[Bug 45811] Unable to use empty string as parameter (Required for continue=)

2013-03-06 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=45811

--- Comment #2 from Yuri Astrakhan  ---
(In reply to comment #1)
> Why is the magic value "" instead of something like "start"? To save bytes?

:) No, but I didn't think the sandbox would not let me pass in an empty string
value as a parameter. Also, there could be other modules that I am not aware of
that may allow empty string parameters. That's why i think apisandbox should be
able to handle such cases. This was also anomie's opinion when discussed on
IRC.

There was a number of other ideas - always return the "continue" element in
addition to "query-continue" in the result, unless there was a "continue"
parameter. Or add a "string|bool" api parameter type, and let apisandbox handle
that as described above, while keeping all other strings as non-empty.

There is no need to use sprites here, especially if it's causing problems.
ResourceLoader instead lets use a separate image for each arrow, all of which
will be embedded into the CSS as data URLs (in modern browsers, but there is a
working fallback for older ones).

Created attachment 11891
  --> https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/attachment.cgi?id=11891&action=edit
shows pixel glitches

The arrow that GuidedTour sometimes draws on guiders has some pixel glitches.
In the attachment you can see obvious pixels below the arrow tip , and I think
a faint darkening above the arrow.

I think this occurs because CSS "sprites" the arrow heads from the png
modules/ext.guidedTour.arrows.png[1] , and in this the pixels from the shadow
around one arrowhead bleed into the crop rectangle of the nearby arrowhead.

The fix is to remake the png with a bigger gap between each arrowhead so the
shadow pixels don't overlap bounding rectangles, then adjust the CSS.

Yes, that might the actual solution for the problem.
Most important thing would probably be showing the user what their changes were
and providing them in a way easier to paste/manually merge:

In the past I you also had the option to merge the others' edits into yours and
then copy the result to the edit area, but now the textarea at bottom is
read-only.

prepareToSendOnTour does two things:

1. Sets the user pref so they don't get the tour every time they go to
Special:GettingStarted
2. When that's done (or in the event it fails), actually send them on the tour.
 This means:
2a. Set the tour cookie.
2b. Actually change the URL.

So this function actually has nothing to do with analytics.

FWIW, as I've noted in bug 4285 (Comment #5,

Re-opening as there are two things going on here:

* CSSJanus mishandling it (corrupting the data)
* CSSJanus not flipping it (keeping it as-is)

The first is a bug, the second is a wontfix enhancement.

I noticed that the proposed change added a test case where the box-shadow is
changed, that's wrong. I don't know how it is currently changing it, but it
should be in a state where it isn't changed at all.

When I reverted it I thought that that was the current status (it not changing
shadows when flipping).

Dario may want to chime in here, so adding him.

For reference: we are looking at gettingstarted click data still, but we're
actually using gettingstarted page impressions to create cohorts for analysis,
so doing whatever you want to do to ensure no more duplicate events or other

This was previously proposed by Roan himself actually:

Doesn't matter: set pl in the preference -> "Strony specjalne" from sidebar ->
bingo. ;)

Ok, this should work I suppose, at least for aliases. However, it doesn't
support your usecase but only the case where one has a link from their wiki.

|R would perhaps be more consistent and yes, definitely not all PAGENAME & co.,
but I suggest to avoid bikeshedding and leave this to whoever decides to
implement this. ;-)

[Bug 23730] Revision deletion log does not specify which revisions were affected to non-Sysops

Why should it?

Because otherwise the logs make no sense at all: they don't even for sysops,
except that they have a workaround. With a mention of the revision, I can know
what actually happened (a general picture, for instance revision X was modified
by A and then by B), ask clarifications to the sysop if needed, choose a
meaningful link to the logs or to the revision to mention the action (and ask
something about it) etc.

