And JMHO there is finally a core of Free videos that should get anyone started.

But I can say, that without them, I would have given up a long time ago. I
still go back and re-watch them and realize that some problem I had was because
I missed some very little comment from the presenter.

Jesse,
I am certain that no one, you included, would give out your code for free in
the interest of growing your business. If that were true, I am sure this
community and others would follow in those footsteps. I have full confidence in
the community leaders that they know what they are doing. They distribute what
they can for free, but there has to be a limit in order to cover basic overhead.

Re: All WOWODC 2012 recordings now available

2013-05-02 Thread David LeBer
It's a tough decision.

Running the community is not free, there are cost involved and the only revenue
we have it the memberships. Early access to the videos is a significant
incentive to purchasing them.

The pessimist in me says that the ship has sailed on enlarging the community to
any great degree. Certainly not to the point where risking the benefits that
the WOCommunity org brings by sabotaging it's revenue stream makes any kind of
sense.

Some videos are always released immediately after WOWODC for free, and
community members are always welcome to create their own and post them anytime
they want.

The current rules still make sense to me.

And the hosting of WOCommunity.org and other things will magically be paid by
magic? I had stopped working for ONE MONTH last year to work on my WOWODC
presentations (and the organization, and editing the recordings) last year and
I would have to pay for the WOCommunity hosting out of my pocket so that people
who wants access to the content don't pay 50$ a year? Sorry, but no.

since I'm not in charge of the community, this is of course, just my casual

they should be published right away so people can use them.

Slides from WOWODC 2012

2012-07-07 Thread Pascal Robert
Hello everyone,

The slides from WOWODC 2012 have been uploaded on SlideShare
(http://www.slideshare.net/wocommunity/) and in the podcasts feed on
WOCommunity.org (and iTunes).

So far, most recordings seems to be ok, so they will be available to paid
members when my poor Early 2008 MacBook Pro will be done exporting them and
basic editing is complete.

Thanks to everyone who attended WOWODC…

FYI, I just saw that I wrote the wrong room block code on the WOWOC site. The

And related to that, we still have rooms in the block, but you have to register

Hello everyone,

I'm please to inform the community that you can now register for WOWODC 2012

we will announce a couple more in the next 3 weeks.

You can get all the details about tickets, content and everything else at the

  http://www.wowodc.com

Thanks to Box Office Tickets for hosting the registration system again this

you will have to contact me at i...@wocommunity.org to get the discount code. I
will try to automate this when I have the time, but for at least the next two
weeks, you will have to ask for it.

I hope to see YOU at WOWODC!

Re: Using Git WOWODC 2012 Session

2012-04-06 Thread Daniel Beatty
Greetings Kieran,
Well this Gitolite sounds like an excellent tool. Although, there are
employers that have paranoia for a good reason. Some have been burned, others
are paid to have this paranoia, and others just simply work some national
government. Whatever the excuse is, there seems to be cause for companies and
countries to seriously look into how to manage GIT repositories for their
benefits and advantages over other repositories, especially when the advantage
applies. I can't speak for my own government/ employer on this, but there does
seem to be a case here.

Gitolite makes it easy to administer many repositories with less effort that
just basic setup for a single repo. Also allows a basic level of control over
what users can and cannot do on specific repositories.

Gitolite users are "virtual" users and virtual permissions, so no need to give
them SSH access to the box.

WOWODC 2012 tickets

2012-04-05 Thread Pascal Robert
Since I had people asking me about tickets sale, they will go on sale next
week. Please note that the Web site said (until yesterday) that it was $480 in
Canadian dollars, but we will have to use a bank account in US dollars, so we
had to change the currency to USD and the price go up by $5 for WOWODC and $10
for the boot camp.

The early bird cutoff also been extended, instead of May 1st it will be May
14th.

More details next week (and Happy Easter).

I would add:

stashes : damn useful to try options without committing it. You can stash
your tests, try something else, stash that something else, and get back to the

post commit hooks (never tried those except in a GitHub context)

That will be tagging. We started adding "release numbers", as tags, in the

I have setup my own (or I should say Pascal did) git repository on my own

Basic / typical commands for forking wonder, cloning it, contributing back. ;-)

How about the equivalent of svn:externals to integrate Wonder into our
employer's git repository... Or maybe the command for checking out a
particular version of Wonder in time for building our apps and qa against it.

