Re: do not update messenger above V100!!!

2017-01-20 Thread Jennie Facer
Hi all,

I like Donna don't have any of the problems mentioned here either. I am running
an iPhone 7 with 10.2. The one that isn't labeled on the bottom there is a
photos tab. It wants allow for the camera. I tapped on it just to find out.
That is the only unclear tab and no unclear buttons. Sorry you are having such
a hard time.

I have had a similar problem for a few versions now but it appears that it's
not present for all voiceover users.
Thanks to Help I received on the list I learned how to find the send button and
that suits my needs for now. I did send them a report also bought we will see
what happens.

I noticed that the third of out the 5 tabs at the bottom is not labelled, for
me it says from left to right:
Home, Calls, Tab 3 of 5, Groups, People
When I double tap on where Voiceover says “Tab 3 of 5” Voiceover says “Tap to
take photo or video” and I get a screen with a Close button at the top left,
then a button to turn the flash on, a button to “Flip Camera” which is followed
by Voiceover saying “Backfacing Camera” and then I have buttons labelled
“Stickers”, “Draw”, “Text” and a “Previous” and “Next” button.
If I go to the “Home” tab I see all my conversations, I have a “Settings”
button at the top left, a search field in the middle and a “New Conversation”
button at the top right.
My conversations are announced as to whether they are “Unread” if they are new
and Voiceover says “Actions available” which tells me there are rotor options
which are Activate (default), Mute, Delete and More.
More gives me a pop-up menu with Block, Mark as Spam, Archive, Mark as Unread
(or mark as read if it’s unread) and Cancel.
If I double tap to open a conversation I get a “Home, back” button at the top
left, the name of the person in the middle followed by when they were last
active and at the top right are “Audio Call” and “Video Call”.
I am just looking at a message where somebody just sent me a single message, it
is read out perfectly with time and all and if I swipe right Voiceover says
“Type in message… text field is editing”.
Underneath this is a row of items I can find by touching/dragging my finger or
I can swipe right and all are announced:
Emoji, Camera, Photos, Stickers, Gifs, Voice, Games, More and Like.
As soon as I start typing something th “Like” button at the far right changes
to a “Send” button.
The only oddity is that the far left item, Emoji, says “Selected” even though
the regular keyboard is up. If I double tap on it the Emoji keyboard shows and
the icon now says “Text, selected” and I can double tap on that to go back to
the regular keyboard or there is also a “Toggle Text input” button at the very
bottom left of the Emoji keyboard. If I use this to change back to the regular
keyboard the top left item now says “Text” and if I double tap it it goes back
to “Emoji,

Re: updating an app

2017-01-20 Thread Gerardo Corripio
Go to the App Store; at the bottom, there are several tabs such as
Search, and at the very right bottom, there's one called Updates.
Double-tap on that one, and the apps that need updating will show up.
Either double-tap on Update All, or you can update one by one; flicking
to the right, after the app needing updates, you'll come across a button
saying "Update, allowing you to update an app at a time. Good luck!

free, was: Talking clock for on the hour announcement.

Hi Michael and List:

Here is a link for the Voiceover Clock app:
https://itunes.apple.com/ca/app/voice-over-clock/id594106139?mt=8

If you or anybody else is wondering about whether an app is free or paid
consider looking it up in a simple way, takes you no more time than to write an
email to the list asking and of course since then you have to wait for somebody
else to look it up or reply because maybe they know the price, it's actually a
lot faster. I do this simply by opening Google, go to the search field and type
in the app name followed by "on the app store" or "on iTunes". In this case I
would write "Voiceover clock on the app store". In 9 out of 10 cases the first
search result will be a direct link to the app I am looking for on the iTunes
app store, I press enter on that and then use headings to find the information,
read the description or look for the price.

If you want to set up a quick method to look up the price and are using Jaws
and Internet Explorer or Firefox, you can do the following:
Bring up virtual find with Jaws Key+Control+F and type "Category" in the search
field, then press enter.
This will take you to the app category, e.g. with Voiceover clock it would say
"Category: Lifestyle where "Lifestyle" is a link. If you were, for example,
doing the search in Google "KNFB Reader on iTunes" and did the category search
it would say "Category: Productivity".

