daniel added a comment. prop=description sounds like a good way to do this! It's a little more work, but provides a more sensible interface to clients. descsource=magicword|wikibase would work, but in general, clients should not know or care about this. At least, the default behavior in the absence of descsource should be a configuration option. One big question is however where this code would live. It will have to know about wikibase, but only have a soft dependency on it. So it shouldn't be in core. It can live in wikibase, but I'd prefer it to be separate. Conceptually, this mechanism could be used to provide short descriptions without wikibase being installed. On the other hand, making this a separate extension may be too much overhead. Smalyshev added a comment. Maybe we should get a SPARQL server that allows a longer timeout period. The problem with it, along with obvious resource constraints (hardware costs money, supporting service instances costs money & needs people), if we have longer timeout this means we will have more heavy queries there. Which means the server would be more loaded. Which means, the next heavy query would take even more time, as it would be competing with server resources with the heavy queries already running on this server. This has a potential to evolve into a complete gridlock. There's of course a point where it's still OK because the server has enough resources. But I don't think queries that return many millions of results should be our target, at least not for the generic endpoint, and maybe not at all. TASK DESCRIPTIONTo make sharing queries with other people even easier, it would be nice if it was possible to include several languages of the template text in a query template, and on display the best available language would be chosen based on the user’s language.
The JSON structure could be fairly simple – support an object { "en": "foo", "de": "fu" } instead of the direct text. TASK DESCRIPTIONExperiment plan: create 500 lexemes (with random lemma etc) each of lexemes should contain 3-5 forms (with random representation) each of lexemes should have between 5 and 100 statements, each of these referencing some of those 500 lexemes (referencing self should probably be limited) for each of lexeme, do the following do action="" on its page start the counter load the page stop the counter Test result would be the every page load time per the lexeme statement count class (e.g. when referencing 1-3 lexemes per page the load takes x secs, when 10-15 lexemes y secs). If it seems to making test more "reliable", the experiment could be repeated and the average of results reported. NOTE: The test is only to be made when the lexeme data is actually loaded for the display in the statement. That should fix the problem for WMF sites. I also note that this behavior of not using ExternalUsernames if the client wiki doesn't have an interwiki map entry for the repo is going to start failing once the actor table starts being used. Csisc added a comment. @Bassem Concerning the intelligibility of Modern Standard Arabic, I did not say that Arab people do not understand Modern Standard Arabic at all. What I said is "Due to the existence of False friends between Modern Standard Arabic and Arabic dialects and due to the existence of several morphological particularities within the Arabic dialects, some Arabs can misunderstand some words within a text in Modern Standard Arabic. Adding labels to Wikidata entities will prevent such misunderstandings". The reason for this behavior can be seen here: https://www.wikidata.org/w/api.php?action="">. There is no language "en-US" in MediaWiki. Most code falls back to the default "en". But the API module that is responsible for suggesting properties does not. I can see how confusing this is. Unfortunately I don't have an idea for an easy fix. The error message is neither in Wikibase nor in the PropertySuggester, but in the basic MediaWiki core API code. We could try to teach the GetSuggestions.php API module to accept unknown language codes, but that alone would not fix the issue. The API would not fail any more, but still return nothing. It would need to fall back to English, and I don't know if this is a good idea. We could try to validate the language code in the frontend _javascript_ code before passing it to GetSuggestions.php. But since core seems to be fine with any string, I don't know how such a validation (against what?) would look like. I'm Lebanese and these so called "efforts" in Lebanon were done by some Christian militias during the Civil war cause they believed that being "Arab" = being "Muslim". These ideas were abandoned after the civil war ended in 1990 and the only people who kept talking about them were radicals. The official language of Lebanon and the Lebanese is Arabic as the constitution says. You are talking as if literal Arabic is not understood in Morocco, Algeria, and Tunisia, like we are writing in what? Classical Medieval Arabic! That's nonsense, and form of Arabic in the Maghrib are Accents and dialects, if some or even all Arabs felt they are harder to understand, its not like they'll have to "learn" it, give them some time and its will be understandable, as for the Maghrabi users, you make it sound like they'll never understand or adapt to Arabic Wikipedia, like they are learning and alien language. (I’ll go with ContextCursor for now – I don’t think CompactContext or something like that really fits, because this isn’t just a different representation of a Context, it’s a separate thing.) Use three different implementations for the different context types we have. Add Context::getCursor(), to return the associated ContextCursor. Change CheckResult to hold a ContextCursor instead of a full Context. (We could even make the constructor accept both, and call getCursor if necessary, so that none of the callers would have to change. Might be worth it, at least as an interim measure.) ContextCursor is easily serializable. (However, it’s not completely trivial – deserialization needs to instantiate one of three different classes – so I’d still add dedicated serializer and deserializer classes, instead of just having methods on ContextCursor itself.) We don’t (yet?) offer any way to get from a ContextCursor back to a full Context. Apart from this, Context stays as it is for now (no ContextData). Csisc added a comment. @1339861 This is not always accurate. Moroccan Arabic is used in Education in Morocco. There are also efforts in this context in Algeria, in Tunisia, and in Lebanon. Furthermore, there are many resources that are written in Arabic dialects/languages since the early 20th Century. Scientists in Tunisia have even found school lessons, mystic poems, religious speeches, and administrative information written in Tunisian during the 18th and 19th Century. We will publish a paper about that. However, this is not the most important reason about adding labels in Arabic dialects to Wikidata. In fact, there are many false friends between Arabic dialects and Modern Standard Arabic. Adding labels in Arabic dialects to Wikidata will prevent users from misunderstanding the articles of the Arabic Wikipedia. Furthermore, there are many Arab people who do not have sufficient proficiency to read and understand Modern Standard Arabic as it should be due to the poor literacy rates in some Arab countries. T187057: Constraint check results involving the current time are cached indiscriminately [M] is fixed per its two subtasks (properly). All these fixes are part of wmf.22. However, unfortunately the train is currently blocked – see T183961: 1.31.0-wmf.22 deployment blockers.
