[Bug 1445041] [NEW] Can HAVE_LDAP_INITIALIZE be defined by default?

2015-04-16 Thread Deric Sullivan
Public bug reported:

Hello, I'm not sure if this is a bug or a wishlist item.

I'm having issues upon bootup with a service daemon freezing (ntpd in
this case). I think the problem would go away (not necessarily fixed
but no longer seen at least) if libnss-ldap was built with
HAVE_LDAP_INITIALIZE defined (in config.h.in). Since OpenLDAP libraries
are a depneds for libnss-ldap, and since OpenLDAP has
ldap_initialize() (and ldap_init() while we're at it), then why not
activate these features by default?

I can provide lots of information about my particular problem symptoms with
ntpd if needed.

# lsb_release -rd
Description:Ubuntu 14.04.2 LTS
Release:14.04
#
# apt-cache policy libnss-ldap

 264-2.2ubuntu4 0

What I expected to happen:
No connection be made to an LDAP server due to a call to initgroups() by a
process whose uid/username is listed in nss_initgroups_ignoreusers in the
/etc/ldap.conf file.

What happened instead:
It seems that a connection is made anyways.

Thank you,
Deric Sullivan

[Bug 823366] Re: bond_primary is ignored in /etc/network/interfaces

2011-11-10 Thread Deric Sullivan
Actually, the original post without the auto bond0 is from mar_rio.
I'm the second person reporting the bug. I assumed that you didn't put
auto bond0 because we've been quoting the README as authoritative and
it doesn't have the auto for the bond. To reproduce the original bug I
simplified my interfaces file to (only IPs have been changed):

--
auto lo
iface lo inet loopback

auto bond0
iface bond0 inet static
   bond_slaves eth0 eth1
   bond_mode active-backup
   bond_primary eth1
   bond_miimon 100
   bond_updelay 2000
   address 192.168.1.100
   netmask 255.255.255.0
   broadcast 192.168.1.255
--

So, if I keep auto bond0 and change my interfaces file to:
--
auto lo
iface lo inet loopback

auto bond0
iface bond0 inet static
   bond_slaves none
   bond_mode active-backup
   bond_primary eth0
   bond_miimon 100
   bond_updelay 2000
   address 192.168.1.100
   netmask 255.255.255.0
   broadcast 192.168.1.255

auto eth0
iface eth0 inet manual
   bond_master bond0
   bond_mode active-backup
   bond_primary eth0
   bond_miimon 100
   bond_updelay 2000

auto eth1
iface eth1 inet manual
   bond_master bond0
   bond_mode active-backup
   bond_primary eth0
   bond_miimon 100
   bond_updelay 2000
--

Then I still have no primary after a reboot. What I think is happening
is the following:

If the order that the interfaces come up is bond0, eth0, eth1 then the primary
will be set:
ifup bond0:
creates bond0 (from add_master());
no primary is set (from setup_master() with no slaves);
no slaves are added (from enslave_slaves() with bond_slaves =
none);
bond0 comes UP (but probably not LOWER_UP yet)
ifup eth0:
sees that bond0 is already created (from add_master());
should fail to set mode but continue anyway (from
setup_master() with bond0 already up);
no primary is set (from setup_master() with no slaves);
eth0 is added as slave (from enslave_slaves() with bond_slaves
= eth0);
eth0 comes UP and LOWER_UP which should cause bond0 to come
LOWER_UP;
ifup eth1:
sees that bond0 is already created (from add_master());
should fail to set mode but continue anyway (from
setup_master() with bond0 already up);
primary is set to eth0 (from setup_master() with eth0 as slave);
eth1 is added as slave (from enslave_slaves() with bond_slaves
= eth1);
eth1 comes UP and LOWER_UP;

If the order that the interfaces come up is bond0, eth1, eth0 then the primary
will not be set:
ifup bond0:
creates bond0 (from add_master());
no primary is set (from setup_master() with no slaves);
no slaves are added (from enslave_slaves() with bond_slaves =
none);
bond0 comes UP (but probably not LOWER_UP yet)
ifup eth1:
sees that bond0 is already created (from add_master());
should fail to set mode but continue anyway (from
setup_master() with bond0 already up);
no primary is set (from setup_master() with no slaves);
eth1 is added as slave (from enslave_slaves() with bond_slaves
= eth1);
eth1 comes UP and LOWER_UP which should cause bond0 to come
LOWER_UP;
ifup eth0:
sees that bond0 is already created (from add_master());
should fail to set mode but continue anyway (from
setup_master() with bond0 already up);
no primary is set (from setup_master() with only eth1 as slave);
eth0 is added as slave (from enslave_slaves() with bond_slaves
= eth0);
eth0 comes UP and LOWER_UP;

I would guess that moving the following code from setup_master() over to the
end of enslave_slaves() will fix the problem:

# The first slave in bond-primary found in current slaves becomes the
primary.
# If no slave in bond-primary is found, then primary does not change.
for slave in $IF_BOND_PRIMARY ; do
if grep -sq \\$slave\\
/sys/class/net/$BOND_MASTER/bonding/slaves ; then
sysfs $slave primary
break
fi
done

Note: If that does fix the problem then moving the
IF_BOND_ACTIVE_SLAVE section is probably also a good idea but not
related specifically to this bond_primary bug report.

