box of the nvidia 3d driver, which
ubuntu would download and install.

- what happened instead

Nothing! I didn´t see a popup or anything, and when I started the
restricted drivers manager myself from the menu, it didn´t show anything
(it didn´t detect that my nvidia card needed a driver. In fact, it
didn´t detect it was there in the first place :(

Starting it from command line gives this output:

jockey-gtk

[Bug 243787] [NEW] all sounds are played by pc s peaker in intrepid alpha 1, doesn´t sound good : ( (by default, it can be easily solved)

2008-06-28 Thread Liam Zwitser
Public bug reported:

- Release

Ubuntu 8.10 intrepid alpha 1

- Description

All sounds, from the login sound to playing a mp 3 in rhytmbox, are being
played by the pc speaker instead of my normal 5.1 surround sound speakers.
This, although funny, sounds very bad. It was easy to solve, I just had to go
to System - preferences - sound and selecting Alsa for all the options
mentioned there. I figure solving this bug is simply a question of having the
right sound system selected by default, instead of ¨pcsp¨

By the way, my sound card is a soundblaster audigy. hardware id: CA0106
