Re: [Ubuntu Oregon] Ubuntu Hour... well maybe.
I agree with Cody, it's risky and smoky out there. However I just thought I'd mention that I'll be at BWC this evening for some much needed R&R and a spot of tea. Therefore it's not an official Ubuntu meeting of sorts, I'm just there... hanging out catching up on the general goings on in our area. No biggie if no one shows up, as masks are required while inside BWC and social disting is as well. Ciao for now, Phil. [Ubuntu Oregon] Ubuntu Hour... well maybe.
We have not held an Ubuntu Hour since the COVID virus in March. Now that things are starting to open up once again and with Broadway Coffee now open until 7:00 pm. I thought I'd mention to our LoCo Linux techies that I'll be down at Broadway Coffee this Friday late afternoon time until closing at 7:00 pm that evening. So if anyone would like to join me for an *unofficial* Linux/Ubuntu meeting while enjoying some much missed tech-talk along with a cup of tea or coffee, you know where I'll unofficially be this coming Friday evening. [Ubuntu Oregon] Salem Ubuntu Hour
Hi all, just a friendly reminder. There is NO Salem Ubuntu Hour this evening. Do to lower participation during the holidays along with the holiday hustle, we have decided that it would be best not to have our regular Friday meeting this month. Considering the storm that's coming our way, I think we decided wisely. Thank you all for your contributions over the years, towards building an awesome Ubuntu community along with creating "Ubuntu," the best Linux distribution ever made. Hope you all have a merry Christmas, and a happy new year. Best wishes, Phillip. N. I made it down to Broadway for this evening's Ubuntu meeting in Salem, brought cookies the edible kind.. Currently no one else has arrived, however it's a nibble early. So I'll hang out here at Broadway Coffee for a bit in case someone shows up, stop on by to talk about our favorite OS, and nibble on some snacks. Ciao Phil. I'll bring my new Linux book, which is a newer edition to the one James recommended to me awhile back. During our last meeting I left the Linux book inside my car, due to the parking problem we had with 3 graduations taking place at Broadway. FYI: Should there be another issue w/ parking, the Bike Hub closes at 6:000pm, so I don't think there should be a problem using their parking, which is where I parked. If anyone is interested here is a link to the book. *A Practical Guide to Linux Commands, Editors, and Shell Programming (4th Edition)* https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0134774604/ Phil. Re: [Ubuntu Oregon] Ubuntu Hour
Not going to be able to make it to the Ubuntu meeting this evening. I'm still trying to recover from this winters biological virus, which caused me to miss work most of this week, so it's my second day back at work. Not wanting to deplete my energy level any further, I think I'll need to skip this one. Have a great meting everyone. /* * Sent from a system running Ubuntu * */ On Thu, Mar 15, 2018 at 10:15 PM, Cody Smith wrote: > There will be an Ubuntu Hour tomorrow from 6PM to 7PM. Re: [Ubuntu Oregon] Ubuntu Hour tomorrow
Thanks Cody, looking forward to seeing our Loco group this evening a Broadway. Thought I'd let you Linux enthusiast know the good news first. Microportal, the Electronics club in collaboration with Spark Studio Salem, will be hosting a Raspberry Pi Installfest here in Salem, to further help those interested in making with Raspberry Pi get started. Just like a Linux Installfest, the Raspberry Pi Installfest will be a hands-on event where experienced Pi users (we’ll call "Pi Chefs”) assist new Pi users with installing NOOBS (New Out Of Box Software), along with various other Raspberry Pi distros, like Ubuntu Mata or Snappy Core, including FOSS Applications. The Raspberry Pi Installfest is being planned for sometime during the last week of March, after winter term finals. We are letting people know beforehand to allow them plenty of time to order their Raspberry Pi. Some time next month we'll make an announcement in the Statesman Journal w/ exact location and date. If anyone from our Loco Linux / Ubuntu community would like to help during Installfest, or is willing to help organizing. Please let me know, we'd really like to partner with our loco Linux / Ubuntu community. Because of FOSS and the dedication of our Linux community, we can enjoy Pi. Best regards, Phil. [Ubuntu Oregon] Salem Ubuntu hour
Hi all, the Salem Ubuntu hour is taking place today from 6 pm to 7pm at Broadway coffeehouse, 1300 Broadway St NE #100, Salem. Join us for this years first Linux/ Ubuntu hour to demonstrate, learn, or just show us your new Linux-based gadget(s) you may have gotten for Christmas. I'd be interested to know how to update Linux kernel on Samsung galaxy amp prime, or should I dare attempt it. The Apps update automatically, however the kernel is stuck at 7.1.1. Also of topic interest is the latest news on Meltdown and Spectre, so join us for some speculative commentary. TTYL Phil. [Ubuntu Oregon] Salem Ubuntu meeting.
