[Veritas-bu] tracing tape drive waiting for resource

2009-07-09 Thread POUSSARD, Gilles (APX SYNSTAR)
Hi,

My tape drives are shared by SSO between all the media servers. I use NBU 6.0
and 6.5

Some of jobs someone take a long time to start backing up because thay are
waiting for tape drive resources. Clicking on the job by the Java interface
show the waiting for resource message. All the tape drives are busy by the
other media servers.

Does anyone know in which log files can we trace the waiting for resource for a
tape drive availability, without using the java interface to check how many
times this problem can occur ?? It is to verify the frequency of this resource
problem

Thanks for your help

Gilles.

This might be of some use for you.

It is recommended to have all NetBackup (NB) master, media, client, and
database extensions on the same release and at the same patch level. In larger
environments it is not possible to update all servers and clients
simultaneously. With versions of NetBackup preceding 4.5, it was required that
all master and media servers be at the same patch level. Beginning with
NetBackup DataCenter 4.5, there has been some support for running mixed patch
level versions of 4.5. These same rules have been carried forward to NetBackup
5.1. This type of support enables NetBackup servers to run a mixture of
NetBackup major releases and patches in the same environment. This philosophy
gives rise to a number of general multi-version co-existence rules, together
with some version-specific rules.

I doubt you can bounce a 6.0 master while a media is running anything. In my
experience that kills anything running immediately. (6.0MP4 all the way around
here.) As far as client being ahead of the master, you *can* do it, but your
asking for trouble. If there is a client and server bug fix your trying to
accomplish your potentially going to make things worse by applying the fix to
only one end. In the end its always a tough call. Lose backup data trying to
fix a problem versus live with the problem for a while. There's just never a
good time for server outages.

I have a long running backup (expected to take 5 days) running from a Windows
6.0 Windows client. The master server is Solaris 6.0MP3 and the backup is being
staged to a Solaris media server (also version 6.0 MP3). I have a ticke open
for on another Windows client which support wants me to upgrade from 6.0GA to
6.0MP4. So here are my questions.

- Once the backup started talking to the media server can I stop and start the
master server without killing the backup?

- If the answer is yes, then can I upgrade the master server to 6.0MP4 while
the media server is still running 6.0MP3? Will that cause problems.

- If the answer to the first question was no, then can I still upgrade the
Windows client to 6.0MP4 while I leave the server at 6.0MP3?

2009-06-09 Thread POUSSARD, Gilles (APX SYNSTAR)
Thanks,

I thought it was not so complicated..

I red the 6.5 administrator's guide and in page 721, there is the chapter :
Moving the NetBackup database from one host to another.

I will try this for moving the 6.5.3 EMM database from a Solaris to a Linux
redhat.

If someone else has experience about that, their ideas are welcomed.

Sure... We migrated from an AIX to Windows Master and the DBA discovered it was
not as simple as unloading and loading the media tables. The database schema
was different between the two versions. Some of the commands used to create
tables and load tables are listed below.

They were able to successfully retrieve the media volume information from the
old master server to a new master on a different hostname by connecting to the
NBDB database and unloading only the EMM Media tables and loading the tables
into the database on the new server. Once that was done, I copied the images
folder from the old server to new server and everything is working fine.

Okay, thanks!

But, that skipped a question: have you opened a case with Symantec about the
tuning question?

It's a legitimate feature request to have different data buffer sizes for
different media types, especially since no small number of people will be
living in a mixed 9940/Ultrium environment right now.

Re: [Veritas-bu] LTO4 Media Type

2008-10-16 Thread POUSSARD, Gilles (APX SYNSTAR)

Hello,

You can choose HCART or HCART2.

I have a question on LTO4

Did someone work on tuning LTO4 with NetBackup.

I personnaly have a media server with LTO4 and 9940B. If I modify my
SIZE_DATA_BUFFERS from 256K to 1024K ( for LTO4 performance purpose ), then the
backup to the 9940B generates an error 84.

Unfortunately, we can't create on the same media server, a SIZE_DATA_BUFFERS
for LTO4 and another file SIZE_DATA_BUFFERS for 9940B. So to be compliant with
the always used 9940B, I was obliged to let the SIZE_DATA_BUFFERS to 256K.

Gilles.

Hi,

I did the following test with success

I tested on a basic environment backing up the /var sleleton ans backing up
completely /var/log subfolder

bash-2.03# cat exclude_list.test-s240rbk1_2

/var/*/*

bash-2.03# cat include_list.test-s240rbk1_2

/var/log/*

The number of asterix is important.

Best regards,

Include lists override exclude lists. So your policy would have / in the
backup selection, select cross mount points, and then create an exclude_list
file on the client with / in it, and an include_list file with the specific
folders that you want backed up. This should be straightforward.

Hello Gilles,

Please be more specific: what's on your backup selection (on your Policy)? and
what are the directories you want to exclude? (and the exceptions to the
exclude_list..)

[Veritas-bu] pb restoring system_state of Windows 2000 SP4

2007-08-09 Thread POUSSARD, Gilles \(APX SYNSTAR\)
Hi,

Help please...

My environment is:

Master server Solaris 10 NetBackup 5.1 MP5 or 6.0 MP4
Client W2K SP4 client Netbackup 5.1MP5

I try to do a system restore of a W2K SP4 NetBackup client by running
the following process:

- I reinstall on the same hardware system a fresh W2K SP4 server with
the same partitionning and without integrating in a specific Windows domain.
- I reinstall NetBackup client 5.1MP5
- I run on the client the commande w2koption -restore -same_hardware 1
- From the NetBackup Administrator java interface, I choose all the
drives and the System_State, select Restore everything to its original location
and choose Overwrite existing files
- The restore run with success.

After a few second, before or after I could ran again the w2koption
-restore -same_hardware 1 command, the W2K goes in an eternal reboot cycle, and
I don't know what is happening ???

Can somebody help me ??

Is it correct to restore System_State withe the Overwrite existing
files option ??

It seems that with W2003 client, I don't have this problem.

Best regard,

Gilles.

Re: [Veritas-bu] Win2k3 64 bit clients - NBU 6.0 MP4

2007-08-01 Thread POUSSARD, Gilles (APX SYNSTAR)
Yes it works,

First install 6.0 MP2 for x64 bits clients , then install patch 6.0 MP4 for x64
bits clients

If you want to use the x64 machine as a media server and if you are in a ACSLS
library control environment, you need ACSLS libattach 1.4.2 which is available
since July and for libattach 1.4.2 to be supported, you need 6.0 MP5 which will
be available very soon. I didn't still tested, but that is Symantec told me.

Best regards,

Gilles.

It looks like that NBU6.0 MP2 for x64 clients is the
base software for fresh install on x64 clients. After
installing this software it can be upgraded to MP4.

Anyone tried this?

X64 absolutely requires a 64 bit client. It is
 not
  to be
confused with the Itanium client. You have to go
  to the
Symantec licensing portal to get at the x64
 client

   Works just fine.
