You are assuming that they are no other patents than Google's on VP8.
This is an unproven assertion, and some experts have clearly voiced
their serious doubts.
The VideoLAN project has an informal policy of not taking software
patents into accounts when taking decision for the simple reason that:
AVC offers much better compatibility across encapsulation formats
(notably MPEG-TS) and playback devices than WebM currently does. The
Ubuntu community is not going to take care of the surge of support
request and bad publicity a new version of VLC gets if it breaks that
compatibility.

Fermulator, I think on a high level, everybody would agree. But I think
the problem is that nobody is responsible for fixing this issue.
GNOME guys decided to clean up their API. We can't blame them for doing
so. Of course, users of their APIs (i.e. VLC media player here) were
not notified. But
If it's just a matter of fixing a DBus in VLC, then Ubuntu VLC could
just invoke dbus-send via system(). Obviously, that wouldn't work for
other packages.
And by the way, xdg-screensaver will need to be fixed too, because VLC
1.1 will probably use that.
But again, I would not to blame GNOME too
That bug went from New to Fix-Released. What was the fix and where
has it been connected?
