[Bug 9738] Caching issues with inline queries

2009-12-03 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=9738

--- Comment #5 from Neill Mitchell mitchell_ne...@hotmail.com 2009-12-03
10:30:13 UTC ---
Hi.

Thanks a lot for your comments. The reason I mention SF is because I believe a
simple workaround could be placed into the SF save functionality to purge the
cache. The inline query would then pull the updated or new data. Most people
populate SMW using SF, so this seemed like an ideal solution.

Cheers
Neill.

On some over-populated properties, the page listing (showList()) on the
Property namespace can trigger huge database queries that hang the application
and DB. I've added a configuration for disabling this feature.

I would like to poke this bug into activity again and see if possible to get it
done before the end of the month.

Wikinews should be doing a WikiVoices session getting people to write on the
site; WMUK have just issued a press release recommending Wikinews as the answer
to Newspapers going behind paywalls, and we would very much like to launch a
writing competition towards the end of January.

For all of these reasons it would be extremely useful to have an auto-welcome -
either when someone registers an account on enWN, or makes their first edit
with their global account.

[Bug 21751] New: Need a way to customize default OpenID providers list

2009-12-03 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=21751

Summary: Need a way to customize default OpenID providers list
   Product: MediaWiki extensions
   Version: any
  Platform: All
OS/Version: All
Status: NEW
  Severity: enhancement
  Priority: Normal
 Component: OpenID
AssignedTo: sergey.chernys...@gmail.com
ReportedBy: br...@pobox.com

Special:OpenIDLogin has a nice set of default providers, optionally with very
attractive-looking icons for a nice layout.

I'd like to set up OpenID logins on the StatusNet wiki http://status.net/wiki/
with a handy button to authenticate against http://identi.ca/... I need to be
able to alter the set of providers to include Identi.ca and make it the
default, and possibly drop some others that are less interesting.

Unfortunately this seems very difficult to do without modifying the extension
source in several unpleasant ways:

The list of providers is built in static functions on the OpenIDProvider class,
which provide no configuration options or extension hooks -- you have to change
the source code to add or remove items.

Message keys are used to specify the login prompts, so you need to devise an
appropriate prompt string (Log in using your Identi.ca account) and add it to
the OpenID.i18n.php file -- again, changing the source code.

If you want provider icons on, you've got some more work -- you need to modify
openid.css or otherwise find a way to add CSS to specify your icon. (The
default provider icons are also into a sprite, which seems not to come with a
script to regenerate it so it would be difficult to alter the default set
during future maintenance.)

It would be nice also to be able to have the selection default to my preferred
provider instead of the generic OpenID which asks you to input a full URL.
Reordering the items in the list still leaves the plain OpenID selected by
default, and removing it leaves us with an initially non-functional form.
Initial selection seems to be spread out in several places, including but not
limited to OpenIDProvider::getButtonHTML() [which sets the initial selection
state on the icon, but doesn't set up the input form right].

A few weeks ago, Andrew added a 'Multimedia:' namespace and an associated
'Multimedia talk:' namespace on the usability wiki on my request. When on a
Multimedia:Foo page, the Discussion link to the talk page is correct; it
links to Multimedia talk:Foo.

However, when you're on Multimedia talk:Foo, it appears as a regular page in
the main namespace, with a talk page of its own. It has a Discussion link to

[Bug 21754] New: Pass the event date to the template when used in format=calendar

2009-12-03 Thread bugzilla-daemon

Created an attachment (id=6855)
 -- (https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/attachment.cgi?id=6855)
Pass current event date to template in calendar

The query returns an article which may have many instances of an assigned date
property, especially if you have used {{#set_recurring_event: . . .}}. How a
particular title is returned may vary depending on which event is being
referenced, and a query returns only the entire list of recurring events.

The attached patch would automatically pass the parameter {{{thisdate}}} to the
template to help identify the specific date of the event.

Example:

If this is the third date in a recurring series, show the text '(90 day
award)'.

This patch only passes the parameter if the template= . . . has been defined.

easier to import through Special:Import with the option Include all templates

This is likely to require the following changes:
*1. in the interwiki table for test: for iw_prefix=commons: set iw_local=1 and
iw_trans=1
*2. add the import source to the localsettings for test.wikipedia.org

[Bug 21751] Need a way to customize default OpenID providers list

2009-12-03 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=21751

--- Comment #1 from Sergey Chernyshev sergey.chernys...@gmail.com 2009-12-03
23:11:49 UTC ---
Yes, I started rudimentary steps towards being able to customize the list, but
as you noted it's far from being very simple.

Adding a provider consists of:

1 adding an icon to CSS sprite image (all icons are in skins/icons/ folder one
by one) and corresponding lines to CSS. The intended way is to add an icon to
skins/icons/ and then use sprite generator to generate a composite image as
well as CSS rules. I used http://spritegen.website-performance.org/

2 add a line to either OpenIDProvider::getLargeProviders() or
OpenIDProvider::getSmallProviders()

That should be it.

One way to move step 2 outside of code without loosing translation part is to
create a couple generic parametrized messages like:

* Log in using your $1 account - for those providers that use generic URL
* Enter your $1 username - for those providers that require username
substitution

Optimizing CSS for the buttons is possible, especially if we'll generate
button-specific piece of it inline on the page, but needs more thought put into
it.

Regarding having OpenID as default provider, I did it on purpose as picking any
other wouldn't be fair for the default extension. This should probably be easy
to fix though - just use global variable instead of 'openid' selector.

Software acting different in identical situations is always a step backwards in
usability.
There is no need to confuse people having to sign here and not having to
sign elsewhere.
Casual users will hardly remember what to do where. Massive users will be used
to adding their
signatures practically automatically. Neither of those is being helped by
differing behavior.

[Bug 21697] Avoid unnecessary lines

There are three kinds of superfluous horizontal lines which only waste space
and cause unnecessary scrolling and make keeping track of context hard.
The vertical lines are less disturbing, they hamper reading less. Only when
appearing massively, I'd rather suggest, not to have them. Imho the former
layout of the support page was better, where one could outdent according to
ones own taste. In other words, I see no need for strictly threaded
intentation,
especially, when answers are most customarily to the last contributions
anyways.

--- Comment #19 from azl...@yahoo.com 2009-12-04 07:15:25 UTC ---
(In reply to comment #15)
 (In reply to comment #14)
  (In reply to comment #3)
It appears that the check, as currently coded, will have
a false positive rate of slightly over 1 in 4096 files,
assuming a random distribution of octets

16 bits, not 12, and you have to multiply by 1024, which gives us a false
positive rate for random files on the order of 2^-6 ~= 1.7 %.

The check which Simetrical removed in r58682 matched if the first 1024 bytes
 of
the file contained ? followed by one of four possible bytes (' ', '\n',
 '\t'
or '='). Thus, the probability of three random bytes matching this check is
4/(2^8)^3 = 1/2^22, and the probability of 1024 random bytes matching it is
 approximately 1024/2^22 = 1/2^12 = 1/4096.

(Taking into account the possibility of multiple matches and the fact that the
last 2 out of 1024 positions can't match makes the probability about
 1/4104.5.
Most of the difference is due to the latter, since multiple matches are very
unlikely events, occurring only for about one in every 2^24 files.)

Anyway, marking the bug as fixed: r58682 should reduce the false positive rate
enough that what's left (like removing the check entirely?) is mainly just
 code
 cleanup.

I've reopened the bug since the previous bug fix did not solve the problem
completely.
I encountered this bug again when I was uploading 1,000 PNG files.

Perhaps we should consider removing the check?
