Filling vacancies in the EC will be one major item on the agenda of AGM. That said, only people who have become members at least three months prior to the date of the AGM are eligible to stand and to vote. Please remember that there is allowance for those members not in Bangalore to vote as well. What we will do in the next 2 weeks is to begin a draft nomination process and send it for your feedback and inputs. Re: [Wikimediaindia-l] Update, Examples Request: Wikipedia India Education Program
My 2p in response to Anirudh's question. The nature of the program is quite different from the program in the US. The US program focuses on the topic of Public Policy while the Indian program is open to all disciplines. A significant strategic difference between the Indian and US programs is the Program Pilot. The Pilot program in Pune is to test the various facets of strategy and implementation of the Indian adaptation of the Campus Program. The immense learnings from this Pilot will be extended to the nation-wide roll-out of the program. Another major strategic decision (unique to the India Program) has been to appoint a full-time Fellow (PJ Tabit) for a from June through August 2011 to . PJ was a Campus Ambassador in the US program and the chairman of the Chairman of the Ambassador Steering committee. He was instrumental in getting the Pilot off the ground coordinating between campus ambassadors and professors. Having an experienced full-time person working for the program for the initial stages was critical. Re: [Wikimediaindia-l] Let's *Talk*
all of us do. It is fantastic to have her on the team. Period. The program is a pilot - and we made a ton of mistakes. Sorry, let me rephrase that. I led the initiative so all responsibility should be mine. I made a ton of mistakes. I promise the following. We will have a thorough, honest and fact based evaluation. We will be open to make all the changes that are required. We will not let the events of the past few days force us into a bunker mentality. We will be open and we will be intellectually rigorous. We will learn and we will improve. The India opportunity is massive - and our ambitions are huge. It is also fraught with challenges. Unless we try and do things - new and tough and complex things - we will never be able to realise our true potential. I know that some who have participated in these exchanges are driven by an awe-inspiring love and passion for Wikipedia. I urge you to continue to come forward and work with others and us. Come forward early though - and stay engaged through the journey. It will have ups and downs. On communication, I urge everyone to maintain WP:CIVILITY and WP:NPOV in all our interactions. On this - and to be fair - quite a few other interactions recently on totally unrelated topics (and involving a whole host of others), I daresay we have drifted from core Wikipedia principles. These should apply to us to all our community's interactions as religiously as we apply them to our projects. I would urge folks who agree with me to write back. Even a +1 will do. Let's hear the voices of the quieter folks. Let's hear from the folks who don't always get involved in mailing list exchanges out of either apprehension or apathy. Let's move forward. [Wikimediaindia-l] Wiki 11 Pune report
Hello All This is a slightly belated report of the Wiki 11 celebrations in Pune on January 15, 2012. The celebrations were coincided with the first gathering of Wikipedia Club Pune http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Wikipedia_Club_Pune. The Club had met on the 14th where participants were instructed on the model, nature and basics of Wikipedia. The 15th saw 40+ participants gather in the computer lab at SICSR, Pune for hands-on Wikipedia editing as well as the 11th anniversary celebrations. The numbers therefore made this the *largest Wiki 11 celebration in India*. The participants were largely high school and college students. The morning session involved a detailed explanation of the five pillars of Wikipediahttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Five_pillars stressing the importance of contributing neutral and free content. Feedback for each sessions was immediately gathered on the Wikipedia Club Pune Facebook Pagehttps://www.facebook.com/WikipediaClubPune . The second session involved hands-on editing beginning with talk page posting, signing of posts, sandbox editing, wiki-linking etc. Then following a detailed explanation of referencing, the participants were encouraged (under supervision) to reference articles related to Pune. The final session involved the business end of the Wiki-11 celebration with a huge Wiki-globe cakehttp://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Wiki_Club_Pune_1.JPG. We were further buoyed by the presence of the WP English SIG chair Ashwin who encouraged and helped the participants in editing and did the honours cutting the cake. The participants and the organizers participated in a Google+ Hangout with Hisham and the rest of the WMF office in Delhi and Nitika and the WP 11 party in Kolkata. The participants were quite excited with both Wikipedia and its community. Their enthusiasm was reflected in both their editing as well as willingness to return for the next meeting of the club. The pictures of the event have been uploaded to commons and can be found here http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Wikipedia_11_in_India. The next meeting of the Wikipedia Club Pune will be on Saturday, 21st Jan. The Wikipedia Club and celebrations were quite excellently organized by Abhishek Suryavanshi and several other Campus Ambassadors in Pune. *[Something I posted as a message to Pradeep's talk page on his decision to retire from Wikipedia. But I think may make sense to many of you. Please ignore if you think I'm caballing]* * * *Why retire from here?* Remember the good old days? When we used to edit in our own cocoons? The only communication between two editors was through talk pages and the occasional use of [[Special:Emailuser]]. And we had fun. That fun is why we're still here. We moved on to more communication, more outreach. All good. We need to spread the word. We're evangelists of the noblest of causes. It's all good. Now there are mailing lists. And IRC. And meetups. And Chat. Chain mails and more chain mails. Each more frustrating than the other. We're all in cabals. If not voluntarily, we're slotted into them by force of opinion. As this message is being read by others visiting this page, I'm being slotted into one. You have to be pro-someone and anti-someone else. And we fight till our teeth come loose. And then some more. Politics is fun now. Wikipedia, not so much. And if this lack of AGF, too much BITE, BATTLE and blah is too much, retire. But not from Wikipedia. Retire from the mailing lists, the meetups, the cabals and the works. If you're considering quitting Wikipedia, quit those instead. Wikipedia can still be fun. Edit the articles on astronomy and India space projects again. India-related patrolling. Contribute to Commons. Only respond to messages on your talk page. And that occasional email. As an experienced editor who's largely inactive, I've considered retiring often rather than staying in limbo. Time and again, I've decided not to. I may not be able to contribute regularly, but I can step in that one time when all the experience probably counts for something. Because Wikipedia was there for me when I really needed it and I will be there when it really needs me. We've been struggling with editor retention and that's understandable. People quitting Wikipedia because it's now a battleground is understandable. Valuable, experienced editors quitting because the mailing lists are suffocating, is NOT. You can edit. Always. Which is my point exactly. The issue is not on-wiki. And Pradeep has quit from Wikipedia over this issue. While I have no intention of getting involved in an already hot-headed debate, I am concerned that an editor of 5 years has quit. I am not underestimating issues or ignoring them. While so many are debating about at the issue, I'm just pointing at the highly unfortunate fallout.