Just letting you know I won't be able to make Ubuntu Hour this evening taking place in Salem. As once again I'm sabotaged by the holiday festivities. I was really hoping to make our last meeting of the year, however my family has made other plans. Have a great meeting, see you all next year. With any luck this next year we "may" actually have a release party for Ubuntu 18.04 LTS Bionic Beaver. It would be fantastic to have a release party themed around the "Beaver." As most know - Oregon is also home to the Beavers, which comprise several athletic teams representing Oregon State University. However that's not the only thing Ubuntu Bionic Beaver has in common with Oregon State Beavers. Both logos are also colored Orange. ;-) And as you all know, the cool commonalities between Linux and Oregon don't stop there. Wishing everyone a very merry Christmas, and a happy happy happy New Year. Thank you everyone for another fantastic year of running Linux and Ubuntu, and thank you all for being part of out tech community. Best Wishes Phil. Re: [Ubuntu Oregon] Firday's Salem Ubuntu Hour, and Planetarium events.
Hi All, Broadway Coffeehouse was able to reserve the Dallas Room, 204, for our meeting on Friday, June 2, from 6pm-7pm. The Dallas room (204) is located on the second floor, towards the back. Some of you may remember meeting there before. The room holds about 10, so we should have plenty of seats available for those wishing to attend. There is no fee to use this room, your patronage helps the Coffeehouse makes it possible for us to continue to use this public space for free. So please thank Broadway Coffeehouse by purchasing a beverage, and letting them know your there for the Linux / Ubuntu meeting. After our meeting at Broadway, I'm heading over to Chemeketa's Planetarium to see their eclipse presentation. Anyones is welcome to follow me over to Chemeketa. For more information on the eclipse presentation, please see our LoCo techie calender of events, for Friday, hosted by Makerspace Salem at: https://makerspacesalem.org/calendar.html Che > I totally understand other priorities taking present for Friday, and hope to catch you both at another Ubuntu hour. On a "Bald" Hill sounds like the perfect place to watch the eclipse "unobstructed". LOL. On a personal note: Over the weekend I attended the Dorkbot meetup, hosted at CTRL-H PDX Hackerspace, located in Portland, and had lots of great tech fun. Hope everyone also had a great weekend. Also currently writing in Python to read USB codes from a joystick, to reverse engineer it for other useful purposes with Linux / Ubuntu. Hi Che, Wow, a broadcast of the Eclipse definitely sounds exciting. Chemeketa will be showing their eclipse presentation for the next two Fridays, the last show date is on the 9th of June, so you still have some time. The presentation is hosted by the astronomy instructor, so always a great show, full of scientific information for the techie brain. As Cody said; Garten should be open next Friday, the store hours are from 11:00am – 3:00pm. I was there this past Friday, they did not have many laptops, however they did have several desktop computers (i5 and i7) ranging from $80 to $180 based on configuration, and of course lots of various cables from $1 to $3 each. I'll keep everyone posted regarding the conference room request at Broadway, they have lots of tutelage going on this week with finals, so well have to wait and see. Have a great memorial day weekend everyone, and thank you veterans for the freedoms and civil liberties we have, like the freedom to use FOSS daily. Ciao for now, Phil. [Ubuntu Oregon] Salem Ubuntu hour.
