[Wikimedia-l] Announcing the Wikimedia Iconathon 2013

2013-03-19 Thread Brandon Harris

The Wikimedia Foundation is partnering with the Noun Project[1] to do a
public service "Iconathon." The goal of this event is to generate 30-40 icons
for the public domain, with the intent of primarily using them on Wikimedia
Foundation projects. The event is open to the public in an effort to bring
talented designers and civic-minded individuals into the process. The event
will be held on April 6, 2013 at the Wikimedia Foundation headquarters in San
Francisco.

All icons will be released under a public domain license.

We want your help and input!

For more information, including a list of the icons we're working on,

Great!

IMHO this should be a global event with all chapters doing local iconathons.

Hoi,
Getting some experience first makes sense.. Going global is something that
can be done the next year ??
Thanks,

Surely this is a one off project. How many icons do we need?

Hoi,
It is not only how much we need for the English Wikipedia. We have many
more Wikipedias, Wikidata, Wiktionary, Wikisource

Really ... There are other people, applications who will be happy with a
large volume of icons.
Thanks,
Gerard

Most of the icons lists are not project-specific. The idea, as I
understand it, is to have a consistent set of icons that all the
projects can use.

Why? Just ask the community to spread the word and organize their own
local part of the event.

Re: [Wikimedia-l] Announcing the Wikimedia Iconathon 2013

2013-03-20 Thread Gerard Meijssen
Hoi,
There is no why, it is just that it is unlikely to be done this
year.

There are other *athons that take place, have a big impact and are not
reproduced elsewhere. I have seen large groups of people localise the
MediaWiki software in Pune for instance... This happened this year for a
second time as I understand. They really make a difference and given the
statistics for the localisation of MediaWiki and the associated software
there is a big need to have such sessions around the globe and have them
regularly.. They make a substantial difference in the usability of the
MediaWiki software.
Thanks,
 Gerard
