I can reproduce it on powerpc on sid, not on sarge (in the etch chroot
on bruckner, no tetex is installed, so I can' test.

in former times I could use a line like
\includegraphics[height=0.3\textheight]{pics/VDE}
and latex would choose the right file (.eps for latex, .png for
pdflatex).
Now pdflatex detects correctly that it should include the .png, but
