[Bug 24183] New: Tall characters sometimes get cut off in the sidebar

2010-06-30 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=24183

Summary: Tall characters sometimes get cut off in the sidebar
   Product: MediaWiki
   Version: 1.17-svn
  Platform: All
   URL: http://tinyurl.com/2cnvrqj
OS/Version: All
Status: NEW
  Severity: minor
  Priority: Normal
 Component: Vector Skin
AssignedTo: tpars...@wikimedia.org
ReportedBy: m...@patrick-nagel.net

When I have a German capital umlaut (for example Ü) in the Sidebar, the dots
get cut off, thus making it look like I had typed U. This does not happen with
Arial set as the default sans-serif font in Firefox, but it happens with
Liberation Sans [1] and DejaVu Sans, for example.

See URL field for an example installation (the first word under Navigation
should be Überwachungskameras, but it looks like Uberwachungskameras).

Another issue: I haven't tried, but after reading MSDN I think that
Article::incViewCount() wil not work on MSSQL, so this should be also

[Bug 24184] New: Simple search: Incorrect highlighting when using shortcuts

Simple search highlights as many characters as you have already typed, but this
causes an incorrect highlighting when you use shortcuts (like WP: for
Wikipedia:). For example, if you type WP:A, Wikipedia:Article development
is shown with highlighted Wiki. Instead Wikipedia:A should be highlighted.

This touches on the general problem when the results don't match the prefix
you've typed. We should come up with a different way of highlighting stuff in
this case, or not highlight it at all.

This causes bug 24181 among other things. While that can be fixed in the client
code, it shouldn't be very hard to support special pages at least for existence
checks. We would need to be careful to ensure that special pages aren't
accidentally fed to modules that can't handle them or where they don't make
sense.

No, not really. This is just about creating a Title object for Special: pages

The speed of pretty much everything on Wikimedia sites peaked in early 2007 and
has been getting gradually slower since then. (Much to my frustration -- I get
endless complaints about how this version of Huggle is so much slower than the
last one when I didn't even change any relevant code).

20 seconds is not only longer than the average user is prepared to wait for a
response to a Web request, it's longer than they *can* wait if this stupid
moderation system is to actually work.

Yeah, although that deals with user titles mostly. 'Normal' titles aren't
validated in the parameter handling code ATM, each module validates them
themselves and has different requirements (title must exist for move but not
for edit, etc.). We could centralize this in the spirit of bug 21991, but that
doesn't really overlap much with this bug, which is about getting some non-zero
support for special pages in ApiPageSet.

For reference, in 2007 a revert cycle usually took about 500 milliseconds
(pretty much instant to a human). Obviously this wasn't helped by you guys
relocating several thousand miles further away from me, but that does not
account for the 5-10 seconds it now takes without the moderation system and ~30
seconds with it.

It's not like this is limited to diffs, either. If I'm logged in, it takes the
best part of 30 seconds just to *view* moderately long articles like [[Barack
Obama]]. (And 2 seconds when logged out, so the fault is at your end).

The mobile Wikipedia page disallow using the zoom controls on the T-Mobile G1
Android browser (and probably most other mobile WebKit implementations).

The HTML contains the following line:

meta name = viewport content = width=device-width; initial-scale=1.0;
maximum-scale=1.0; user-scalable=0; /

thus preventing the user from zooming in and out. As the default font size is
too small to be properly readable on the G1, the only workaround is to use the
non-mobile page, which renders very slowly and causes higher traffic costs.

Please remove the user-scalable attribute or set it to 1 instead, to make the
mobile Wikipedia accessible for visually impaired people.

If you enter a word containing letters with e.g. French accent aigus into
French Wictionnaire Search field, for example French word 'répétition' (see
attachment) all hits, shown in the opening drop down (I could not snap it on
the image), do not contain the correct diacritic characters e.g 'repetition'
though the corresponding wikis do contain them.

This is misleading because you think to have spelled the word wrongly.

The signature button in the Hungarian version of the new edit toolbar should
produce the text – instead of --. (That is, an em-dash+space,
preferably a non-breaking space, instead of two en-dashes preceding the actual
signature.)

More generally, the signature string or at least its prefix should be available
for localisation.

A workaround is being built for the huwiki common.js, but it is more about the

(Hungarian makes an orthographic distinction between the em- and en-dashes and
for signature purposes the longer em-dash is preferred.)

I suspect this is not about Hungarian as a language but about huwiki
specifically? In that case, it should be changed in [[MediaWiki:Common.js]]

Different cultures have different practices of dash usage. For example, while
the substitution of em-dash with two en-dashes looks tolerable for an English
speaker, this is pretty uncommon in Russian practice, consequentially it looks
strange. Spacing is also different.

So yes, localizing this would be highly appropriate.

[Bug 24073] cannot upload ms word 2007 files

gifar cleanup

A patch of what I am proposing:

1: Move zip and virus checks before mime checks
2: ZIP gifar check is now separate from mime checks
3: Added $wgAllowGIFARVulnerableFiles global variable
4: Add zip mime detection support for openxml trailers on 2003 Office files.

This will allow people to either choose to basically allow zip files uploads
when they want. They would still need to whitelist filetypes, and in the case
of actual zip files, they have to change the mime blacklist. But when setting
$wgAllowGIFARVulnerableFiles=true and adding .doc .docx .odt to their
whitelist, they will be able to upload such files none the less (and actual
GIFAR files).