The nice thing with this is that the price is always listed right above the
category, so if you find the category and arrow up once you will either hear
"Free" as in the case of Voiceover Clock or, in the case of KNFB Reader you
would hear $139.99 (I am in Canada and that is the price in canadian dollars.
You can take this even a step further and set up a Jaws placemarker when you
are on the Category and that way any time you do a Google search for an app and
then follow the link to the app store you just type the quick nav key "K" for
placemarker and it jumps straight to the category, arrow up once and you have
the price. To do this, follow these steps:

1. Find the category, for example, go to where it says "Category: Lifestyle"
when you are on the Voiceover Clock page.
2. Press Control+Shift+K to bring up the placemarker dialogue, then press Alt+A
to add a placemarker 3. It will say "Category: Lifestyle" in the placemarker
name, just edit this to only say "Cateegory".
4. Tab once and check the checkbox "Define for all pages on current domain"
5. Tab one more time and check the checkbox "Anchor to text"
6. Tab one more time and in the anchor to text edit box again change the text
from "Category: Lifestyle" simply to the word "Category".
7. Tab to OK and activate it with spacebar or enter.

Now go back to Google and try another search like "KNFB Reader on iTunes" or
"Downcast on iTunes".
Use the quick nav key "2" for heading level 2 which takes you to the heading
"Search Results", then "3" which takes you straight to the first search result
which is "knfbReader on the App Store - iTunes - Apple". Press enter on it.
After the page loads just press the quick nav key "K", Jaws should now say
"Category: Productivity", arrow up once for the price and that's it. I just
timed myself doing a search starting from right here as I am writing this post.
I used my Windows Key+1 shortcut which loads Internet Explorer, then I typed in
"Tap Tap See on iTunes" and pressed enter, then I did the "2" and "3", pressed
enter on the search result and after the page loaded I pressed "K" and arrowed
up once to hear "Free". All of this took about 10 seconds.

Keep in mind that this will not work on an iPhone if you want to look up an app
you have already installed.
Whether you use Safari or the Google app to search, once you find the link to
an app you already have on your phone it will actually open the App Store app
with the app loaded. You will have an "Open" button instead of the "Get" button
which you would have if an app is free or the button showing the price if it is
paid. Of course if you have never bought/downloaded the app this would still
work although it's much faster to do this on a computer with Jaws. I assume
NVDA may have similar quick nav keys you can use and maybe the Mac does as
well, but I'm not sure if NVDA or the Mac has the ability to set a placemarker
or to do a virtual find for "Category".

Sieghard

Hello folks. I don't post much on this list. But I aggree with Stacy.
This app is not as accessable as the other versons of Messenger. It
works ok. But not that great. For example, I was trying to messege a
friend who I haven't writen to in a while. I kept flicking to the
right on the screen. It kept getting me gack to the begining of the
people I messaged. In fact, I belive once I flicked on to the last
person who I messaged. The app braught me back to the top. what I had
to do is go to the tabs at the bottem. Then I had to flick to the left
and I was able to find others I have messaged in recent times. it does
work with Voice-over. But not like it has in the past.

Understanding iCloud

2017-01-20 Thread Kimberly Samco
Hello all,

Until recently I haven't paid a ton of attention to iCloud but lately I have
collected many pics and videos and kept a travel journal which I made sure to
save to the cloud and are also in Drop Box. Fr me, Drop Box is a little
cumbersome to use and many files in Drop Box seem to be stuck and have told me
"waiting to upload" for days. Is it possible to explore what I have in the
cloud by using my phone or do I need to do it from a "real" computer which in
my case is a PC with JAWS?

I looked in the App Store to see what is there which lead me to wonder if
getting another app is necessary or can I do what I want, just as easily by
using the native apps?

I know my questions are not very specific but I'm still in the process of
figuring out what I want/need and what is available. I guess the bottom line
is that I want to make sure to not lose any photos and journal entries (which I
created in the Notes app) and I would like to organize them.

