nmap is an excellent tool, go to www.insecure.org. Be very careful with it
though, you can cause outages if you don't know how to use it properly, read
the documentation carefully.

program to start with is nmap - works with windows and unix. There
are others such as portscan, satan and so forth that are usable as
well.
