Re: Natty: inconsistent way to access System configuration topics between Unity 2D and Unity 3D

2011-04-15 Thread Hendrik Knackstedt
Hey.

Ok, but the way to access control center is the same in Unity 3D and in
Unity 2D as far as I can see. Only in Gnome it's different. But since Gnome
is not the fallback in 11.10 anymore you can just go ahead and translate the
string, so it fits for Unity I guess. Most people should see Unity anyway.

An alternative would be to change the original string to contain a directive
for Gnome and one for Unity.

What's left to translate for Ubuntu 11.04?

2011-04-15 Thread Simos Xenitellis
Hi All,

I'ld like to figure out what's left to translate for Ubuntu 11.04.

1. If I visit https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Translations/TemplatesPriority
it looks like it is missing the 'unity' package. Is that page updated
to the latest packages in 11.04?

2. What would be great is to have a page like
https://translations.edge.launchpad.net/ubuntu/maverick/+lang/el
that would filter to the essential packages for Ubuntu 11.04.

There is such a page, packages are sorted according to their importance:

Thanks!

I missed the text Templates which are more important to translate are
listed first.

That page is not supposed to provide a detailed list of packages to
translate, as updating it every cycle would suppose quite a bit of
effort.

Instead, it's supposed to provide guidance on the priority criteria by
which templates are ordered on
https://translations.launchpad.net/ubuntu/natty/+lang/el/

Exactly, the general page should give you an indication already, as it's
sorted by priority. As a complement to that, I've worked a bit more on
the distro statistics page to give you the list of packages you should
contentrate in to achieve supported language status.

I haven't widely announced, as I'm waiting for a change to provide more
up-to-date stats (daily), but you can already use it: just click on the
language name to see the most important packages that need translation.

http://people.canonical.com/~dpm/stats/ubuntu-11.04-translation-stats.html

The code is at [1], and any improvements will be more than welcome.

Enjoy! :-)

Regards,
David.

Kubuntu Natty Translations

2011-04-15 Thread Jonathan Riddell

I've updated our translations page with the strings Kubuntu needs translated
for 11.04.

Deadline for 11.04 release is April 20th, sorry for the short time. Later
translations go in language-pack updates.

Translation testing

2011-04-15 Thread Hendrik Knackstedt
Hi David!

Just a short question concerning translation testing that came up during Bug
day yesterday.

Is there a way to see the current state of translations in Natty (on a
running system, not in Launchpad)? Because it's really difficult to see if
problems are already solved or just exist because some translation wasn't
exported from Launchpad yet.

For Lucid and Maverick we do have the PPA, which is updated semi-weekly, so
that gives you a preview of fixed bugs. But there isn't anything like that
for Natty that I know of.

Other packages also release updates for Natty very often so you can see,
which bugs have been fixed and which bugs need to be fixed when testing
Natty.

So maybe before a new release we could set up a PPA that provides updated
translations (language-pack) as often as possible (maybe every other day or
every day?) that we can see what still has to be done and don't have to
waste time searching Launchpad Bugs or Translations.

gutenprint template importance

2011-04-15 Thread Adi Roiban
I see that gutenprint template is a high priority template, even listed
before pulseaudiot, vino, transmission or mousetweaks.

https://translations.edge.launchpad.net/ubuntu/natty/+source/gutenprint/+pots/gutenprint

I don't know exactly where gutenprint is used in Ubuntu and how can
translators check those translations.

Are there any tips about where to look for gutenprint messages in the
UI?

Many thanks!

Open the Printing preferences window, open the settings of a configured
printer, and choose the Printer settings tab. The content of that page
comes from gutenprint.

However, there is a small problem here. Gutenprint uses po files, not
mo files (btw, cups too). The po files are shipped in the
gutenprint-locales package, and our mo files in the langpacks make no
difference wrt the translation status. So unless we can ship po files in
langpacks, and currently we can't, there is no point in exposing this
template to Ubuntu translators. See:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gutenprint/+bug/415452

The only thing that makes sense is translating the template, and sending
back the po file to upstream, which is here:
http://translationproject.org/domain/gutenprint.html

Re: LibreOffice desktop entries up for translation

The LibreOffice desktop entries (shown in the Unity launcher and in the
classic desktop), along with their Unity quicklists (shown when
right-clicking on the launcher icon) are up for translation in the wiki:

Any particular reason that the actual application names are not merged
(according to wiki pages)? Since the name is what actually is shown in
eg. Unity, it'd be nice to have the localized versions in use for
those languages that have had those before as well.
