That is what I would expect to happen. But something is not quite happening like this. I have added a line "touch bash_profile_ran" to the file. It is called when I "su - " but not when I log into gnome. -- ubuntu-uk@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-uk https://wiki.kubuntu.org/UKTeam/

[ubuntu-uk] Setting PATH and other env variables
Hi What is the correct place to define PATH. I have usally defined it in .bash_profile but this doesnt appear to get called when you start a gnome session. I want to be able to set the PATH when I start a gnome terminal session. BASHRC doesnt seem the right place because you can sometimes end up with things being added to the PATH twice. -- Andrew Black London -- ubuntu-uk@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-uk https://wiki.kubuntu.org/UKTeam/

I am not the original poster, but I could chip in to say what I would like in a similar vein. This applies to any type of file, including images. - adding notes associted with the files (without changing the files them selves) - adding tags - sorting /selecting by tags - processing tags either for a single directory or for a tree of directoreis. - being able to access this metadata programmatically in a language of your choice I am not a Mac type so I don't understand what "iPhoto for documents" is sugggesting. -- ubuntu-uk@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-uk https://wiki.kubuntu.org/UKTeam/

[ubuntu-uk] USB DVD writer
I am thinking of buy a USB DVD writer. Are there any gotchas in Linux support. Can you boot from one? I would want to use it with Dapper and Edgy. -- Andrew Black London -- ubuntu-uk@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-uk https://wiki.kubuntu.org/UKTeam/
Re: [ubuntu-uk] A GUI Grub editor?
I am quite technical and in general prefer hacking text files rather than GUI editors. But I find Grub scary. Partly that I know that if I get it wrong I have a nasty unbooting machine (does grup mean Get wRong and machins is UnBootable). If find the file created by debian/ ubuntu really hard to understand. I am not sure whether the issue is - the file is complicated per se - the version created by the installer is too general/ complex I am not sure what the answer is but - from my techy perspective I would like to take the file apart and understand/ simplify it (on a machine that doesnt matter too much if I loose it for a day!) - from a more general perspective some form of GUI would be a good idea. A parallel - the oreilly book on apache security suggests that you throw away the all singing / dancing config generated by whatever distribution you have and construct one you understand. -- Andrew Black London -- ubuntu-uk@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-uk https://wiki.kubuntu.org/UKTeam/
[ubuntu-uk] Sound hardware suggestions
I wonder if anyone could suggest a sound "card" for use with a Edgy machine. Do they exist as USB connected - give me the flexibility to use on different machiens without taking apart. My interersts are - sampling audio input (Analogue -> digital ) at high quality - playing sound (quality less inportant this way) - midi connection to keyboard -- Andrew Black London -- ubuntu-uk@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-uk https://wiki.kubuntu.org/UKTeam/
