[Wikimedia-l] Quality issues

2015-11-19 Thread Gerard Meijssen
Hoi,
At Wikidata we often find issues with data imported from a Wikipedia. Lists
have been produced with these issues on the Wikipedia involved and arguably
they do present issues with the quality of Wikipedia or Wikidata for that
matter. So far hardly anything resulted from such outreach.

When Wikipedia is a black box, not communicating about with the outside
world, at some stage the situation becomes toxic. At this moment there are
already those at Wikidata that argue not to bother about Wikipedia quality
because in their view, Wikipedians do not care about its own quality.

Arguably known issues with quality are the easiest to solve.

There are many ways to approach this subject. It is indeed a quality issue
both for Wikidata and Wikipedia. It can be seen as a research issue; how to
deal with quality and how do such mechanisms function if at all.

I blogged about it..
Thanks,
 GerardM

2015-11-19 Thread Wil Sinclair
No, I'm right here. Standing up for what I believe in, just like I stand up
for the principles I value everywhere, including IRC, on-wiki, and off-. It
seems y'all know where to find my opinion. So, if you're interested, go
look. If you're not, then feel free to just put me down here, as per the
ush.

Thanks for bringing me up, MZMcBride; should get a lot more people to look
at those IRC logs I was hoping to bring to everyone's attention.

Best!

If anyone's wondering what happened to Wil, lately he's been trolling a

[Wikimedia-l] Community Wishlist Survey - proposals phase ending soon

2015-11-19 Thread Danny Horn
Hi everyone,

There's just a few more days to add proposals on the Community Tech team's
Wishlist Survey. We're looking for the most important features and fixes
that our team can work on to help the core contributors on Wikimedia
projects.

https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/2015_Community_Wishlist_Survey

We've got about 140 proposals so far, which is clearly not enough, because
there's a very good chance that we don't have yours yet. You can submit
your proposal on the survey page, and you can discuss and endorse other
people's proposals too.

The proposal phase ends on Monday, and then we'll open voting on the
proposals a week later, on November 30th.

Thanks for checking it out; I'm looking forward to seeing your ideas.

[x-posted announcement]

Hello,

The next office hour of the Wikimedia Language Engineering team is
scheduled for next Wednesday, November 25th 2015 at 13:00 UTC. Similar to
our recent office hours, this is also going to be an online discussion over
Hangout/Youtube with a simultaneous IRC conversation. Due to the limitation
of Google Hangouts, only a limited number of slots are available. Hence, do
please let us know (on the event page) if you would like to participate on
the Hangout. The IRC channel #wikimedia-office and the Q&A channel for the
youtube broadcast will be open for interactions during the session.

Our last online round-table session was held in September 2015. You can
watch the recording here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nW5l7fNeMQg

Please read below for the event details and do let us know if you have any
questions.

Thank you

[Wikimedia-l] Wikimedia Conference: Join us in Berlin in April 2016

2015-11-19 Thread Christian Rickerts
Wikimedia Conference 2016 in Berlin

https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Conference_2016

Date: April 21-24, 2016

Registration: December 1–January 15, 2016

Dear Wikimedians,

It is my pleasure to invite Wikimedia affiliates, the WMF Board of Trustees
and staff, the Affiliations Committee, and the Funds Dissemination
Committee to join us in Berlin for the Wikimedia Conference 2016, hosted by
Wikimedia Deutschland, from April 21-24, 2016. WMDE and WMF staff are
working together closely to make this event fun, inspiring, and productive.
WMCON16 is made possible by the financial support of WMF.

You are invited to join us for three days of working, thinking, and
learning. Bringing all movement organizations together will give us the
opportunity to incorporate diverse perspectives and experiences into the
program.

For the first time, the Wikimedia Conference will focus on one core
theme: “Movement
Impact”. Our movement is striving for the biggest possible impact on Free
Knowledge, seeking to create impactful programs, processes, and support
structures aligned with our shared mission. At the same time, “impact” is a
term that we struggle with, and for which we lack a common definition. In
Berlin, we would like to unlock the potential for better collaboration,
learning, and development in our movement – and more impact of our
movement. The thematic strands and outcomes of our 2015 conference will
feed into the new program.

You will hear more about the program design process from the curator of the
Wikimedia Conference, Nicole Ebber, and the Program and Engagement
Coordinator, Cornelius Kibelka, in the coming days. Together with Wenke
Storn and Daniela Genter from our event management team they will keep you
updated about all things program and logistics in the coming weeks and
months.

On behalf of Wikimedia Deutschland, I am looking forward to welcoming you
in Berlin in April.

Kind regards,

Christian Rickerts