While a few of our enthusiastic members of Linux/Ubuntu are away attending Linuxfest Northwest, we will be holding local festivities of our own, for those enthusiastic users who couldn't attend Linuxfest Northwest. The LoCo festive gathering of Linux users will take place this evening at Broadway Coffeehouse, 1300 Broadway St NE, here in Salem, from 6:00pm to 7:00pm. [Ubuntu Oregon] Salem Ubuntu Hour
Just letting fellow Linux enthusiasts know, Salem Ubuntu Hour is taking place this coming Friday, Apr 7th. So set your wind-powered sail for the warm fireplace at Broadway Coffeehouse, located at 1300 Broadway St NE, in Salem. The festivities are from 6:00PM to 7:00PM. For anyone interested in GNU/Linux distributions, including our favorite Ubuntu distro, grab a warm drink and come join us for some tech talk. I've been experimenting with how easy it is to do C++ programming on Ubuntu, with nothing to install, I was able to create a program within 15 minutes from inside Terminal. Thanks GNU/Linux community. Ciao for now Phil. Thank you Che for those kind words. It was also a pleasure conversing with you and Linda as well, and I too look forward to next month. Plus I'm waiting for Hollywood to call me should they require someone who looks like an alchemist... LOL. Thanks for contributing to Boinc all those years, and your Ubuntu Touch demo. Norvac is located at 2110 Commercial St NE, in Salem. Sorry to sound like an ad campaign, however I'm the Self-appointed Technology Evangelist in Salem.. LOL.. And, as some of you know, my well laid out plan for technology dominating Salem is workingLOL. Ciao for now Phil. More info at their meetup: https://www.meetup.com/Salem-Makerspace/ I'll have some or our Ubuntu / Linux flyers printer up, and out on the table. Re: [Ubuntu Oregon] Ubuntu Hour Friday
Hi all, We had a total of 6 members attend tonight's meeting, and had a great time at Broadway Coffeehouse. Big thanks to Cody for asking Che and Linda to attend, and for creating our event page. It was great to have met Che, Linda, and Tom. We covered a wide range of topics; Linode.com - A Virtual Private Server (VPN) service, Powerline - A status line plugin for Vim, Termite - An easy to use and configure RS232 terminal program, Recalbox.com - A retro-gaming operating systems with Kodi already included, and Recalbox runs on Raspberry Pi. Plus various ways to install Ubuntu in order to lock-it-down making it more secure. During the meeting, I promised I'd include some links to retro arcade buttons, for that true authentic arcade feel. The i-PAC2 is a USB "keyboard encoder" with 32 inputs and support for trackball and spinner. Is fully programmable key code set. The i-PAC2 looks to the host PC as a standard USB keyboard, which I really like because there is no drivers to install. The Mini-PAC is similar to i-PAC2 except Mini supports PS/2 via optional USB to PS/2 adapter. The i-PAC2 and Mini-PAC can be found at ultimarc.com. Here is where I've found some other arcade stuff, just do a search for "arcade button", or "concave button" while at these sites. Mouser: www.mouser.com Concave Button - various colors, with Microswitch for $1.95/ea. Note: Mouser purchases their buttons from Sparkfun, and sells them for the same SRP. Sparkfun: www.sparkfun.com Concave Button - various colors, with Microswitch for $1.95/ea. Banggood.com: www.banggood.com Arcade button - various colors, with Microswitch for $1.69/ea. Bob's parts: is the least expensive.. http://www.therealbobroberts.net/parts.html#buttons Happ "Microswitch Pushbutton Complete" - various colors, with Microswitch for $1.25/ea Our next Salem Ubuntu Hour meetings will be February 3rd/17th, same bat place, same bat time. Join us for some Ubuntu served with your favorite Java, and a side of Linux distros. This month we will be in the Dallas Room, 204. The Dallas room, 204 is located upstairs towards the back directly across from the elevators. It is the bigger of the Free conference rooms on the second floor and seats up to 10 people comfortably, however it does not have a good Wi-Fi Internet connection, because it's location is somewhat inside a cubbyhole (i.e Briar Patch). So communicating out of the Briar Patch is difficult... For exact room location see building layout here <https://www.dropbox.com/sh/678r47twqe53gs6/AAAHYwclmbFmJ629bfPE6fwVa/Newsletter_Archive/Broadway_Commons_room_diagrams_v1.pd> ! To help pay for