Out of curiosity, developer as in mediawiki programmer and/or wikimedia
sysadmin, or some other meaning of the word developer. If the former, why the
need for a separate list? If the latter, perhaps it should be named something
else to avoid confusion.

The discussions would be centered around Indic language localization and more.
I don't think the larger mediawiki community would be interested in this.

The proposal is to create a mailing list for Mediawiki developers in India (so,
the former applies here). Alternatively, the name of the list could be
wikimedia-in-tech.

In that case I don't have any issue with the name. At first i thought the list
was going to be about developing a stronger presence in india (or some other
type of thing that would be split off from a foundation-l type mailing list)

I'm unsure if there'd be enough traffic for such a list, since the already
existing mediawiki-i18n list (who'd presumably be interested in this sort of
thing) only gets about 3 messages a month. But then again, I don't really know
whats going on on that side of things, so perhaps such a list is appropriate.

[Bug 26415] add I to AllPages redirects

2010-12-26 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=26415

--- Comment #12 from Happy-melon happy-me...@live.com 2010-12-26 12:05:18 UTC
---
(In reply to comment #11)
What I don't understand is why does Mediawiki implement '' purely in
HTML (i), with no CSS involved, but it implements our
allpagesredirect item we are talking about here purely in CSS with no
 HTML involved.

It should then be safe to remove all i from Mediawiki and replace
them with pure CSS. Same with em, strong, etc.

If for _some reason_ that is undesirable, then for that _same reason_
 why can't
div class=allpagesredirect.../div be please changed to
 i class=allpagesredirect.../i, or
 div class=allpagesredirecti.../i/div, or
 idiv class=allpagesredirect.../div/i?

Just like Mediawiki sends the combined HTML and CSS
 strong class=mw-specialpagerestricted.
Why did they eventually add that strong there, but are refusing to
add an i here, but at the same time not removing all HTML tags wholesale?

When an editor adds double apostrophes into a piece of wikitext, they are
saying make this piece of text italic. That is what the double apostrophes
*mean*. The i tag is special in the sense that *all* UAs are *required* to
display its contents in italics, which is obviously the correct thing to do to
a piece of text for which someone has said make this piece of text italic.

What all your comments above are not understanding is that most people Just
Don't Agree (TM) that redirects on Special:Allpages unquestionably *should*
always be in italics. Some wikis have decided that it's a good idea, and
implemented it with CSS using the classes that we agree it is beneficial to
provide. You have yourself explained that italics is sometimes *not* the best
way to highlight text, especially in certain character sets; it may be that
bold, or underline, or a different colour, would be a better way of
distinguishing them. All of which can be provided by a wiki very easily in
their own CSS. You are saying that we should be taking that flexibility *away*
from wikis, and forcing them to have the redirects in italics whether they want
them or not. That is not a progressive change.

change regex to ignore non-hexadecimal characters

The entity #xsee; is converted to î, because the php function hexdec() ignore
non-hexadecimal characters and so #xsee; is interpreted as #xee;.

In my opinion it is better, to leave this invalid entity unchanged.

Thanks.

amounts raised of $10.3, $12.0, $12.5, and $12.9 million raised to date (with
the appropriate amounts left to go). At least three of those have to be errors.

[Bug 26360] Disabling sessions in memcached produces open() error

2010-12-26 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=26360

--- Comment #4 from Brion Vibber br...@pobox.com 2010-12-27 02:03:48 UTC ---
It kind of looks to me like this error might be coming from PHP's memcached
module's session handler, not from MediaWiki's:

http://www.php.net/manual/en/memcached.sessions.php

When using the session handler provided by PHP's memcached module, you
basically set a few settings in your php.ini:

session.handler = memcache
session.save_path = tcp://127.0.0.1:11211

With $wgSessionsInMemcached *enabled*, MediaWiki takes over the session handler
settings completely, overriding whatever's configured. But with it *disabled*
(as default), MediaWiki will override session.save_handler to whatever's set in
$wgSessionHandler unless it's null.

By default, $wgSessionHandler is set to files -- which is normally the
default session handler on most PHP setups.

As a result, MediaWiki is changing your session settings *FROM* the PHP
memcached module *TO* files, which gets very confused with a session path
that's set to tcp://blah. :)

Really we probably should *not* be messing with the session handler settings
unless we're taking them over entirely. I think we initialized it to files back
in the day because there were a lot of bizarrely broken shared hosting systems
out there that basically just had totally broken session stuff, but that might
have just been a voodoo fix.

There are probably a few other old bug reports on the subject of the session
handlers being overridden.

[Bug 26333] Constructors calling grandparent constructors

2010-12-26 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=26333

--- Comment #1 from Brion Vibber br...@pobox.com 2010-12-27 02:16:57 UTC ---
Hmm, well this sort of thing actually seems to be done on purpose in those
classes; RevDel_ArchiveItem and RevDel_ArchivedFileItem set their 'file' or
'revision' members in a different way than their parent classes do, so calling
the parent would likely not work as intended.

While this works, it might make it easier on future maintenance to refactor the
classes a bit: eg RevDel_RevisionItem and RevDel_ArchiveItem could *both*
derive from the same parent class which contains their common code, rather than
RevDel_ArchiveItem extending RevDel_RevisionItem and then replacing a couple
bits.

Alternatively, the bit that processes $row should be split out to a second
function, so the child class need only override that single function instead of
skipping over its parent's constructor. (This would be a smaller code change.)

presumably the not reading of in attributes of tag extensions is some sort of
paranoia against XSS. It would perhaps make sense to make it not recognize tag
att=foobar  for consistency's sake.

not recognizing tag someAttribute= Seems sane to me. I expect to be required
to do tag someAttribute= if i want to pass it the empty string.

