True, but no-one uses Skype to call landlines (well on-one I know
anyway), it's all these Windows types I know out there who use it for
free web cam chats, that mean I have to run it...

I've had a voip hard phone for years, but no-one else I know has one
(including the techs), as most of them have mobiles which have hundreds
of free cross-network minutes included. So why mess about with
voip/Skype/etc...

To be honest, even if it were using an open protocol such as VOIP-SIP,
Skype would be unlikely to get much of the Linux market. For calling
landlines, Skype is very expensive compared to VOIP-SIP providers such
as www.sipgate.co.uk or www.webcalldirect.com (which has 300 minutes a
week of inclusive landline calls, to most of the Western world,
providing you deposit at least 6 quid every 3 months).

I wrote a HowTo on setting up a Linux-powered VOIP-SIP router, the
Linksys SPA3102 (40 quid), so you can make free/cheap calls from your
existing BT landline using normal BT extensions and handsets, whilst
still receiving incoming calls on your existing BT number.

[ubuntu-uk] Skype 2.0 beta

2008-02-09 Thread Mark Fraser
I've just done a package update and found I had 2 updates for Skype. When I
loaded it I noticed it was version 2.0 (beta), which means webcam support :)
Tried it with my Logitech webcam and it detects it, just need to do a live
test now.
