I am unable to add my parralell printer to CUPS having removed it due to its
failure.

Tried both of these settings at the same time and it caused to things to
happen, I loose video from shortly after grub until the xserver starts. I get
a distorted kdm background mouse moves around but no keyboard response
including ctrl alt
I dont think that will work as the card is an AGP card.

While updating initramfs-tools today I recieved an error from dpkg informing me
that installation had failed.
On running the suggested dpkg --configure -a this is what I recieved

Thanks guys that has indeed worked as desired.
I restarted the dbus demon and then simply allowed aptitude to
reconfigure the partly installed package and that has now installe