For people whose employer won't put their repository in the public (i.e. github
or whatever), is there an easy way to setup a server and that is free. :-)

Re: Using Git WOWODC 2012 Session

2012-04-03 Thread Ted Archibald
Since I just switched over, I'd be curious to know which is better:
multiple large repositories with many projects (ala Wonder) or an
individual repository for each project. When I converted over from svn I
went with the former than the latter, and it seems fine.

Different workflows, what you do for your own projects, what you do with
Wonder etc. E.g. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GYnOwPl8yCE and
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m7r2X9qC8jo

Now that I'm switched over to git I'm excited about being able to go off on
wild tangents with branches then merging them back in without leaving
projects in bizzaro limbo. Any tips or tricks on this topic?

What are submodules and their use? I haven't a clue.

Perhaps an overview of some of the GUIs out there (i.e. use this, don't use
this).

And for people who don't follow wowodc on Twitter (if you are a Twitter user,
you should follow wowodc!), you can get a list of proposed presentations (well,
propositions is a big world, all propositions made so far have been approved)
here:

  http://wocommunity.org/apps/WebObjects/WOWODC.woa/ra/sessions/listPapers.html

3 presentations (Ramsey's killer topic + two other presentations) will be added
to the list by early March. With those 3 + the ones on the page, we have 16
hours of content so far! And don't forget the Project Wonder Boot Camp too.

BTW, we still have room for another 4-5 presentations.

I can only make the July dates next year - so that's my vote! I'll probably
drag along someone from work to attend as well.

They do have 10 or so rooms with two beds. It's 20$ more if you are two. You
can also go to the Auberge Carre Saint-Louis
(http://www.aubergecarrestlouis.com/), one minute walk from the ITHQ.

WOWODC 2012 hotel and pricing

2011-10-11 Thread Pascal Robert
Hi everyone,

Since the Gouverneur don't do their "Stay at the Hotel" promo anymore, and they
raised their prices again, I looked for alternatives, and I found the ITHQ
Hotel:

http://www.ithq.qc.ca/en/hotel/

The ITHQ is our culinary/tourism school (one of the best in the world), and
unknown to me, they also have a hotel (42 rooms) and conference rooms. So I
made my choice, and WOWODC 2012 will be there. Rate is $139 CAD for a regular
room (single occupancy), and they are really nice rooms. But what's the best
thing? It's right on St-Denis Street!! But I think I will notice all the pubs
to reject WOWODC people when we have the presentations to make sure that
everyone attends the presentations :-P

About the WOWODC ticket price, since the provincial sales tax is going up
(again) in January, and it look I had to charge taxes, the ticket price will be
$480 instead of $465. Group pricing will be available again this year, and
members of the Community Program will also get a discount.

So if your boss is asking you what you need for your 2012 training budget, you
have everything you need to reply to your boss :-)

WOWODC 2012 and Boot Camp official dates!

2011-09-30 Thread Pascal Robert
Good afternoon everyone,

The WOWODC 2012 dates are now official! It will be held from June 30 to July 2.
It was the preferred period for people who answered the surveys, hence the
choice.

We will also have the WO Boot Camp from June 28 to June 30. Paul Lynch of P&L
Software, one of the few guys who still do WebObjects training, will be your
teacher. The focus of the Boot Camp will be on EOF, since it's the core of WO,
without a good model and design, you can't fully use the power of ERRest and
D2W, this is why we will focus on EOF. People who attend the Boot Camp will be
able to attend the WOWODC presentations on July 1 and 2 (and get the
recordings).

We will also do something different this year. The last day of WOWODC will be
held on Notre-Dame Island, in a renovated Expo 67 building (it was the Canada
Pavilion, see http://www.parcjeandrapeau.com/88-La_Toundra_Hall-rental.html)
with pool tables on the second floor and gardens next to the building.

