In very enjoyable weather on Sunday 30 November 2014, over 100 OFO members
and friends spend an excellent day birding the Niagara River. The purpose of
the trip was to identify and age the largest number of gull species and see
other rarities on the River. It was impressive to have so many birders

approximately 45 min. after 4:10 p.m.
I was hoping to see the albino Bonaparte's Gull fly by but no dice!

Yesterday, in the afternoon, we saw a Rough-legged Hawk (light morph immature)
hovering almost completely motionless - low over a mown cornfield along
highway 26 near Collingwood. The unmistakable dark carpal patch contrasting
with the white under-wing and the long white tail feathers with a d
There was a juvenile Purple Sandpiper today at 4:30 P.M. offering superb looks
as it probed amongst the abundant algae on the shore at Shell Park, on the
south side of the pier.
Elsewhere, the adult male King Eider was also offering superb looks near the
St. Catharines Marina in Port Weller.

An adult male Harlequin Duck was found today by myself and Theresa Dobko near
"Sand Beach Road Parkette”. We had been looking for the previously reported
immature Harlequin from several vantage points along the shoreline east of Col.
Sam Smith’s when we found this bird instead. He was showing th
Snowy Owl seen on Wellington County Road 14 about half way between Arthur
and Conn. The bird was an immaculate white all over. Perched on a hydro pole
near houses with 9300 fire number. Observed at 2:00 pm this afternoon for
about 5 minutes and still there when I left.

Seen around 1 pm today - 2 snowy owls near Comber - 1 between 401 & Lakeshore
Road 305 just west of Comber Sideroad & other between Lakeshore Road 305 &
County Rd. 42 just west of Comber Sideroad.

Mark Ansell and I had a dark phase Pomarine Jaeger at 2:15 today at Queen's
Royal Park. This is the park located at the mouth of the Niagara River opposite
the Fort.

This afternoon I picked out 4 Greater white-fronted Geese at Ridgetown among
the hundreds of Canada Geese. Also present 3 SNOW GEESE and at least 2
CACKLING GEESE. A NORTHERN SHRIKE was nearby as well.
Over at Blenheim Lagoons an impressive flock of 43 SNOW GEESE were present.

Reesor Pond is in Markham Ont, on the west side of Reesor Rd. between Hwy. 7
and the 407.
Ravenshoe Rd. is near the southern-most tip of Lake Simcoe. Go north on Hwy
404, which is now open all the way to Woodbine. North on
Today at 11:30 am there were 5 Snow Geese on Reesor Pond. 2 blue morphs and 2
white morphs were together in the shallows above the southern spit (ie looking
straight out) and another white morph was discovered in amongst a crowd of
Canada Geese on the North-west spit.

There is currently a sub-adult Pomarine Jaeger flying around off of Queen's
Royal Park. There was also another jaeger sp. further out but we have not
relocated it.
Lots of Horned Grebes and some Red-throated Loons around too.
