[Veritas-bu] NBU upgrade from 6.5.3 to 6.5.5.

2010-02-24 Thread Michitsch, John
We are in the middle of upgrading our NBU backup environment from version 6.5.3
to 6.5.5. The master and media server upgrades were fine. We are having
issues with more than a handful of Windows clients. The clients used to finish
without issue, they are now all ending in error code 1 with the following:

2/24/2010 6:37:52 PM - begin writing
2/24/2010 6:44:16 PM - Warning bpbrm(pid=2064) from client xxx-: WRN -

Instrumentation\WMI (BEDS 0xE0009421: No component files present on the
snapshot.)
2/24/2010 6:44:18 PM - Warning bpbrm(pid=2064) from client xxx-: WRN -
can't open object: Shadow Copy Components:\System Service\Event Logs\Event Logs
(BEDS 0xE0009421: No component files present on the snapshot.)
2/24/2010 7:33:57 PM - end writing; write time: 00:56:05
the requested operation was partially successful(1)

They are all failing with the exact same missing Shadow Copy Components files.
Searching the Syamntec forums didn't turn up anything, hoping someone else has
seen it.

Thanks.

[Veritas-bu] vault duplication issue

2009-12-01 Thread Michitsch, John
Has anyone seen an issue with a vault profile where for every image to be
duplicated a new tape is loaded? We have multiple vault policies set up and
they write all images in each batch to the same tape until the tape is full,
then it loads a new tape. We created a new profile the same way as the others.
This new profile appears to be changing tapes for each image in each batch
job. Has anyone seen this before? It is a media server duping images off of a
data domain appliance writing to an IBM 3494 library/3592 tape drive.

Thank you for any assistance.

2008-11-10 Thread Michitsch, John
Is there a way to configure Netbackup to request media if a media server runs
out of scratch media during a duplication process instead of the default of
killing all dupe jobs and ending in a 96 status? Backup Exec does this nicely,
it pauses the jobs and sends alerts asking for more media, when scratch media
is added, the jobs continue. I hope nbu can do this as well...

Re: [Veritas-bu] multistream a user-defined backup.

Yes, but the problem with the full backup is it truncates the logs, and we do
not want that to happen. SO form what you're saying, there is no way to
accomplish this? The reason for not doing multiple bpbackup commands is I want
to manually add a bpbackup stream when a new database is created, that is why
I'd like to do with the wildcards...

You're right - user-defined backups won't break into multiple streams.
You can do multiple bpbackup commands. If you do them in rapid
succession, NetBackup will usually multiplex them correctly onto a tape.
Something like:

for dir in Microsoft Information Store:\*SG*
do
  bpbackup -p policy_name -s ubak_schedname -t 16 $dir
done

Of, if there's sufficient permissions, you can build a policy then
call the scheduler to perform the backup. The scheduler can do the
multi-stream inherently.

Policy has
INCLUDE: Microsoft Information Store:\*SG*
Allow Multiple Streams: Checked

Build it with a full policy but no schedule defined.

Then call the scheduler:
bpbackup -i -p policy -s sched -h host

Rosenkoetter, Gabriel wrote:
You shouldn't be specifying either the active or passive node name as a

Also, note that you must run the NetBackup Client Service as an AD-level (not
local) account that has local admin access on each server and admin access to
the Exchange cluster for LCR/CCR snapshot backups. Running the client as
LocalSystem will not work. (The documentation's a bit hazy on this point.
It's clear that that's necessary for individual mailbox backups, it's not so
clear that it's required for the cluster backups, but it makes sense when you
think about it: the Exchange cluster isn't logically attached to either node,
so neither node's LocalSystem has sufficient permissions.)

 Folks,

 We're running Netbackup 6.5.2.

We're just now setting up a Netbackup Policy for Exchange 2007 running in a
 CCR cluster.
The backup has been defined to backup the passive node first, but if not
 available, backup
 the active node.

The question I have is client definition in the Snapshot policy (within
 Exchange Policy) required
 to backup the Exchange database:

When we put both physical CCR cluster node names in the policy's client list,
 it starts backups
for both nodes, and looks like it does snapshots for both nodes, when only
 the passive node
should be snapshotting, and getting backed up. Why is that happening ??
 Anybody have a
passive node Exchange backup set up and working ???

