Re: [Videolib] media editing lab equipment?

2011-01-05 Thread Junior Tidal
I'm in the process of adding some editing equipment in our media lab as well.
Currently, we have a couple of mac towers loaded with Final Cut, iMovie, and
iDVD. The iMovie and iDVD is primarily for users who have beginner skills at
video editing. We also use Garageband and Audacity for the same reason, but if
money was not issue, then I would load these machines with Pro Tools.

We also have an analog to dv box so we can place vhs material (usually from the
college archive) onto the machines. I would also recommend getting additional
external hard drives for back up purposes. Right now, we're using a couple of
WD My Book Studio drives.

We use two Avid Media Composer systems in our media lab. The academic price is
$300 ($500 for a large bundle with other software). I use Avid primarily
because it is the most common in our TV market and many of the editors in town
also use the product. I would never claim its better (or worse) than any of
the other products. Much of the video industry uses Final Cut or Avid.

For $300 it's a great program.

Hello all,
I am trying to develop a perfect-world, money-no-object scenario for a pair of
media editing labs. Primarily, this is the goal to shoot for as we begin to
more fully equip our nascent labs, but the scenario will also play into some
request for monies.

Based on your experiences and expertise, what would you include in such a
scenario? I would happily take either types of items or specific models.

Well, duh. Chicano!: The History of the Mexican American Civil Rights

Thanks anyway! J

Happy New Year! I have been asked to investigate the purchase of a title -
with PPR - and am striking out but thought I'd turn to the trusty wise ones at
Videolib before I say I've given up. Here's the info:

Chicano!: History of the Mexican American Civil Rights Movement. A 4-part
program originally produced in 1996 and broadcast on PBS, available then in VHS
format. Later, in 2007, a 2-disc DVD edition was put out by National Latino
Communications Center (NLCC) Educational Media, which I think is/was affiliated
with UCLA(?). Anyway, links found for NLCC all fail and every phone number
I've found is inactive.

Does anyone know anything about NLCC or about the Chicano! set?

TIA,

Re: [Videolib] promo copies of music/advance reading books UPDATE

2011-01-05 Thread Jaeschke, Myles
Hello,
Just wanted to give an update on 9th Circuit Courts ruling on whether or not
"promo" Cd/DVD etc. can be legally sold (using "first sale" doctrine). The 9th
Circuit upheld the lower courts ruling yesterday in effect saying there is no
infringement on copyright in regards to said "promotional" materials. Based on
this ruling I think a library is on solid ground should they choose to add
materials such as these (including donated radio promo CDs) to their
collections.

Regarding the tangential question of whether the promo music case would affect
library use of Advance Reading Copies: I think it's different. It's my
impression that the content may change slightly (if only for proofreading)
between the advance reading copy and the final published book. Cover art and
other details may change as well. So it's a legal and a practical matter,
bringing up a complicated cataloging issue as well.

There are promo music CDs out there that have different/no cover art, or with
only a sort of "draft" content. The ones I'm referring to in this scenario are
identical Music CDs that are released to media before retail stores.

I wonder if the labels will change their attitude towards dealers/retailers
selling their " promos " now.

Years ago, when I owned The Record Hunter chain in NYC, the labels had a
variety of punishments for dealers that sold their promotional samples ( new