[Bug 45825] New: GettingStarted article click gives mw.Api console error on page visit

Bug ID: 45825

   Product: MediaWiki extensions

Status: NEW
  Severity: normal

wikibugs-l@lists.wikimedia.org
Classification: Unclassified
   Mobile Platform: ---

In both Firefox and Chromium, upon clicking an article in GettingStarted, the
console reports an error:

mw.Api error: http Object { xhr={...}, textStatus="error", exception= "" }

This is I think GettingStarted's prepareToSendOnTour() making an api post to
set the userjs-gettingstarted-showtour user option to 0.

action=options&format=json&change=userjs-gettingstarted-showtour%3D0&token=4bf9599f4830316d4bdc4fd49a597cea%2B%5C

The user preference seems to be set to 0 despite the API warning and there
isn't an actual API return failure, so maybe it's not significant. It could be
related to the apparent double calls to prepareToSendOnTour (bug 45824), or
just making the API request and then leaving the page with window.location =
url;

In Chromium and Firefox I find a single click on a task in GettingStarted
results in prepareToSendOnTour() being called twice.

I took screenshots of the Firebug stack each time. They seem identical except:
* 1st call is from jquery.stall.js line 52 in the
if ( typeof e.target.dispatchEvent != 'undefined' ) test
  and dispatch() shows an event with a timeStamp.
* 2nd call is from jquery.stall.js line 68 in the
if ( evt === undefined || evt.eventPhase <= 2 ) test
   and dispatch() shows timeStamp=0.

Good recursive joke. This polish user only knows Specjalna:Strony_specjalne,
which doesn't work in ja wiki.

> So the obvious question is: we already have had conflicts between different
> special pages with same canonical name; are we sure we won't have conflicting
> translations and aliases?

I don't think so, because this is a in-site feature. It does not manage aliases
other than local ones, retrieving the canonical, which is supposed to be
universal.

Related to the "C" command. I consider that it is sufficient for this
functionality to be added only to {{#special:}} and {{ns:}} functions, and not
to the entire PAGENAME family. Thus, if you type in a spanish language wiki,
you will get:

{{#special:LoQueEnlazaAquí|C}} → Special:Whatlinkshere
{{ns:Plantilla|C}} → Template

[Bug 26811] Database connection errors display IP address

https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=26811

--- Comment #5 from PleaseStand  ---
I disagree with the "security vulnerability" part as well; however, this report
nevertheless describes an actual bug in the software, in that the database
server's IP address may be shown even if both $wgShowHostnames and
$wgShowSQLErrors are false.

Note that in some environments, private IP addresses are considered to be
sensitive information (cf. PCI-DSS 2.0 Requirement 1.3.8 "Do not disclose
private IP addresses and routing information to unauthorized parties.").

[Bug 38932] Downloadable code blocks (suggestion from IRC)

The DokuWiki link changed to
https://www.dokuwiki.org/wiki:syntax#downloadable_code_blocks; for the use of
Gists on blogs, cf.
http://www.sandywalsh.com/2011/06/effective-units-tests-and-integration.html.

Some thoughts:

- Some code blocks should be downloadable, some (snippets?) maybe not. I'd
prefer the default to be downloadable.

- There's always lots of drama with user-specified filenames on insecure
browsers that MediaWiki fosters, so this needs to be checked.

- Gists are saved server-side, DokuWiki seems to parse the page on every call
which also means that the link may lead to updated (= different) content than
shown. I haven't tried it, but data URIs should be performant, stable and
supported by enough browsers.

Otherwise: Really cool! :-) In many cases, I just want to copy and paste bits
of the code block, but often enough I'd like to save the lot and so far have to
carefully maneuver the mouse pointer twice and then still face whitespace
issues & Co.

When using Special:Import to do a transwiki import (e.g., from
), if the destination title
already exists, the revisions will just be "merged" (dumped) onto the same
title, without warning the user. This is pretty awful. I couldn't find a bug
that was tracking this issue.

Somewhat related to bug 6808.

Did all of this happen before this got merged/deployed? :-/

And I think a fourth point might be "get rid of the Special:UserLogin checkbox"
(if that's not already included in the three points above). It's pretty bad
user interface, I think. The default should just be sane.