Thanks for any info,

Kim

Please do, it's right at the bottom of the screen. You may need to do a four

Hi Davy,

you be more specific wit some examples where you have problems or where things

If I use this to change back to the regular
keyboard the top left item now says “Text” and if I double tap it it goes back
to “Emoji, selected” but the keyboard stays on text until I tap this again.
Like I said, this is just a bit inconsistent, but everything else for me seems
to be perfectly accessible.
If I want to send a voice recording instead of a text message I can tap on
“Voice” and the entire button part of the screen above the home button but all
the way across becomes a big “Record” button. You have to double tap and hold
this just as in Whats App messenger and after you let go anything you record is
automatically sent.
Tap on “Text” at the far left of that row of icons to get out of voice
recording mode and bring the on-screen keyboard back.

 announced The Holman
Prize
for Blind Ambition – an annual set of awards up to $25,000 to fund the dreams
and ambitions of blind individuals worldwide.

Open to anyone in the world who is 18 or older and can provide official proof
of blindness, the Holman Prize funds travel, activism, scholarship, craft,
sport, art, nature and much more — you are encouraged to think outside the box.
They’re looking for intrepid travelers, creative problem solvers, effective
communicators, natural ambassadors, passionate advocates, joyful builders,
active boundary-pushers and experience seekers.

If you’re a blind person with a penchant for exploration, The Holman Prize is
your chance to shape your own future instead of having it laid out for you.

Hi Ioana

Thanx to inform me that I am not alone.
I had made an mp3 record for a very clever visually impaired iphone user and
she told me the app did not have a problem at all and even she had to admit my
message buttons were nolonger labeled.
Which iphone do you use?

I have had a similar problem for a few versions now but it appears that it's
not present for all voiceover users.
Thanks to Help I received on the list I learned how to find the send button and
that suits my needs for now. I did send them a report also bought we will see
what happens.

Best,

I noticed that the third of out the 5 tabs at the bottom is not labelled,
for me it says from left to right:

Home, Calls, Tab 3 of 5, Groups, People

When I double tap on where Voiceover says “Tab 3 of 5” Voiceover says “Tap
to take photo or video” and I get a screen with a Close button at the top left,
then a button to turn the flash on, a button to “Flip Camera” which is followed
by Voiceover saying “Backfacing Camera” and then I have buttons labelled
“Stickers”, “Draw”, “Text” and a “Previous” and “Next” button.

If I go to the “Home” tab I see all my conversations, I have a “Settings”
button at the top left, a search field in the middle and a “New Conversation”
button at the top right.

My conversations are announced as to whether they are “Unread” if they are
new and Voiceover says “Actions available” which tells me there are rotor
options which are Activate (default), Mute, Delete and More.

More gives me a pop-up menu with Block, Mark as Spam, Archive, Mark as
Unread (or mark as read if it’s unread) and Cancel.

If I double tap to open a conversation I get a “Home, back” button at the
top left, the name of the person in the middle followed by when they were last
active and at the top right are “Audio Call” and “Video Call”.

I am just looking at a message where somebody just sent me a single
message, it is read out perfectly with time and all and if I swipe right
Voiceover says “Type in message… text field is editing”.

Underneath this is a row of items I can find by touching/dragging my finger
or I can swipe right and all are announced:

Emoji, Camera, Photos, Stickers, Gifs, Voice, Games, More and Like.

As soon as I start typing something th “Like” button at the far right
changes to a “Send” button.

The only oddity is that the far left item, Emoji, says “Selected” even
though the regular keyboard is up. If I double tap on it the Emoji keyboard
shows and the icon now says “Text, selected” and I can double tap on that to go
back to the regular keyboard or there is also a “Toggle Text input” button at
the very bottom left of the Emoji keyboard. If I use this to change back to the
regular keyboard the top left item now says “Text” and if I double tap it it
goes back to “Emoji, selected” but the keyboard stays on text until I tap this
again. Like I said, this is just a bit inconsistent, but everything else for me
seems to be perfectly accessible.

If I want to send a voice recording instead of a text message I can tap on
“Voice” and the entire button part of the screen above the home button but all
the way across becomes a big “Record” button. You have to double tap and hold
this just as in Whats App messenger and after you let go anything you record is
automatically sent.

Tap on “Text” at the far left of that row of icons to get out of voice
recording mode and bring the on-screen keyboard back.

the buttons within an open message are nolonger labeled with my iphone 5s.

