Looking at the changelog this appears to be intentional, I believe it
would be, as usual, pointless to debate with Bastian on the matter
- Make auto-resize use half-scale or 2x if the player would fit on the
screen

I'm having the same issue, but apparently this comes from upstream. Kind
of a bummer because I generally play the video in a corner while I'm
working on something else.

set Preferences->Settings->Display->Resize the window when a new video
is loaded.
Then double click a video file and voila.
