What I did is just a workaround, but I don't think that many users use Unity
with transparent panel and without AppMenu, so it's fixed for 90% of users.
Maybe it'll also be efficient to change if (proxy != NULL) check to
if (proxy != NULL g_str_has_prefix(...)).
As I said in comment
- Click on desktop to get it focused
- Move the mouse to top panel
- You should see the deskop menu now
This doesn't work with Unity 2D, see bug 769254 for that.

You need to use vte 0.30 with gtk 3.2, while ubuntu only has 0.28.
If the same were to happen with 0.30, it would be either a bug in the gtk
a11y impl, or in vte's.
Can we backport a patch from 0.30 as a SRU?
