Btw, you may have missed this, but I did correct my earlier statement in
that earlier e-mail. So we are now on the same page: I agree with you.

It was the first bit I got confused on:

I created a makeyup pks name:

sudo dnf install bebian zikula
[sudo] password for frank:
No package bebian available.

It installed zikula fine
So dnf will ignore non existing pkgs ,
was what I was trying to show also I think.

OK, I think that things snipped out out it out of context.

My response: But this (that --releasever has to be included) is not
true.

This point has nothing to do with dnf and as I clarified, this is not
what I was talking about.

This is not true. Try yum install zikula on a F20 machine.

But my point is that in case yum does not find something, it continues
on with the others after mentioning that that was not found. dnf
just quit.

Try:

sudo yum install gvfs-obexftp festival

gvfs-obexftp is no longer available and yum will note that and go on to
install the other (festival).

sudo dnf install gvfs-obexftp festival

(and it does the same as yum).

Correction: Actually, my complaint is no longer true. A recent update
appears to have fixed this,

So, I withdraw my objection. Now, if only it could handle delta rpms, I
would be happy!

Thank you. Eventually, this will be added, I am sure, as also the
option to continue if it does not find a package (and is asked to
install a bunch).

Other than these two issues, I found dnf just fine as a substitute to
yum.

Re: dnf-yum observation - link corrected

2014-01-09 Thread Ranjan Maitra
I tried dnf. One major issue that I did not like is that I asked it to
install a bunch of stuff, one of which was not available (in F20). That
meant dnf would not install anything.

Also it was not clear to me that it was using deltarpms. Of course, I
did not look into all possibilities so there may be some setting that I
needed to have.

Other than these, it worked fine for me.

It is for some who don't like pulling 100+mb of metadata say each day,
with a daily run. If there's only 20mb of updates.

If you do want more updates as per Jan suggestion

The extra metadate also doesn't bother some, me being one.

Just a note here: if you want the MD to be synced up every time you run yum
(which is not the case for me and I suppose many users will appreciate the
fact that dnf doesn't check for MD every single time), check out the clean
command, you have more options ranging from dnf clean expire-cache to dnf
clean all.

Ex. dnf clean all && dnf update

Thanks