Title:
  bond_primary is ignored in /etc/network/interfaces

To manage

[Bug 823366] Re: bond_primary is ignored in /etc/network/interfaces

2011-11-07 Thread Deric Sullivan
Regarding comment #9:
Maybe there is some type of race condition that could cause the bug but I have
many servers that had never shown this bug. And regardless of any possible
race condition, the SRU guarantees that the bug will appear.

Regarding comment #8 and #9:
I tried the config as suggested by Steve and unfortunately it makes things
worse.
bond0 doesn't even come up. Since bond0 no longer has an auto bond0 stanza,
I see nothing in if-pre-up.d/ifenslave which would bring up bond0.
Also, the README mentions:
The master interface will be created and set up at the time the first slave
is set up, according to bond_* options in the *slave* stanza. For this
reason, in order to get consistent results, the values of all the bond_*
options should be identical in the master stanza and in all the possible
slave stanzas.
but your example does not do this (I don't think this has anything to do with
the problem but I mention it just in case).

[Bug 482419] Re: 802.3ad interface bonding fails if started too early

2011-11-03 Thread Deric Sullivan
The patch for this bug breaks the use of bond_primary in
/etc/network/interfaces.  See Bug #823366.

The following piece of code from the setup_master() function in
/etc/network/if-pre-up.d/ifenslave will only setup a primary if the
primary is listed as a slave (which will not be the case with the patch
that reorders the enslave_slaves and setup_master functions.

---
# The first slave in bond-primary found in current slaves becomes the
primary.
# If no slave in bond-primary is found, then primary does not change.
for slave in $IF_BOND_PRIMARY ; do
if grep -sq \\$slave\\
/sys/class/net/$BOND_MASTER/bonding/slaves ; then
sysfs $slave primary

[Bug 719448] Re: The once parameter does not work with -boot

2011-05-13 Thread Deric Sullivan
Martin, thanks for the clarification on how/when the fixed package moves from
-proposed to -updates.
But is there anything else needed? I waited 10 days to be safe, and still the
package is not in -updates. It's also still listed on the Pending Ubuntu
stable release updates web page.

Thanks,
Deric

Re: [Bug 719448] Re: The once parameter does not work with -boot

2011-05-06 Thread Deric Sullivan
Hi,

I'm trying to figure out if there is anything else that I'm supposed to
do to get this fix into lucid-updates.

When I look at the web page for Pending Ubuntu stable release updates
(at http://people.canonical.com/~ubuntu-archive/pending-sru.html;) I
see, in the lucid section, that qemu-kvm is listed. But the bug #719448
is highlighted in purple which means bugs in purple are verified for a
task but need verification for another task. What is the other
verification that is needed? Is that something that I'm supposed to do?

Thanks,
Deric

 The Gnome developers are also upset at Canonical. No idea why.

 It's because Canonical only ate their ice cream cone and wouldn't eat
 their ice cream. I remember when Gnome developers* built a rocket and
 visited the moon, brought back a whole ton of cheese.

 I tell you one thing that'll stop people using Unity... if it doesn't
 actually work. Hardware issues are a lot more pressing that design
 issues, especially now that the design is much more demanding on the
 hardware.

 Maybe, although there's a lot of press going on about this. People have
 been critical about Ubuntu doing things they didn't like before, though, and
 eventually they just eat it.

 Significantly this time, I've found several issues that make me worry that
 Ubuntu might get away with squashing Gnome-shell:

  - I've played with both back and forth now for a while, and Gnome-Shell is
 clearly better; people on-line are telling me the same thing. Still, both
 are leaving me confused as to where a lot of settings went (mostly, the
 appearance-related theming stuff; is everything now going to be dark colors
 and blues like some cheap sci-fi flick?), and both have a learning curve.
  Unity seems to have no distinction between running applications and
 applications you can run, which ... honestly just makes me want to find the
 smart phone company that the Ubuntu Developers are working for now and burn
 it down with them in it. Abstracting away the concept of whether an
 application is already running or not is horrible.

