Well, I agree, to a degree, but there´s workarounds, like scheduling a print job of some picture every 10 days or so. Since I have my inkjets connected to a network print server, this is easy to do. And come the time that their OS has surpassed the driver, their (generally crappy) printer is nearly worn out, or consumables are hard to get, or ridiculously expensive, so they'll buy a new one, and repeat the cycle. Printers are a prime example of this. They're non-robust plasticky things. Ink or toner is expensive. Print heads or drums wear out, and they're expensive. I've two ancient printers that are still in reasonably good working condition, a HP LaserJet 4L and a HP LaserJet 4M. I'd like to keep using them, but the quote for one of the toner cartridges was more than a new printer. Of course, I'll be better off getting the toner cartridge (and so is the environment), but then I'm assessing this on-the-whole. Most people will just look at the initial cost. Re: Samsung ML1640
Apple's Mac OS X provides driverless installs for both printers and image input devices. Of course the printers must have drivers from somewhere. OS X bundles that Gutenprint drivers, that are obtained from the Open Source community. I'm pretty sure that Apple either requires or maybe somehow convinces the printer vendors to maintain their Gutenprint drivers. From time to time I manually update all my third-party software on OS X; when I went to get the latest Epson driver, it said to run Software Update from the Apple Menu in OS X. So it can be done. Steve Jobs and Richard Stallman haven't always been the best of friends, but in general Apple has contributed a great deal to the Open Source community. I don't know because I never checked, but I imaging that Apple contributes patches to the Gutenprint maintainers. I don't have a clue how the image input is done. That's for scanners and digital cameras. That part doesn't come from Linux and is quite likely under Non-Disclosure Agreement, as many color image input device vendors have all manner of trade secrets around color management. It's not so good for Open Source, but for the end-user like my Mom, I bought her a nice digital camera for Christmas and It Just Worked with iPhoto on her iMac. There was no software to install. Having to hunt down and install drivers for arcane hardware is a Windows thing. There are lots of driver search databases, as well as binary driver installer websites for Windows. I've used them when hunting for drivers for obscure hardware and they are a real PITA. Linux need not be that way. -- Don Quixote de la Mancha Dulcinea Technologies Corporation Software of Elegance and Beauty http://www.dulcineatech.com quix...@dulcineatech.com -- users mailing list users@lists.fedoraproject.org To unsubscribe or change subscription options: https://admin.fedoraproject.org/mailman/listinfo/users Guidelines: http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Mailing_list_guidelines

Besides all the prior answers, I could suggest tu use Splix. I used it with several distribution including Fedora and it works great with my Samsung ML-1640. AFAIK Ubuntu ships Splix per default, so I assume that it is used for PlugPlay. Take a look at http://splix.ap2c.org/ to get more information. Although, there's no official package for Fedora. I tried to build one in past, but can't recall exactly what I did to get it to work. Here are some links with documentation what I did: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=674619 http://sourceforge.net/projects/splix/forums/forum/605559/topic/4084995 Let me know if you are interested to use Splix for Fedora, then I could try to provide more help. -- users mailing list users@lists.fedoraproject.org To unsubscribe or change subscription options: https://admin.fedoraproject.org/mailman/listinfo/users Guidelines: http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Mailing_list_guidelines

I´m more saddened about the lack of understanding by consumers in general over the use of more or less OPEN STANDARDS, which in the world of printing is PCL and PostScript. Get a printer with PCL or postscript and any OS, from 8-bit Geos to AmigaOS to ancient Unixes to modern Linux, can work with it. Yet, all that normal users seems to care about is that a given device has Linux drivers. Well, propietary Linux drivers with closed protocols and languages are not very good either.