I don't know yet at which hotel we will do the Boot Camp and the first two days
of WOWODC, but it will probably be at the Gouverneur again. Don't worry about
Net access, I find out that we can get a dedicated and private access (my guess
that it's ADSL), so if Wifi dies like this year, we could have a backup. I will
check for other hotels anyway, but the goal is that the hotel rooms have to be
under $159.

Thanks.

WOWODC, and who wants to present. I'm also asking for 4 different dates
(multi-selection, please mark down all dates when you came come). I will make a
final decision next week about the date, based of the dates of when we have the
most potential speakers and the dates with the most interest for the boot camp.
The boot camp will only happen if we have at least 10 people. You don't have to
be 100% sure that you will attend.

Survey link:

  http://www.survs.com/survey/P3DULH5ZR6

Copy of the survey questions:

We want to do a boot camp just before WOWODC 2012. That boot camp will only
about EOF, including modeling, performance and best practices, and will include
Wonder topics (ERXKey, utilities classes, etc.).
A WOWODC ticket will be $500 (USD or CAD) and the Boot Camp + WOWODC will be
less than $1000, final price will depend on how much people will attend it.

1. Are you planning to attend or to present?
• I would like to attend the boot camp + the regular WOWODC
• I would like to attend the "regular" WOWODC
• I would like to present

2. What are your preferred date(s)?
• June 28-29-30 (Boot camp) / June 30 + July 1/2 (WOWODC)
• July 5-6-7 (Boot camp) / July 7-8-9 (WOWODC)
• August 30-31 + Sept. 1 (Boot camp) / September 1-2-3 (WOWODC)
• September 5-6-7 (Boot camp) / September 7-8-9 (WOWODC)

3. If you want to present, which topics do you want to cover? Please note that
not 100% WO topics are also accepted. For example, if you want to do a
presentation about how to tune MySQL or PostgreSQL for best EOF performance,
this is an acceptable presentation. Same thing for iOS topics.

If you want to present, but you don't know yet which topics you want to
present, just write "I don't know".

If you don't want to present, please write down which topics you would like to
learn about.

4. If you want to present, please write down your name and email so that we can
contact you.

FYI, June 27-28-29 (for the Boot Camp) and June 29-30-July 1 (for WOWODC) is
also a possibility. It's just that I'm trying to book the event at a different
hotel (ITHQ,
http://www.ithq.qc.ca/en/hotel/reunion-et-evenement/reunion-et-evenement.php)
and they don't have space for those dates, but if the June dates are what
people prefer, we can stay at the Gouverneur again.

EOF Boot Camp and WOWODC 2012

2011-09-20 Thread Pascal Robert
Ok, so some news about WOWODC 2012. Like I said before, we want to do a Boot
Camp before WOWODC. That boot camp would be all about EOF, since without a good
EOF, including modeling, you will have problems using the rest of WO,
especially for ERRest and D2W. It might also include information about what
Wonder changes and add to EOF (ERXKey, localization, auto-locking, etc.).

Before setting up everything, I need to know who wants to attend the EOF Boot
Camp. Possible dates are:

- July 5-6-7
- August 22-23-25
- August 29-30-31

Please note that the "regular" WOWODC would be 3 days, starting the last day of
the Boot Camp. So WOWODC would be one of those dates:

- July 7-8-9
- August 25-26-27
- August 31-September 1-2

People who attend the boot camp will also get access to WOWODC. The first day
of WOWODC will be for advanced sessions. So if you want to attend the boot
camp, reply to me directly and tell me which date(s) you prefer. If you would
like to present at WOWODC, reply to me with your preferred date(s) too.

WOWODC 2012

2011-08-03 Thread Pascal Robert
What? Already? Does this guy is crazy?

Anyway, just to let you know, WOWODC 2012 will probably June 29th, June 30th
and July 1st 2012, in Montreal again. So talk to your boss, your spouse and the
kids, and let them come to WOWODC in 2012!

We're thinking of doing a WO BootCamp the days before the event, if you would
like to attend the bootcamp, please drop me a note so that I can see if we get
enough interest for this.

More news in late September!
