This error occurs on my system with same cdparanoia version.
And a DVDRAM attached to a sata controller via ide.

Same problem here, by the way.
System freezes with kernel 2.6.18 on a T43. Also using the ata_piix driver.
In my case, cdparanoia freezes (cdparanoia 3.10+debian-pre0-2), and grip

However, system also freezes if cd is inserted after I login to gnome. It

All people that observed this bug seem to use the ata_piix SATA driver.
Daniel, do you have a machine using this driver?
Note that the problem has been reported on LKML[1] by another person.

Reason why I downgraded the severity: I could not reproduce this bug on
my amd64/i386 systems whith four different drives, two of them are SATA
(Plextor 760SA, Plextor 708A, Pioneer DVDR-710 and Samsung SH-D16x) and
three kernel versions (2.6.16, .17, .18).

I can confirm this bug on my thinkpad laptop. System freezes trying
cdparanoia -Q
I reverted to 3a9.8-14 which works perfectly well.
Thank you,

cdparanoia freezes my SATA thinkpad laptop (with dvd-rami device) with both
2.6.17
and 2.6.18 kernels. But for rendering the program unusable, the system freeze
can cause also serious data loss.
This could be some SCSI related seri
