same here in 12.04. copy files ~6.5GB to my phone (samsung galaxy s3)
ends up gvfs 'eating' of all available ram - 4GB, and then gui hangs up,
after that its either prayer, or reboot.

acpi=off disabled battery indicator and processor stayed at 100%.
instead acpi=off I have addded: acpi_osi=Linux
works like a charm!

I found kind of a workaround for this problem.
1. gedit /etc/default/grub
2. change:
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash"
to
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash acpi=off"
3. sudo update-grub
4. reboot
5. now the brighness controls works but there is no indicator on the upper
right corne
from what I remember on 11.04 it worked just fine. after upgrade 11.04>11.10 it
was still working fine.
but I had other issues and I had to install 11.10 from scratch.
