Nothing happens if I move
I have removed the proprietary ATI Catalyst driver, re-installed gdm3,
re-installed Xorg, and rebooted and Xorg is now working. I am not sure why
the update triggered this problem.

I see you have the nouveau driver loaded, indicating you have nvidia
hardware.
This is the same symptom I reported using the nvidia driver in bug
#775012.
I can disable the display manager and boot to a console, then use
startx to get a KDE session.