our free room accommodations, Broadway Coffeehouse asks that we please purchase something to drink. They have a great assortment of juices, teas, and coffees for under three dollars. Cody has created a LoCo event page, please use the following link (below) to his event page to register for this event, doing so will help us get counted by Canonical, and help with further sponsorship. - Thanks Cody Event page: http://loco.ubuntu.com/events/ubuntu-us-or/3498-salem- ubuntu-hour/ Please RSVP so the paperwork that wxl has to do is easier. This month we may have some out of town guests, Che and Linda Dean, visiting. Che's first taste of Linux was OpenSUSE (KDE) and Ubuntu 8.04, I've heard he is into retro gaming, big time, having installed various game emulators on Ubuntu along with testing Zareason Zeto and SteamOS. Che has also been a contributor to the unofficial Ubuntu Manual project, covering the Thunderbird section for both Ubuntu 11.10 and 12.04. As a retro gamer myself, I'm looking forward to meeting with them too hear more about Zareason Zeto and SteamOS. Please join us in welcoming Che and Linda to Salem Ubuntu Hour. Thanks everyone, Phil. [Ubuntu Oregon] Salem Ubuntu Hour - Conference room.
Hi all, I've recently been going down to Broadway Coffeehouse on occasion, for those who may not know this is where we hold Ubuntu meetings in Salem Oregon. While at Broadway Coffeehouse, I've noticed it's been getting a bit packed lately, so I thought it best for this coming Friday's meeting to request one of their free conference rooms located on the second floor. We have not yet received approval for a conference room, however should we get approved, I'll let everyone know what the room location and number is. Until then, or in the event we don't get approval, we'll meet at the two tables in front of fireplace. This of course is dependent on weather conditions, which so far looks like lots of rain... so situation normal for Salem. ;-) Therefore meeting should take place as regularly scheduled for this Friday, January 20th from 6:00pm to 7:00pm at Broadway Coffeehouse in Salem Oregon. Broadway Coffeehouse is located at 1300 Broadway St NE, Suite 100, Salem, OR 97301. With plenty of parking in back, off of 5th street. Thanks everyone, Phil. Hi Che, it would be great if you could make a meeting. I found a couple of connecting public transportation systems below that connect to Corvallis. If ya both can make it to Salem air port, or the Amtrak / bus station hub, I'd be glad to give you a ride to/from meeting. I have room for four passengers, plus their tech bundle. Email me beforehand to make sure I'm able to make the meeting myself. *Linn-Benton Loop:* Connecting Corvallis, Albany (including Amtrak Station), Oregon State University, and Linn-Benton Community College. O.K. Looking out the window at todays snowfall, I'd say Ubuntu Hour is canceled for this Friday. Thanks Ryein, and have a merry Christmas too. Get well soon James, and take care of your Chromebook. Hopefully you both get well real soon. I agree w/ Cody, it's time to keep warm and stay inside; if anything else, just to code or build a project or two. See ya next year. Hi Cody, Jim Do we want to hold the Ubuntu Hour meeting this coming Friday, Dec 16th? The weather forecast does not look that good, with snow arriving tomorrow (Wednesday) and and more arriving Thursday. Tonight (Tuesday) - Snow, mainly after 11am with freezing fog, so I would avoid going out in that fog, one may freeze.. Wednesday - 1 to 3 inches of snow possible, with more possible on Thursday. Friday's high 33 deg, so cold even without the snow. Re: [Ubuntu Oregon] Ubuntu Hour 10/21
I maybe able to make this meeting. I recently installed a full-install of Ubuntu 16.04.1 LTS, and having some issues with Skype, and Google-Talk. Found its best to apt-get Skype verses installing it from Skype.com. It seems the later (from Skype) does not include status-bar message area for icon, where the repository does. Also note: For those using Skype, the application is no longer supported, in favor of their newer Cloud version, which is browser-based. I personally don't want to constantly keep a browser window open, so I can receive Skype calls, so I'm glad I could get it working with Ubuntu 16.04.1. I'll talk more about this topic this evening. Thanks for the meeting reminder, Phil. Re: [Ubuntu Oregon] Ubuntu Hour or State Fair, conundrum.
