I prepared an upload with a new upstream that fix this bug.
However, since I'm no longer involved in the maintenance of this
package (#890767), I'd prefer that another team member take a look at
the git repo and complete the upload to fix this bug.

Hm, I can't say that I understand why you left qemu-system-misc in
Depends... AFAICT, it has the most peculiar architectures for
emulation, and probably least desired for installation for most people.

After reproducing this information leak for a while, it occurred to me to go
report it, and I see I'm not alone :)
Apparently there's a whole little cottage industry of ways people have been
trying to use to get this working, e.g.:

I have no time to further maintain this. Therefore this is going to be orphaned
soon.

Indeed, new releases are out and since 3.3.0 there is a new fixture
(caplog) which an increasing number of projects start to use, so
we would need an updated py.test to be able to package them (we run
tests at build time)