The database did not find the text of a page that it should have found, named

This is usually caused by following an outdated diff or history link to a page

[Bug 45820] New: Links in "In other languages" broken when language is an alias or out of use

2013-03-06 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=45820

Bug ID: 45820
   Summary: Links in "In other languages" broken when language is
an alias or out of use
   Product: MediaWiki extensions
   Version: unspecified
  Hardware: All
OS: All
Status: NEW
  Severity: normal
  Priority: Unprioritized
 Component: WikidataRepo

Classification: Unclassified
   Mobile Platform: ---

Set up a Babel-box with "no" as one of the entries, then try to accsess the
language "norsk bokmål" on the page for P236
(http://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Property:P236?uselang=en). When you click on the
link in "In other languages" this will fail to change the language as the "no"
languahe is a meta language for both (nn - nynorsk and nb - bokmål) written
forms of Norwegian. We now only supports the codes "nb" and "nn". Because
Norwegian (bokmål) Wikipedia uses no.wikipedia.org the erroneous use of "no" in
the Babel-box will be quite common.

More generally language aliases should be resolved in various places of the
code, as this kind of bug is very annoying for the user.

Dependent on ClickTracking:

* ArticleFeedback
* ArticleFeedbackv5
* CustomUserSignup
* E3Experiments
* Vector extension
* WikimediaMaintenance

This was from a grep and quick examination sort of thing. Many of these
extensions were designed to have a soft dependency on ClickTracking, but
accidentally make it a hard dependency.

Note normal conflict edit resolution doesnt care about sections... (it feeds

It sounds like what is being asked for is a nicer edit conflict screen. The

Do you mean MathJax or the MediaWiki extension that integrates MathJax? I'm
guessing the latter.

> http://people.cs.kuleuven.be/~dirk.nuyens/Extension_MathJax/MathJax.php.txt

I think that's the wrong extension. The regular Math extension includes
optional MathJax http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:Math#MathJax

Not sure if that's related, but for the actual Android and iOS apps, you could
also ship a copy of MathJax (slimming it down) to reduce network load and
improve rendering speed.

Is MathJax still being developed?
It should be possible to make MathJax work on mobile but it would require
changes to the MathJax code base...

Looking at the source code here it currently doesn't make use of ResourceLoader
(RL) but uses hooks which are not available on mobile.
http://people.cs.kuleuven.be/~dirk.nuyens/Extension_MathJax/MathJax.php.txt

My moving this to use RL it should be relatively easy to get it optimised and
running on mobile...

What existing disambiguation page? Are you referring to existing items which
link to wikipedia disambiguation pages?
>
> I think this can be closed as wontfix unless use cases can be provided that
> can
> not be solved with the disambiguation page.

When you create a new page it does not have links. When you then go to Wikidata
looking for the corresponding item the search engine will often bring you to
the wrong item. This often happens even if the right item exists. In this use
case links to similar items would be a great help.

Disambiguation pages won't help (this is a new page so it is not on the
disambiguation page).

Search doesn't help - see above.

Now that we have switched to an opt-in version of AFT5 on the English
Wikipedia, we would like to remove comments from disabled 'lottery' articles
from this Central Feedback page:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:ArticleFeedbackv5

Going forward, this page would only show comments from articles which have one
of these two categories: ' Category:Article Feedback 5' or 'Category:Article
Feedback 5 Additional Articles'.

The intent of this revision is to reduce the number of unmoderated comments on
this Central Feedback page, in a manner that is more consistent with this
community RfC closure:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Requests_for_comment/Article_feedback

[Bug 45814] New: setup OAI repository on beta

Bug ID: 45814
   Summary: setup OAI repository on beta
   Product: Wikimedia Labs
   Version: unspecified
  Hardware: All
OS: All
Status: NEW

The OAIRepository need to be setup on beta so lucene can request it updates.

We need an OAI mysql database and create a OAI user there. The wiki
documentation should have everything covered :
http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:OAIRepository#Install_on_Wiki

The OAI password is in a puppet variable: $passwords::lucene::oai_pass which
has already been populated.

[Bug 45786] search: craft a fake InitialiseSettings.php for lucene-search-2

2013-03-06 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=45786

--- Comment #2 from Antoine "hashar" Musso ---
Some progress with patchsets 14 and 15 of gerrit change 51677

I have made the puppet class to copy the InitialiseSettings-labs.php and have
lsearch to load a configuration file named /a/search/conf/mw-beta-context.php

I have hacked it manually on the instance, that let us have lsearch query OAI
update on beta labs. Will have to figure out how to generate that file
automatically after the conf has been synchronized.

The hook SkinAfterBottomScripts doesn't work on mobile. This probably needs to
be reconsidered.
