gnome hangs when clicking 'Desktop' menu

I have debian etch, with gnome installed. I connect via vnc and have 'gnome-session ' in my .vnc/xstartup file. It seems to work fine but hangs when ever I click on 'Desktop' on the menu/panel. All other menu items work as expected, until 'Desktop' is clicked, then everything stops
