Sidenote, commenting myself: booting the patched box with acpi=noirq makes
the box boot normally, so the Command timed out, resetting card-issue looks
like acpi

Even worse. I tried now the same exercise with all the kernels and the result

hah, you must make sure ACPI video driver is loaded AFTER i915 driver.
so please reload the acpi video driver manually after boot and make sure
/proc/acpi/video/ exists