That send button is not labeled. I got a very strange message within the body
of the message saying in Dutch but I’ll tranlate: some things have been
replaced, let me show button. Right sweeping to that I get 2 unlabeled buttons
and then the edit text field which is accessible but has the label called “A
A”.
To the right of that I again have a unlabeled button followed by the like
button.
I admit, maybe I was to harsh: even my version of messenger is still accessible
but really less then earlier versions.

I still have a v 93 in my itunes and when I downgrade, I have no problem at all
and that version is fully accessible.
In Belgium many people wrote to me that they have no problem at all just like
you but some do have the same problems as I have.

Hi Davy,

I updated to whatever the latest update was yesterday and have no issues. Can
you be more specific wit some examples where you have problems or where things
are not labelled?
If I use this to change back to the regular
keyboard the top left item now says “Text” and if I double tap it it goes back
to “Emoji, selected” but the keyboard stays on text until I tap this again.

Sieghard

Subject: do not update messenger above V100!!!

Hi folks

Since messenger 100.1 the app has become dramatically less accessible.

This is the report I sent to facebook this afternoon. So don’t update the app!

The latest update of Messenger 101.0 is very unaccessible, most buttons and
tabs are nolonger labeled. this has been the case for update 100.1 as well,
despite numerous messages sent by the blind community Facebook refused to
restore accessibility. Now this issue will be sent over by me to numerous
newspapers and all forums of the blind community saying that facebook is
reluctant to solve these accessibility issues since update 100.1.
If facebook is nolonger willing to take accessibility into consideration for
Messenger usage, please make the latest update before v100.1 back available on
the Apple appstore.
Regards
Davy

RE: WHAT DO YOU ALL THINK?

2017-01-20 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
I think people should write to Apple Accessibility and point out that the rotor
can be too cluttered to be efficient and Apple should maybe come up with a
better way to do certain things especially frequent things like changing from
character to word or line or to select things like headings, form controls,
tables, lists, links etc. on web pages. I don't think we need to give
suggestions, after all that why Apple has smart people in their teams, they can
come up with better ways to do stuff just like they came up with a better and
easier way to move apps. Just tell them to not stop and leave things at where
they are but to continue to innovate and make things better and also to maybe
offer choices on how to accomplish things because while the rotor works for me
it may not for somebody else who has issues with making certain movements.
Wrist strain doesn't even come into play for me because I don't use my wrist to
make the rotor gesture, it doesn't have to be so pronounced, just moving two
fingers in opposite directions works fine. On the other hand I have hand
injuries from my accident which also caused my blindness and in my case this
means I only have 3 fingers on each hand (index and middle fingers are missing)
so a 4-finger tap for me means I have to put the phone down and use both hands
to do it, not very efficient and I wish there were an easier way to move to the
end of a page.

Sieghard

I don't find the angle gestures in Talk Back to be impossible to use. I don't
recall a time when I struggled with them. I know some complain about them, but
some iPhone users complain about the roter as well.

I personally prefer the Talk Back approach. The things I access the most in the
roter are the granularity settings, e.g. character, word, line, and in Talk
Back, I can change these with a flick up or down. If I want to get to more
options, I can bring up a context menu and then just access them out of a list,
as Mary describes.

IMHO, the roter is overused in VoiceOver. Of course, I just may have too many
items in it. The fact that VoiceOver may put me somewhere else in the roter, is
nice when VoiceOver guesses right, but it can be a pain when it guesses wrong,
and I've got to twist my way back to the settings I want to change.

I agree that the Talk Back gesture set is too limited. Hopefully the Talk Back
and Android developers are listening to us and will open it up some in the near
future.

How to quickly look up an app including it's price or whether it's free, was: Talking clock for on the hour announcement.

2017-01-20 Thread Sieghard Weitzel

2. Press Control+Shift+K to bring up the placemarker dialogue, then press Alt+A
to add a placemarker
3. It will say "Category: Lifestyle" in the placemarker name, just edit this to
only say "Cateegory".

Sieghard

Re: WHAT DO YOU ALL THINK?

2017-01-20 Thread Marie
Oh I agree, the right angle gestures are terrible. But I was able to
reassign the left/right swipe for the global menu and the right/left swipe
for the local. I found these easy to perform and to remember. Once the menu
is up there are some great links like going directly to your talk back
setting, etc. I don't have any major issue with the rotor but there are
times when it seems I have to go around it twice to find what I want.
Fortunately I don't have the mobility problems that some have so it is not a
big deal.