Good point James makes - It's a three-day weekend, so some people maybe gone for the weekend. My tentative plan, is being at Broadway Coffeehouse (our clubhouse) from 5:00pm to about 6:30pm, this way we can at least attempt to keep with consistent branding / scheduling, just in case someone shows up for the Ubuntu meeting. Glad to hear Cody can make it to the clubhouse at 5 also. I would like to catch the last part of the Motorsports Championships, featuring Monster Trucks and Tuff Trucks, as I've never seen them before. So I plan to leave Ubuntu hour early at 6:30pm, and head to the fair. This is of course, contingent on me bing able to leave the office before 5 o'clock, so again this is my tentative "dream" plan... [Ubuntu Oregon] Ubuntu Hour or State Fair, conundrum.
As most of you know, this Friday, September 2nd, is our scheduled Salem Ubuntu Hour, normally held at Broadway Coffeehouse at 6pm. Also taking place this Friday Sept 2nd is Oregon State Fair's "Mighty Friday" - That means fair admission is just $1 all day long, plus admission includes concert, and all events. That being said; what do we want to do? Q1. Do we want to cancel this Friday's Salem Ubuntu Hour do to the fair, move meeting time up one hour, or perhaps, all meet somewhere at the State Fare? As for myself, I'm in favor of meeting at Broadway one hour early (5:00pm), then heading to the State Fair. Below are some attractions you may be interested in seeing while at the fair, which also take place Friday Sept 2nd. If anyone is interested in ride sharing to the fair, please let me know, and I can meet you at Broadway at 5:00pm. *Motorsports Championships:* The finals of the Northwest Motorsports Series Spectacular, featuring Monster Trucks and Tuff Trucks. Friday, Sept. 2nd, 6:00-7:30 pm At the State Fair’s Machine Mania Pavilion. *Montgomery Gentry concert:* Friday, Sept. 2nd, 7:00 PM Approximately 6,000 general admission seats for each concert are FREE with paid admission to the Fair on a first come, first served basis. Or advance VIP tickets for $35. Your VIP ticket entitles you to: Reserved Seating, Admission to the Fair. *S.T.R.E.A.M:* STREAM focuses on six aspects of education - Science, Technology, Reading, Engineering, Arts and Math. STREAM - First Robotics Competition Stronghold. High school teams compete head to head on a special playing field with robots they have designed, built, and programmed. Friday, September 2nd. Time: unknown. *Glen’s Gizmos:* A traveling museum composed of well over 60 hands-on learning stations that bring science, technology, engineering, art and math to schools and venues like the Oregon State Fair. *Artisans Village:* The annual gathering of artisans from Oregon and beyond. *Laser / Pyrotechnics event:* Oregon State Fair is proud to present a very dynamic, 10-minute laser and special effects pyrotechnics event. Nightly from 9:45pm to 9:55pm. General Fare Parking is $5.00. Please let me know what the general consensus is regarding holding Salem Ubuntu Hour at the fair, or perhaps holding it earlier at Broadway, or canceling it, do to fair. Best regards Phil.
