The beep is a usability device for the blind, introduced by the GNOME team for
2.4. You could file a bug at bugzilla.gnome.org to see if they could make it

I'm seeing the same thing with 9.2-rc2. Also, gdmgreeter crashes. Gdmlogin works,
with the exception of the above.
