CORRECTION: I solved my problem by deleting the CONTENT of this file:
~/.local/share/evolution/calendar/system/calendar.ics
And also this file: ~/.evolution/calendar/local/system/calendar.ics
I left the (now empty) files there after deleting their contents, in
case something was expecting them.
Thanks to @JayShauer's clue about evolution-alarm-notify, I finally
managed to stop the phantom reminder popups that have plagued me since
upgrading to Ubuntu 20.04. I did it by deleting this file (which hadn't
been changed in years):
~/.local/share/evolution/calendar/system/calendar.ics
Same issue for me as I'd like general notifications just not routed to
Gnome via the Evolution popup.

Agree with Joseph Borg about #8. Evolution notifications are turned on
in Gnome Settings. But popup reminders are turned off, yet they still
appear.

In the file /etc/xdg/autostart/org.gnome.Evolution-alarm-notify.desktop I
changed the line
Bug status changed to invalid, changing that notification setting should
not affect the pop-up behavior of evolution alarm notify

Status: New => Invalid