We could consider expanding on this to add a best-effort mode to
detectGIFAR(), where it will only allow opendocument/openxml files, and
disallow the rest, though that is somewhat of a fake security model in my
opinion.

The new edit toolbar isn't displayed. Changing the edit toolbar preferences
doesn't help. Instead, the old toolbar is displayed (and works).

It happens in IE8.0.6001.18882 on Vista. It doesn't happen on FF3.5.6 on same
computer (works fine).

Roan says:
This is because IE8 goes into compatibility mode on Wikipedia, causing it to
act like IE7. IE7 has certain RTL-related bugs that mess up the toolbar, so it
disables itself.

Thanks

One of the most common uses of [[Special:AllMessages]] is to identify a
specific interface message that one wishes to review or edit.

The interface contains thousands of messages, often quite hgard to find. No
canonical name structure exists and if one did then even so few people except
MW coders would know it - it's not that often most users want to review or
modify an interface message.

Request is that [[Special:AllMessages]] is enhanced to have a text filter,
which brings up all messages having that text in either the default or current
message.

Thanks.

The algorithm used for calculating some statistics seems to be giving incorrect
(and very lengthy) times.

Wikitech-l discussion apparently has some discussion:

Reviewing the logs I am unable to find even a single article with a
 wait anywhere near that.

By day two or so it was showing an average of several days during some
hours. Some people speculated that in cases where no edits had been
made since PC was activated it was simply taking the time between the
prior two versions or something like that.

A further off-list comment suggests that a possible cause is that the act of
applying Pending Changes is being counted as the first review of the previous
edit, even if it's been weeks since the previous edit.

Known issue, logging here as well.

These websites have outdated javascripts installed in MediaWiki:Common.js that
change the tab of the main page.

They can easily be corrected by a local administrator, based on the en.wp
version, which currently reads:

var nstab = document.getElementById('ca-nstab-main')
if (nstab  wgUserLanguage=='en') {
while (nstab.firstChild) nstab = nstab.firstChild
nstab.nodeValue = 'Main Page'
}

Patch that fixes html issue - however this entire thing is insecure...

I found what was wrong. DPL was using html in a rather hacky (and somewhat
insecure way). When mediawiki changed how it handled html in r61913, the hack
this extension used broke.

the attached patch fixes the issue as far as I can tell. However, not only is
the approach this extension takes to raw html utterly scary, it is also
insecure. (This patch doesn't add any new security issues, but i feel hesitant
contributing a fix to the mechinism, which in my opinion is insecure until the
underlying security problems have been addressed)

The introduction of the vector skin changed the default thumbnail size to
360px, which we find too large. Please change it back to our community
decision, 250px.

There is some discussion at it here:

OK, I've written a patch. Now it should check for the abusefilter-log-detail
right before displaying the examine page.

Besides fixing the bug, I've moved all functions which check user's rights to
AbuseFilter class to make them somewhat more global - because I needed
canSeeDetails and because canViewPrivate had already been duplicated by
canSeePrivate.

I have some some small problems with MediaWiki configuration so I'm not quite
sure how the patch is going to behave in a less messy environment...

[Bug 24199] New: DynamicPageList2 has security issues

 Component: DynamicPageList2
AssignedTo: wikibugs-l@lists.wikimedia.org
ReportedBy: bawolff...@gmail.com

I fixed some XSS vulnerabilities in r68811 - However I still feel there are
problems with this extension.

*The playing with $wgRawHtml - this in itself is not a security vulnerability,
but makes it easy to give yourself problems. before r68811 the following:
DPL
  category = Africa
   count= 2
  resultsfooter=htmlscriptalert('d')/script/html
/DPL
Did bad things because resultsfooter was interpreted as if $wgRawHtml was on. I
think I got most of those types of issues in r68811, but I am not really
familiar with the extension's options at all, so its quite likely i missed
something (esp for the find and replace options).
**The approach of using wiki-syntax mixed with html sections seems like a bad
idea. It seems as if it'd be better to use either wiki-syntax only or html only
then you wouldn't have to worry about escaping for both ways (but thats just my
opinion after reading the code for 10 minutes, perhaps there is valid reason to
do that)...
*The ordercollation option does not seem to be escaped when put in the sql...

This is just after a brief scan through the code when trying to fix Bug 22675 -
I wouldn't be surprised if there are other issues.

[Bug 18883] Use a 301/302 status code for redirects

2010-06-30 Thread bugzilla-daemon

--- Comment #12 from Tim Starling tstarl...@wikimedia.org 2010-07-01 05:16:25

(In reply to comment #7)
This bug is not about asking to add 3xx redirects to Wikipedia - in fact it
just asking to add support HTTP status codes to MediaWiki. This is about HTTP
 protocol compliance.

(In reply to comment #8)
An option to allow for standards compliance seems reasonable, at a minimum,
though changing the default behavior does as well, given that I don't see a
particularly good reason to buck the (reasonable) standard.

(In reply to comment #9)
The option should be to break compliance, or said otherwise, the default
 should
be for it to actually redirect and the option allows you to stop that.

We already comply with standards. There's nothing in the HTTP specification
which prohibits the sending of similar pages with different URLs. We use a
different URL to support the redirected from link. This system is a robust,
client-independent and standards-compliant method for implementing that
feature.
