We also need to [always], whether we know the answer or not ask one
question when dealing with "big companies".
"Does in work with Linux"?
If answer = "I don't know" ... tell them why you are now walking out of
their store.
If answer = "yes"... tell them why you love them!
This applies to add-in cards, replacements to failed hardware, a new
pc, laptop, tablet, anything...

They do but you would still get hit by customs charges if you import one
and they are the same Clevo laptops that PC Specialist sell which you can
buy without an OS and use the System76 drivers on.

I'm looking to purchase a laptop shortly and would much prefer to buy
a machine with Linux pre-installed but of course choice is limited. I
was wondering what budget machines are available and recommended. Yes
I know Dell will sell me one for a sqillion pounds but I'm looking to
spend about £500.

Thanks

Don't System 76 ship to the UK now?

Don't you have to register / activate windows, by not doing so this
sends out part of a message.

I was chatting to one of the sales people in Pc world torquay ages
ago, he knows about Linux and was more of a mac guy, so we do have
allies, I don't think he likes MS / Windows either.

end of the day it is a SALE and if that sale comes only after having
Windows REMOVED and price reduced accordingly then its a sale on their
books.

What we need to know before that is that the hardware works with Linux
so having a live cd to hand ti test, id any internal components and
then cross reference those to databases of Linux friendly hardware.

I am also sure independent shops would help, for the reason above,