[Bug 26443] New: Search suggestions for namespace prefix returns single page result (Lucene + SimpleSearch / mwsuggest / opensearch)

2010-12-26 Thread bugzilla-daemon

Summary: Search suggestions for namespace prefix returns single
page result (Lucene + SimpleSearch / mwsuggest /

   Product: MediaWiki extensions
   Version: any
  Platform: All
OS/Version: All
Status: NEW
  Severity: enhancement
  Priority: Normal
 Component: Lucene Search
AssignedTo: rain...@eunet.rs
ReportedBy: br...@pobox.com

Broken out from bug 26372:

When typing a namespace prefix (eg 'Project:', 'Help:', 'Talk:') into the
search box, the suggestions traditionally return a few items from the beginning
of that namespace, alphabetically.

On live Wikimedia sites which are running the Lucene search engine, only a
single result is returned. (It can be verified this isn't an issue on the UI
side by checking the actual opensearch responses -- they really do only return
a single page title.)

For instance, on en.wikipedia.org right now typing Talk: returns the single
result Talk:. Help: returns Help:A day in the Life, but no others.

More results are expected, especially when the first result is something
funky-looking like a series of punctuation. :)

[Bug 26332] Spam-blacklist does not support unicode characters in regex, needed to filter internationalized domain names

2010-12-26 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=26332

--- Comment #3 from Bawolff bawolff...@gmail.com 2010-12-27 03:36:18 UTC ---
Sorry, the work around should not have the \b in it (presumably because things
like \xD0 aren't word characters in non-utf8).

\bмакросъемка\.рф becomes
\xD0\xBC\xD0\xB0\xD0\xBA\xD1\x80\xD0\xBE\xD1\x81\xD1\x8A\xD0\xB5\xD0\xBC\xD0\xBA\xD0\xB0\.\xD1\x80\xD1\x84

\bпример\.испытание becomes
\xD0\xBF\xD1\x80\xD0\xB8\xD0\xBC\xD0\xB5\xD1\x80\.\xD0\xB8\xD1\x81\xD0\xBF\xD1\x8B\xD1\x82\xD0\xB0\xD0\xBD\xD0\xB8\xD0\xB5

-

Would someone who knows about such things be able to comment if adding the /u
flag to the generated regexes would have any adverse performance affects?

Reassigning; as noted it's a config issue on the prototype server. If it hasn't
been corrected, it should be. (I'm not checking as I don't know the URL to the
proper prototype wiki to test this on offhand.)

[Bug 23377] Allow xlinks to upload.wikimedia.org in SVG files

--- Comment #2 from Brion Vibber br...@pobox.com 2010-12-27 03:41:03 UTC ---
Resolving as INVALID; as noted above, such links would be unstable, and not
suitable for linking between resources on a dynamic wiki system.

If interested in such things though, I'd recommend picking up thoughts from bug
7849 Find a way to parse SVG files to render wikilinks or other entries on
parameterized SVG ideas.

Anything built this way will need to be able to survive being moved from site
to site, from version to version, etc -- just as wikitext links are not raw
URLs hardcoding en.wikipedia.org.

[Bug 23844] move js-var dataCacheTime

--- Comment #1 from Brion Vibber br...@pobox.com 2010-12-27 04:00:06 UTC ---
There's not really a good place to put it; the classic 'js vars' block is
global (Skin::makeGlobalVariablesScript) and awkward to extend internally, and
there don't seem to be other querypage-specific script areas to merge it into.

Since the inline script doesn't appear to harm anything either, it's probably
not worth worrying about at this stage. If interfaces on OutputPage change in
future in a way that would make this super-easy to move into a nice big block,
then reopen/implement.

[Bug 23686] Ids in user contributions Atom feed are not unique

2010-12-26 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=23686

--- Comment #5 from Brion Vibber br...@pobox.com 2010-12-27 04:09:39 UTC ---
I think this is pretty much the same issue as the old bug 3998; technically
what we're doing is valid (considering each page as an item, and we're
including multiple versions of them) but it is indeed probably not matching up
well with what receiving entities will be expecting.

Probably best to change the feeds to go ahead and use ids that are specific to
the revision and the way it's being displayed, ensuring that feed-processing
systems do keep them separate in their caches.

(My old arguments on bug 3998 are in the other direction, but I'm pretty
convinced now that I was wrong in 2005. ;)

[Bug 22950] Request to add java applet support

Looks like there's already such an extension (untested; it looks horribly
insecure though, but hosting arbitrary applets probably will remain so anyway):

http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:Java_Applet

Note to original poster -- I've actually been mulling over related issues about
how to securely create and link interactive thingies like this, but it may be
some while before it's all together and ready to start feeding back to
MediaWiki. We'll need to collect some related old bug reports...

[Bug 26415] add I to AllPages redirects

--- Comment #13 from jida...@jidanni.org 2010-12-27 04:30:49 UTC ---
They can easily turn it back off with
.allpagesredirect{font-style:normal}
while text browser users on the other hand have no way of turning i
on for themselves. We had this same argument getting
mw-specialpagerestricted to finally carry an additional strong tag,
instead of the simple plain initial CSS implementation. Why is this
case different?

[Bug 26349] SimpleSearch: Enter key cannot trigger 'Go' button directly now

Expected behaviors:

(1) When the dropdown box is not appearing: Enter == Go
(2) When the dropdown box is appearing but no item is highlighted: Enter == Go
(3) When the contains... item is highlighted: Enter == Fulltext search

This is what I want (maybe not the original coder's idea):

(4) When the dropdown box is appearing and a suggested item is highlighted: the
item is in the search box, with the part which is not typed by user
highlighted, Enter == Go
