Re: Audacity crashes Jack

2008-03-05 Thread Javier Tucat Moreno

Hi! You were right!! I didn't notice the plugins from Ardour, and
couldn't do many things. I read the Tutorial and it is incredibly
great! I don't think i will use Audacity with jack for a long time...
for my simple use of home recording (rehersals, classes, little demos)
Ardour is just perfect :-)

Thanks you all!

Javier

Re: Audacity crashes Jack

2008-03-03 Thread Jason Schaefer
Do you really need to run audacity with jack? You should write to the
audacity mailing list about this. Jack and audacity don't work so well
right now (portaudio). Maybe you want to look into another sound
editor that has better jack support. http://jackaudio.org/applications

Again, you might think of upgrading portaudio to the latest dev
snapshot. That is what I had to do for mixxx (another portaudio/jack
app) to work. I can give more details if you want to try it.

You can find the .wav files in an ardour project under the sounds
folder. You can break the project if you mess these up. BTW, Ardour
has the best jack support, the most features, and is the most stable
sound editor for gnu/linux right now. Is it too complex for your
needs? If you stick with the basics, its actually really straight
forward. Be sure to read the manual
http://ardour.org/files/manual/index.html

I made another experiment: I run Jackctrl and then audacity from a
Terminal. Here ist the output (Jack crashed)

$audacity

Re: Audacity crashes Jack

2008-02-27 Thread Javier Tucat Moreno
Hi all!

Audacity works alone, but only when jack is not running. When it does,
Jack crashes.

I set Jack and Audacity at 44100 in sample rate, but Jack crashes
already when Audacity starts. When i go to the preferences it says it
uses the ALSA:default (using Portaudio v19). I tried to change it to
Jack (alsa_pcm) but when i hit OK crashes Audacity!

BTW always when i open Audacity i hear a "PLOP!" on my boxes...

$ audacity
JACK tmpdir identified as [/dev/shm]

Das it help?

Is there an alternative to Audacity in this case?

Thanks!

Audacity must be set to the same samplerate as jack.
Don't attempt to make samplerate changes once you imorted a file.
Audacity only shows its jack-playback-ports when playing back, same
with recording. So your only chance to connect it is when it's already
playing back/recording.

Over all audacity is not a pleasant experience, and it isn't going to
get better with hardy since pulseaudio and portaudio don't work
together, which means that you have to shut pulseaudio down to work
with audacity and alsa.

Audacity and jack works fine together on my system when sample rate is set
same. If there is sample rate discrepancy, audacity gives error when it
tries to open the sound device.

Does it work at all in Ubuntu studio before it crashes? Can you give
more detail?

I don't use audacity anymore but a few days ago I installed audacity
on uStudio and noticed that it does support jack now. It looks like it
uses portaudio for jack. Can others use jack and audacity on ubuntu?

project sample rate." Its set to 44.1 both in audacity and jack. Not
sure whats going on of course you can just run audacity using alsa
but its annoying if you want to use multiple sound apps at the same
time. Javier, you can edit tracks that have been exported from ardour
(wav).
