With the Foxit Reader installer, I encountered the same problem that I did with OpenOffice.org 3.2 installer - it insisted that I lacked sufficient rights on my own system (I have admin rights). The difference is that the OOo installer eventually relented and I got 3.2 installed despite the protests - and without any change to my system (Windows XP Pro x64). The Foxit installer just keeps crapping out after the splash-screen and the warning. Too bad. I was prepared to try it and upgrade to the pay-for version. Maybe I'll see if I can get it to install on my laptop at home, with Windoze 7 Ultimate. - Kevin bumpf follows... -->|The information contained in this electronic mail transmission may be privileged and confidential, and therefore, protected from disclosure. I just wanted to add that fact to the thread, lest someone think that printing to CUPS-PDF is the equivalent of exporting from OOo or Scribus. Regarding doing an OCR of a printout of the file, that is not generally necessary. Most OCR programs these days can work on a bitmap of the file. So just print the PDF to an image format and then OCR the image format. No need to waste paper or even own a printer or scanner. Having said that, OCR programs are far from perfect. They save typing, but you'll still have to spend some time cleaning up the errors. And you will typically lose design formatting, e.g., indents. - To unsubscribe, e-mail: users-unsubscr...@openoffice.org For additional commands, e-mail: users-h...@openoffice.org

I've never used it. How well does it handle "complex" layouts, like multiple columns? Like a data sheet or brochure? Or a FrameMaker document with side-heads and inset text boxes? Good old Acrobat used to 'randomly' jump all over the page when you attempted to select text. I would basically just transcribe (re-type) text from PDFs into Word or OOo or FrameMaker, rather than fight with the PDF itself. I've heard rumors that modern PDF creation pays more attention to preserving text continuity, so export utilities can do a better job. It would make my life easier if quality, trustable text (or .doc or .odt) files could be had automatically. Are you recommending Foxit based on reading about it, or as a satisfied user? Dave Stevens wrote, I have to convert a .pdf for which I no longer have access to the original .odt format. I've installed the sun-pdfimport extension and can open the file in draw. If I read the documents right I should now be able to resave in .odt but neither save as nor export offers me this format. Does anyone know how to complete the saving process? As far as I can tell (with OOo 3.2, Windows), Draw can't save or export to Writer format. The process you use will depend on how much layout you want to preserve. An ordinary PDF Reader (Adobe Reader, at least) will let you select text and paste into Writer, but losing layout. You can also individually copy and paste images. But that process will treat every end of line as an end of paragraph. Yo may want to check out the free on-line PDF to .DOC converter that preserves paragraphs: http://www.pdftoword.com/ -- Bob Long - To unsubscribe, e-mail: users-unsubscr...@openoffice.org For additional commands, e-mail: users-h...@openoffice.org
