Hi all,

Just testing to see if I am actually subscribed to the list, if I can
get mail to it, and/or if it's still alive.

Haven't received anything from the list for quite a while!

If this actually does get through, then hope everyone's well!

I got married, then moved to Kent, started a new job and we've just
had it confirmed that my wife is pregnant, that's why I've been so
quiet, no time to do anything! :D

Hope everyone's well,

Cheers,

[wdvltalk] Client request!!!!!

2006-07-06 Thread Portman

Hi all,

I have a client that I am really regretting taking on. One of the
reasons is that it is a small organization and the guy who I first spoke
to said that he was getting too busy and from now on I would work with
guy2. Guy2 then said that he was too busy and I would now work with
guy3. Guy3 is also now too busy and I am working with the first guy again.

The problem is that each person has their own idea about what looks good
and what doesn't. They finally agreed that they all want a picture of
the lake in the background and one or two other things. My latest
request is that the menu on the side not be in a box. Because the
background is a lake picture with trees and sky, part of the menu is in
the sky and the other part is over the trees. How do I make a menu that
isn't in a box that will appear on both sky and trees and doesn't look
awful?? Any ideas would be much appreciated.

TIA,
Riva

Hi Riva,

Well, first of all I don't know if you realize this but the entire
background is tiling so on my screen I have several backgrounds side
by side and on top of one another which is something I would
address. As for the menu, what about removing the box and just use
links? Or, you could do a horizontal menu so the box isn't just
floating there, but instead is at the top of the page?

Hi, Honestly, the first viewing of the page made me feel it's a joke; it's
not just the small issue of the menu (you can always make the box without
outline and with transparent background). It's the big problem of the whole
page design. And I don't think anyone here would not say so. Good luck

I know! The old design was awful and they seem to be steering this
design back to the old design. I don't know if I will even include this
site in my portfolio . . .

I find that without a colored background, the menu items are not legible.

Re: [wdvltalk] Client request!!!!!

2006-07-06 Thread Portman

Hi Deb,

Yes. I have fixed that but have not uploaded the new stylesheet yet.
Thanks for pointing it out.

I had a horizontal menu and they nixed (sp?) it and wanted a menu on the
side. I have half a mind to tell them to find someone else to do this.

Hi Riva,

Well, first of all I don't know if you realize this but the entire
background is tiling so on my screen I have several backgrounds side
by side and on top of one another which is something I would address.
As for the menu, what about removing the box and just use links? Or,
you could do a horizontal menu so the box isn't just floating there,
but instead is at the top of the page?

What do you think would make the site look more professional? It looks
as though I am stuck with that darn picture in the background . . .

If I were you I'd politely decline to continue the project on teh grounds
that it is incresing difficult and costly for you to operate with such
internal conflict on what this project is supposed to entail. Their
decision-making process is beyond your scope as a developer and until such
time they can approach you with a fixed and definitive brief then it is
achieveing nothing except waste your time and money, a cost of which,
naturally, you have no choice but to pass on to them.

Furthermore the design choices being made, irrespective of your PROFESSIONAL
advice, will ultimately serve only to destroy any professional image and
credibility this company may have already. As a developer you must deliver
what the client wants. Should that client make choices that will be of a
determent to them, you take pride in your work and have a professional and
personal responsibility to inform them of these facts and provide your
expertise. At the end of the day, if the client knew what they were doing
they wouldn't have hired you.

So put the ball back into their court: either recoup the wasted time and
inform them that you will continue to do so while they in-fight, stand your
ground and let them they're going to make themselves look ridiculous if they
continue down this route, or pull the plug on the grounds of professional
disagreement.

Unless they're willing to keep paying you for the time and energy they're
wasting here, this job and this client are not worth the headaches and
associating yourself with what will end up as a 1998 high school Frontpage
job.

[wdvltalk] Opinion on website

2006-07-06 Thread Portman

Hi all,

I was wondering if this looks any better?
http://www.starqualitydesigns.com/Moodus/index.htm Also, I notice that
in IE, the background doesn't stay fixed and when you scroll down, the
blue appears. It works in FF. Any help would be much appreciated.

TIA,
Riva

If you have to use the photo one possibility is making it smaller,
add an oval shape around it of a solid coordinating color. Put the
nav on the left right aligned to go around the left side of the oval
and then center it in the site page. You could also try a gradient
fade of the photo.

That's a great idea Deb. Where would the text go though?

Well, if you make the photo considerably smaller (like about half
it's current size) then you'd have room for text next to it or you
could put the text under it depending upon how much text there
is. That was just one idea, too Riva. A quickie that crossed my
mind in a flash. This photo is also pretty blurry and I think a
clear, crisp photo is in order. One thing I forgot to mention would
be to mute the photo edges so it blends rather than leaving it as a
stark photo - something to make it not just look like a photo slapped
into a page. What's there *can* be made to look much more
professional if they'll give you some rope to work with, LOL! instead
of hanging you with it.

This site definitely needs a professional touch and if these people
aren't going to listen to you my suggestion is if you continue to do
the work that you not put it in your portfolio nor put your link to
it on the bottom - at least not as the designer. If they want the
site to look unprofessional that's their business, if you want to
continue the work that's your business but YOUR BUSINESS doesn't have
to suffer because of it. Make sense?

Suggestion then would be to take a break from it. That's what I do
