the culprit is thinkpad-keys & gnome-power-manager. As mjg wrote on
#37555:
"Ah! Can you go to System/Preferences/Power Management, select the
"general" tab and disable "Dim the laptop panel when idle", then see if
things work?"

Some other program running may be grabbing the keyboard/mouse. Attach
output from "ps aux" before locking the screen.
