It transpires that the problem is to do with the mobile broadband that many of
us now use. Its compression methods are what mangled the files, though I have
now moved from Vodafone ot T-mobile with none of the symptoms.

I have just tried the same using the live CD (a CD verified as free from
defects) with the same results, so it's definitely a bug rather than any
installation problems. Would be pleased to hear that the team have

Yes, there is no problem with the commonly used website itself, which I
used before with 8.10, and I also tried tar.gz files elsewhere on other
sites with the same result to verify this.
Although this is not a security matter, I do think it's not an
unimportant one, because everyone uses Archive

except Agatha, which is a tar.bz2 file.
