During the BoF about cruft, we speak about speed issue of cruft. I just take a look at cruft code (not a long look though). I think you should replace find by locate (only 1 occurrence in cruft script). This can give you a great improvement and we only be inaccurate of the amount of time the run of cruft is separated from the run of updatedb. Just to make a suggestion.