  - Installing Gnome3 from the PPA really does completely hose the system;
 after that, Unity and Gnome-classic break, only Gnome-shell works, and
 Gnome-shell doesn't work with my ATi card (it skews the contents of windows
 diagonally, ad uselessness). Imagine that, I ignored the warnings and
 something bad happened.

 Like I said, Ubuntu is Microsofting gnome-shell. They're using their
 market clout to squash a product that's better than theirs. I'm waiting to
 see Canonical try to absorb the GNOME team.

  Also I don't like that I can't write anything in python that looks like
 Unity, I have to write it all in C and talk directly to OpenGL, which is
 messy. If I tried to use Gnome3 then I'd end up having to write in
 javascript, which I hate for no apparent reason.

 Oh woe! Won't someone let me write cool stuff in python?

 Yours with hugs and kisses, Martin Owens

 I am using amd64 so I'll try out the fix.
 Using once did not work for me even if there wasn't a valid OS on

 I'm OK with an importance of low, I was using the workaround of
simply stopping the qemu-kvm after the first boot of -boot order=n and
starting it again with -boot order=c. I'll check out your workaround

[Bug 719448] [NEW] The once parameter does not work with -boot

2011-02-15 Thread Deric Sullivan
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: qemu-kvm

Package: qemu-kvm

The once parameter does not seem to work with the -boot option.

To reproduce:
create an image file to be used as a hard disk:
qemu-img create test-img 1G

Starting a VM guest using once + order ignores the once:

[Bug 623794] Re: evolution address book has quit unexpectedly

2010-08-28 Thread Deric Venra
Hi Pedro

I have run an update and upgrade this morning and tried again. The
evolution address book no longer segfaults and works as it should. I
will test over the next couple of days. If needed i can downgrade the
evolution to get the backtrace but as it is fixed now with the new
version being 2.30.2-1ubuntu2 I am unsure how to proceed.

Please advise.

Regards
Thank you for your help with this.

[Bug 623794] Re: evolution address book has quit unexpectedly

2010-08-25 Thread Deric Venra
I Am not sure if this is what your looking for, I have tried to run gdb
for evolution but don't see any information for the address book
segfaulting. There is no executable evolution-data-server but the log
attached is for the /usr/lib/evolution/e-addressbook-factory

If there is anything else i can try to give more information. This seems
to have been a problem for a while, i thought the newer version of
evolution would maybe fix it.

[Bug 358255] Re: [jaunty] Root on nvidia raid 1 mirror does not boot

I'm also experiencing the same type of problem. I have found a work-
around, although I'm unsure of any implications.

DEBUG: freeing device ddf1_OS5, path /dev/mapper/ddf1_OS

Here's the work-around I'm using:

Modified /usr/share/initramfs-tools/scripts/local-top/dmraid to read:

#!/bin/sh

# local-top script for dmraid.

PREREQS=
prereqs()
{
echo $PREREQS
}

case $1 in
# get pre-requisites
prereqs)
prereqs
exit 0
;;
esac

# Activate any dmraid arrays that were not identified by udev and vol_id.
#for dev in $(dmraid -r -c); do
#   dmraid-activate $dev
#done

# Adding this seems to work.
sleep 2
dmraid -ay

then ran `update-initramfs -u` and after a reboot it booted right up and no
longer went to busybox.

[Bug 279011] Re: [g45] virtual consoles not shown, Intel G45

2009-05-07 Thread J Mark Deric
I am new to launchpad; please forgive me if I'm not following the right
protocol, but I think this is the best way for me to get some help. The
nasty bit: I'm using the CentOS 5.3 distro. The good bit: you have
found and fixed the exact bug I'm having w/Intel DG45ID mobo w/G45 and
Samsung SyncMaster226BW. Virtual consoles don't work, ctrl-alt-F?, but
then F and it comes back. Get an initial 80x40 login then startx
screen at boot; when I log out of X, get the dark screen Not optimum
mode... but blind startx works.

Does anyone know the CentOS/RHEL 5.3 package corresponding to xserver-
xorg-video-intel? Or how I might take the info from here back to the
CentOS folks?

Thanks.

[Bug 159333] Re: GRUB crash at startup ERROR 15

2008-11-22 Thread deric
I had the same problem on Intrepid 8.10. There are 3 hard drives on my
computer and after normal installation I got error 2. So I erased MBR a
reinstalled Kubuntu, then I got error 15. Fixing grub from boot CD
didn't helped at all. As a desperate option I tried installation from
live desktop and now everything works fine. Thanks guys

[Bug 57789] Re: Crossfading option causes skipping

2008-10-28 Thread deric
I can also confirm that. With allowed crossfading sometimes amarok
starts playing first few seconds and then skips to another. When I press
previous track button, amarok plays whole track, which skipped before

Kubuntu 8.04
Amarok 1.4.9.1
KDE 3.5.10
