2014-04-19 Thread Robert Fry
Dear sir or madam,

I am wanting to know a bit about open office. From the programmer to
its newest news of it. Who started it? How long did it take to get the idea
out there? Stuff like that, if you could.

James Ho is on leave from 21 April to 27 April 2014.

Could you please advise me if any permissions are needed to have Open
Office on display? It would mostly be incidental/background but there may
be instances where an actor interacts with the computer a little.

Short answer is Yes you can, to all your questions. Perhaps most
significantly compared to commercially licensed products, given the stated
desire to alter it, you're free to do that as well.

Hello Miranda, thank you for considering OpenOffice... and Alan is
mostly correct.

However, situations like this one, where our products are displayed in a
TV series, often imply a discussion about trademarks. OpenOffice can
grant you a specific permission (for free). You can read more at
http://www.apache.org/foundation/marks/faq/ and to request a permission
you should contact the Project Management Committee at
priv...@openoffice.apache.org ; it will be enough that you forward your
original e-mail, no paperwork required.

Section 6 protects our trademarks. This is important for us in a number
of situations, especially to protect users when we detect fraudulent
activity.

Regards,
  Andrea.

Thanks for adding this bit Andrea. Glad I did point her at the license and
suggest her attorneys should take a look.

For future reference is trademark the only element that would require
authorization in a situation where there is a public display and/or the
product is altered?

Apache OpenOffice 4.0.0 will be flagged by the new Gatekeeper facility in Mac
OS X Mountain Lion. This is a new feature to help guard against malware on Mac
systems. There is a procedure laid out at the following link to allow
applications not installed from the Mac App store to run. See the article at
Mac support at http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5290.

from the release notes for 4.0.0, which also apply to 4.0.1; see here:

Migration from OpenOffice 3 to new version 4

2014-04-19 Thread Sue Woolf
Hello

I just downloaded the new version of Open Office Calc, migrating thus from vsn
3 to vsn 4.

Annoyingly I HAVE LOST AN IMPORTANT SPREADSHEET…why was it not converted into
the new format under the new version I downloaded…I am cross!

Tried to do a system restore to get rid of new version, did not work…

The new version uses the same file formats as the old, so there should
be no issue there. I have been using OpenOffice for years and never had
a problem moving between versions. Why do you think there's a problem.
What error messages are you getting? Did you download from
www.openoffice.org? I hope you didn't pay someone for it, as it's free.
