For all those interested I was able to resolve my issue detailed below
by recompiling my imlib2, libpng and imagemagick packages and removing
some support options
i removed apng support as well as lzma compression and hdri support from
my packages..
One of these fixed the issue on reboot

A new icon rendering problem has appeared on my system, I'm not sure the
source of the issue but icons for tasks and menu items are rendered
slightly offset (only in awesome), so there is a sliver of white space
on either side of the icon that is not filled with the theme colors..