The fly in the ointment with the talkback approach is that they have very
few gestures, and many of those they do have are the right angle gestures
which cause a lot of people a lot of problems. It is true that you can
change the jesters, which is nice. But if you are one of those who has
difficulty either performing or remembering those gestures, and which one
goes with what action, it really doesn't do you much good to have all that
customizability. I don't personally have a problem with the rotor, although
I do wish it were shorter. I am careful about what I leave in there. But
depending on where I am and where I need to go, it's quite a few turns or
twists away.

I do think it would be a good idea if the top level menu which is accessed
via the rotor could be made shorter. I think they did a good job with the
language rotor, pick the language setting and then flick up and down to
select your language. Maybe they could do something like that splitting up
web elements and document navigation type elements, such as word line and
character. Of course, it can be argued that that is an artificial
separation, because you do often want to navigate by words on the web or,
in a document, maybe by headings. But nothing is perfect, and I do think
fewer twists of the rotor and Moore up and down flicks could be used.

I am wondering if this rotor needs to be re-constructed, perhaps having

Sandy,

I had forgotten that you were doing everything on an iPhone when I replied
last. I'm sure that's what's causing you your download problem. I don't believe
iOS allows a direct download to your device unless you go through a cloud
service like Dropbox and I'm not sure how to do that in this case.

do not update messenger above V100!!!

2017-01-20 Thread Davy Cuppens

2017-01-20 Thread Christopher Chaltain
One person having a problem with a gesture or even multiple people
complaining about it doesn't mean it's almost impossible to use. That
would be like me going on an Android list and saying that the roter or
scrub gestures in VoiceOver are almost impossible to use. I don't have
trouble with either gesture, but there are certainly those on this list
who do. The gesture I have the most problem with is the four finger tap
at the bottom of the screen to get to the end of a page, but I've never
said that it's almost impossible to jump to the end of a page in
VoiceOver. The most I'd ever say is that it's a gesture I have problems
with. I just think we do each other a disservice when we use hyperbole
and end up mis characterizing another option that might appeal to
someone else.

judging from the amount of complaints I've heard, I am surely not alone.

Hopefully the Talk Back
and Android developers are listening to us and will open it up some in the near
future.

The fly in the ointment with the talkback approach is that they have very few

cause a lot of people a lot of problems. It is true that you can change the
jesters, which is nice. But if you are one of those who has difficulty either
performing or remembering those gestures, and which one goes with what action,
it really doesn't do you much good to have all that customizability. I don't
personally have a problem with the rotor, although I do wish it were shorter. I
am careful about what I leave in there. But depending on where I am and where I
need to go, it's quite a few turns or twists away.

This is one of the few places where I think that Talk Back on the Android is
doing a better job. Instead of the rotor there is the Global context menu or
the Local context menu. Talk Back will now let you change the gesture to invoke
either of these menus and once there, you use the normal swiping that we are
all accustomed to. I got to try this out with a newer version of Talk Back and
was quite impressed. In the past the gesture to invoke these menus was all but
impossible to use.

I do think it would be a good idea if the top level menu which is accessed via
the rotor could be made shorter. I think they did a good job with the language
rotor, pick the language setting and then flick up and down to select your
language. Maybe they could do something like that splitting up web elements and
document navigation type elements, such as word line and character. Of course,
it can be argued that that is an artificial separation, because you do often
want to navigate by words on the web or, in a document, maybe by headings. But
nothing is perfect, and I do think fewer twists of the rotor and Moore up and
down flicks could be used.

2017-01-20 Thread 'Sandratomkins' via VIPhone
hi,
When I use BDR, I never use the play function, I only ever use voice-over to
read. if you do this, using all the usual gestures, you can navigate line by
line et cetera and find your word and read it character by character.

hope this helps, Sandy

Re: convert youtube to music files

2017-01-20 Thread 'Sandratomkins' via VIPhone
hi,
I am wondering then, might this be a mobile platform problem? I'm doing
everything only on my iPhone. as I said, I have successfully downloaded shorter
programs. we have a rather slow Internet connection here, but it does work, I
can watch YouTube files, for example, but with this sat this seems to be some
kind of links or timeout issue.
Thanks for all the help though, Sandy
