Re: [Veritas-bu] Slow performance problem, cause unknown

2006-04-24 Thread Tristan Ball

My initial response is to check for the obvious/frequent issues..

* Did you add the NET_BUFFER_SIZE to server and client?
* What's being backed up? Lots of small files in big directories are famous
for causing _really_ slow backups - and I'm guessing you've only got 1 or 2
drives in the U60?
* What's your tape media's required rate? If you're using LTO-2/3 drives,
and feeding them at 2000kb/sec, you're going to have problems with them
shoeshining.

* Is there a network bottleneck? Duplex or autonegotation issues?
* Is there a disk bottleneck? I'm a fan of iostat -dxzcn. Look for high
asvc_t times..

If there's nothing obvious wrong there, then you're best of turning up the
debugging and looking at that. The link that Richard Mansell sent you is a
good start, even on the Sun's, and the 6.0 planning and tuning guide goes
into the same stuff, in more detail, and I believe most of it is still valid
on a 5.0 system - in particular the wait delay counters stuff..
http://support.veritas.com/docs/281842 is the link.

Regards,
   Tristan.

Im having very poor performance on a Sun Ultra 60
with Solaris 9 and NBU 5.0GA. I've added the
following files to the system with the asociated
values:

NET_BUFFER_SIZE = 65536
NUMBER_DATA_BUFFERS = 32
SIZE_DATA_BUFFERS = 262144

My /etc/system has these parameters:

set shmsys:shminfo_shmmax=33554432
set shmsys:shminfo_shmmin=1
set shmsys:shminfo_shmmni=512
set shmsys:shminfo_shmseg=100
set msgsys:msginfo_msgmap=512
set msgsys:msginfo_msgmnb=65536
set msgsys:msginfo_msgmni=1024
set msgsys:msginfo_msgmax=8192
set msgsys:msginfo_msgssz=32
set msgsys:msginfo_msgseg=8192
set msgsys:msginfo_msgtql=1024
set semsys:seminfo_semmap=64
set semsys:seminfo_semmni=2048
set semsys:seminfo_semopm=128
set semsys:seminfo_semmsl=300
set semsys:seminfo_semmns=2048
set semsys:seminfo_semmnu=1024
set semsys:seminfo_semume=64

So, why am I only getting a backup that starts at only
2000 KB/sec and then slows town to 300 KB/sec? It may
be an obvious answer, but I can't see it.

Thanks for the help!

I know it is for Windows servers but I found this tech note quite useful
as it explains how to use the debug logs to see if the delay is client
or media server based:-
