Re: [vox-tech] Locking a console?
Thanks, Pete. vlock isn't available on the server I'm on. I tried compiling it separately but it doesn't work (it says to enter password but it's in an infinite loop, as though I ran vlock and held down the enter button, and without the delay that occurs under normal circumstances.) Apparently the PAM library isn't working well on this server, perhaps on purpose so people don't stay logged on. Thanks, anyway! :) -Mark -- Mark K. Re: [vox-tech] Peters Kernal Update and a Few Questions
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE- Hash: SHA1 I am having some trouble with my internet connection at home. I called for support and waited on hold for about 25 minutes (no joke I timed it). When I got hold of ATT they asked what Operating system I had and as soon as I said Linux they took this whole we can't help you with anything attitude. They also said I should be using DHCP. So I tried to set it up to use DHCP and it would not work. I get connected using the static IP, but I am not able to get my usual connection speed. My connection speeds have been really crappy for about 3 weeks. I have a static IP and have checked it out as far as settings and it looks good. I thought it maybe be my cat5 cable so I replaced it and it made little difference. At work I use Windows NT with HP OpenView to trouble shoot our network connections. Is there anything like it I can use with Linux? Just tell them you're running windows, wwrite down all the info, and post it here, and i'm sure someone will be able to help you. - -- PGP Public key at http://mother.com/~ryan/ryan_at_mother_dot_com.asc It is also on the servers: Key ID 0x72177BC7 -BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE- Version: GnuPG v1.0.6 (GNU/Linux) Comment: For info see http://www.gnupg.org iD8DBQE8CW73Ed9E83IXe8cRArlSAJwL58WyMrQbIN/ly5TOBoiHmWTkQACfbSF4 AIyICvHEwJzvGdPpbpvenmc= =8rGr -END PGP SIGNATURE- ___ vox-tech mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://lists.lugod.org/mailman/listinfo/vox-tech
[vox-tech] epson printer issues
I am a newbie and am having trouble printing to my epson stylus color 400 printer from staroffice 5.2. I can print from any other application, but when printing from StarOffice, the printer just spits out blank pages. I am using Mandrake 8.1 w/ KDE 2. I recently changed to Mandrake from Caldera's eDesktop 2.4 and StarOffice printed fine then. I dont remember what version of StarOffice (5.1 I think) that was though. Has anybody else had a problem like this? Is there a file with error messages that I should check? ___ vox-tech mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://lists.lugod.org/mailman/listinfo/vox-tech
Re: [vox-tech] epson printer issues
I figured out what was wrong. In soffice, my printer was set to print at 300dpi, but in Kups, it was set to print at 360dpi. When i set soffice to 360, it worked fine. thanks! On Saturday 01 December 2001 16:41, you wrote: first, let me begin by saying this email won't give you an answer. :( if everything prints AOK except star office, then your printer is configured correctly as far as linux is concerned. plus, it means your printing system (spooler daemon) is also set up correctly. if you print blank pages from star office, then star office is queuing the jobs correctly. this narrows down the problem considerably. it's been a long time since i used that monstrosity called star office, but is there a printer setup? maybe soffice is doing something really goofy like print postscript to a non-postscript printer. do you get blank pages with ALL components of SO? the wp, the spreadsheet and the printing thingee? pete begin: Kai Harris [EMAIL PROTECTED] quote I am a newbie and am having trouble printing to my epson stylus color 400 printer from staroffice 5.2. What do you recommend for Linux? Are you using Latex? Bob i'd say that i'm pretty much an advanced latex user, but unfortunately, latex is overkill for short notes and general word processing. i always use it for scholarly papers and articles (i've started using docbook too), but not for general life type stuff. and i can't figure out how to use lyx. it's like glade. i can program gtk+. not the best gtk hacker, but i can do it. i have yet to figure out how glad works. gabe swears up and down it's easy anyway, lyx is beyond my capability to learn. i use abiword for a number of reasons: 1. on principle. joe arruda and i have had arguments about how good it was for the open source community that sun bought SO. i argued it was a terrible thing. the licensing of 6.0 seems to have proven me at least partially correct. we'll see what the licensing looks like when it goes out of beta. abiword is GPL. :-) 2. why not KDE or GNOME specific wps? i don't use KDE or GNOME. i don't even want the libraries on my system. i'd rather use the space for something more important. like mp3's. :)however, since you use KDE, this might be the best option for you. 3. why not something else? abiword has become pretty damned stable in the past 6 months. half a year ago, it was constantly segfaulting on me. everything was buggy. they made great strides in a short amount of time. it's still a *little* buggy. like when you spell check, it sometimes doesn't ignore words that you tell it to. but it's not buggy in any of the ways that i care about. if it improves at the same rate it's been improving, i'll be a very satisfied customer. 4. why not something else? i REALLY REALLY like the fact that abiword can save stuff in XML format. even though i don't know XML, IN PRINCIPLE, i can pick up a book and learn it. so if every copy of abiword disappeared off the face of the planet i can still edit and print my files. or else give them to henry and beg him to do it. ;-) 5. nice interface, powerful, has all the features i'll ever need, doesn't take a year to start up, yadda yadda yadda. if i want something to look spectacular, i'll always use straight latex. if i want something to look pretty, i'll use docbook. for everything else, there's normal word processing. and abiword is what i'm happiest with. one nice thing about open source though. if i ever do decide to become a KDE or GNOME user, i'm sure i can always export abiword docs to something else. pete -- PGP Fingerprint: B9F1 6CF3 47C4 7CD8 D33E 70A9 A3B9 1945 67EA 951D PGP Public Key: finger [EMAIL PROTECTED] ___ vox-tech mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://lists.lugod.org/mailman/listinfo/vox-tech