An obvious solution would be to take the active node server out of the
 policy's client list, but
then if a failover occurred , and the passive node switched to what is now
 the active node,
would the passive node backup still work without that physical server in
 the policy's client list ??

The Netbackup documentation update for 6.5.2 is not too clear on this !!

 Thanks Much,

Hi,

I have come across a problem that I am hoping someone here can assist me with.

I am running a NetBackup environment with one master server and two media
servers all running v5.1MP6 (and on Solaris9) these are backing up 250+ clients
which are a mixture of Windows, Linux and Solaris and some MSSQL clients; again
the clients are running 5.1MP6.

I also have a NetApp filer supplying NAS and San storage to some of the
aforementioned clients.

So, my question is how do I set up the NetBackup agent to capture the data that
is held within a CIFs share that is being presented to a Windows client? Is
this possible with a standard client license?

Backing up the Windows client using the ALL LOCAL DRIVES directive and
selecting the Backup network drives box under attributes does not appear to
capture the data.

Thanks in advance,

Steve.

The bperror variants will only report back as deep as your log depth.

If you want backups on tape for long periods of time, use bpimagelist.

Note: these aren't *all* backups for that time period, just backups that
haven't expired yet.

[Veritas-bu] master vs. media servers behind firewalls.

2008-04-28 Thread Michitsch, John
This is a question about a Netbackup 6.5 deployment. We are currently using
separate master servers for our internal clients and our external clients in
both of our primary datacenters. This equates to four separate backup
environments to manage. We would like to have one master for all of our
environments. We are thinking about one master server in our primary location,
a media server in the secondary location and media servers for the two external
environments. We would open ports to allow the external media servers to
communicate through the firewall to our internal master server, giving us a
single view for all backups.
However, when reading the documentation, Symantec recommends having a
separate master per firewall domain and using NOM to manage all of them. We do
not want to pay for three additional master server licenses and a NOM license.
Is anyone already doing this, or have any opinions as to why I would not do it?

Thanks.

The \Program Files\Veritas\NetBackup\db\class contains all of your policies and
their respective configurations.

Guys,

Can anyone tell me how I can copy the Policies over to a new Master?
I don't need to bring in the catalog ... I just want the same policies and
attributes, schedules etc.
Using Windows for bother Masters .. how can I do this?

thanks
Jackson

[Veritas-bu] script user backups of Exchange 2007.

2008-03-27 Thread Michitsch, John
Does anyone know if you can script a user directed backup in NBU 6.5.1? We do
not want NBU to truncate the transaction logs as we are using Netbackup
Snapmanager for Exchange to truncate the logs. Looking at the documentation, I
only see how to create a user backup, but it doesn't look like I can script it.

Thanks.

for Exchange

Re: [Veritas-bu] MSSQL Agent Backups

2008-02-13 Thread Michitsch, John
We have an active/active SQL cluster with two virtual SQL instances. We
configured a SQL policy to back up the virtual SQL instances. We also have a
Windows policy to back up the OS'es on each node.

Good evening,

We will be using the NBU Agent for backing up MSSQL databases
(instances),

RANT Portion

Configuring the policies in netbackup (6.5.1 btw) following the
Veritas Netbackup for Microsoft SQL Server Administrators Guide :-)
going through configuring the systems in a Microsoft Clustered
environment.

My Colleague (windows admin) and I (unix admin) are
confused/arguing with 1 aspect and I would like to ask other's how they
have configured it.

In the doco (pg125 item 3) it says to Create a standard backup
policy (say, STDPOLICY). Add all physical names in the cluster into the
client list of STDPOLICY.

My interpretation is, this is to create a Windows-NT Type
policy to ensure you are backing up the cluster node.

How my colleague has configured it under instruction from
symantec I understand this is a Standard type policy (aka Unix/Linux)
that SQL requires.

/RANT Portion

Back to my question, How have others configured SQL agent ( and I
suppose the filesystem as well) Policies for MSSQL server in clustered
environments ?
